My brother in law, who is Armenian from Lebanon, says Oum Kulthum was the equivalent of Judy Garland in Egypt, someone universally loved for both her musical talent and her love for her country. Her politics, as far as I know, were limited to being very pro Nasser, but no animosity towards Christianity or the West. I just love the depth of her voice.
