It's imposible to don't fall in love with Topol's characters. First it was Fiddler on The Roof, where I learn all the songs by heart and even dress up like him. And after seeing Sallah Shabati, I always whistles and sing to this song, and I don't even speak hebrew. There's only one Topol.

@betowm They are Arab-Jews. Arab is a nationality, Jew is a religion. If you are an Arab (one who lives in the Middle Eastern region), regardless of religion, and you want to say God in Arabic, then you say Allah. Allah is God in Arabic. This man, however, is not an Arab since he came from Morocco. Although, in Morocco they speak in Arabic, so Sallah, born and raised to speak both Arabic and Hebrew, refers to God as Allah when speaking casually.

I think it's just a nonsense word thrown in for rhythm.

I thought it was interesting that the song was in Hebrew but they referred to G-d as Allah. It must be a community of Mizrahi Jews that spoke Judeo-Arabic at one time. (Maimonides also refers to G-d as Allah in the manuscripts he wrote in Judeo-Arabic).

My favorite scene is in the kibbutz when they are voting to assist the marrav. When they voe they show the guy who is in the kitchen and "by a show of hands" the guy who is walking back and fourth between the kitchen just rasies his hand without hearing the question or issue they are voting for.
