  • sublime!

  • ...and to think, he was only 26 years old when he performed this song. He is an old soul. I must be too...

  • God how i love his world weary voice, spent on incandescent lyrics and creating an unforgettable inimtable soundtrack to the years of our lives

for all the gypsy angels, the hotrod angels, but not for the desolation angels, because this music is sublime

  • God how i love his world weary voice, spent on incandescent lyrics and creating an unforgettable inimtable soundtrack to the years of our lives

  • omg he was so young! love him!

  • @TMJKris I listened to that Agora broadcast in Chicago (WXRT no doubt), then saw the Uptown Theater show in Chi. soon after. I've seen some amazing concerts in my life, including Bruce 7 times ( wish it was 70 or maybe 700 times) but never, NEVER have seen a greater show than that one. Played at least four hours including all the encores and when it was finally over, and they were clearing the stage, the entire crowd ( the Uptown held 3 or 4 thousand I think ) was still hollering for more

  • What a way to start the 4th :)

  • But he aint my boss no more!

Happy 4th of July to all.

  • The love of my life...Bruce I love you!

    Daniela da Salerno

  • probably the best performance of this song

  • @Wamz1978 & godhelpme2009 ......guitar playing has many elements to it, technical elements are undoubtedly and part of it, but one part that seems to be thrown to the wind these days is Emotion. im sure mettalica fans will hunt me down but i belive a good example of a guitarist with skill but no soul is kirk hammet, he is far too mechanic.

  • yes,he his.

  • this just never gets old does it???

  • so beautiful, brings tears to my eyes

  • RIP Danny. E Street forever.

  • If I only had a time machine.

  • 31 years ago we called our baby girl SANDY, .. .......We lived in Beilen .. THE NETHERLANDS..

  • He is so attrative

  • Because of this song, I had to go to Asbury Park and just see what it was like. I love this song and I have to go back for 4th of July.

  • Heck yeah. I had to go there too on the 4th when I was round 20. My friend and I drove around the town blasting this song and smoking a joint the size of my middle finger. We got too high and didn't have cash for munchies though so we had to go home and missed the fireworks. Oh well. Asbury Park is ghetto, but it's sweet, and Madam Marie's shocked me at first because I didn't think it was a real place.

  • Springsteen's vivid almost cinematic take on boardwalk days gone by, accompanied by the melancholy and carnivalistic accordion.

  • Born and Raised in Long Branch, NJ...saw bruce countless times...Just saw him in Nashville, TN and I bought a girl who never saw him before..she loved it!!! Bruce is NJ

  • brings back memories when i was down there

  • Sissy-this song brings back soooo many great memories-I cna't believe you are gone-be at peace and in no more pain my sweet angel sister-I will forever remember and love You-your only sibling and sister-Butch

  • RIP Danny Federici on accordion, died April 2008.

  • now this song does not need an electric, sounds just as good acoustic, as long you have the accordian playing.

  • Sorry my mistake, I read that The Hollies covered the song in 1975 thinking that they wrote it, apologies to you all.

  • The elegiac strains of Sandy evoke the yearning for bittersweet days of youth against the backdrop of penny arcades and carnival rides at the Jersey shore.

  • He did'nt write this one though

  • yes he did...

  • Beautifully picturesque!

  • Oh, love me tonight, and I promise I'll love you forever.

Oh, I mean it my girl

My my my my my my baby

    Yeah, I promise my girl.

    ALWAYS.

  • 70's Bruce is damn near untouchable in terms of songwriting.

  • Would that make him touchable? ;-)

Know exactly what you mean though!

  • Fuck all the talk of Hall of Fame, and virtuosos. How many of them can make you feel like your friend is sitting next to you talking about the good times? Make you feel real?

  • Hmmm? I was going to say I'm impressed, but please lets leave the "Hall of Fame" out of it...

  • Knocking other players does you no credit. Wonder what Page and Beck think of Clapton? Let alone, say, what master session players Mitch Dalton or Hugh Burns would add. Bet they respect what he's done down the years. He's the only artist who's been inducted into the Hall of Fame three times (with Yardbirds, Cream, and in his own right). You can't fool all of the people...

  • This song (this performance and the song in general) is pure art. The fact that this kid from the Jersey Shore could see himself and his surroundings with this artistic insight is simply amazing. Bruce Springsteen is one of the great stories of Rock and Roll.

  • He, Steven and Nils share lead on songs. Bruce may not be Clapton, but he plays a mean and brilliant lead guitar. Just as good as Nils, Steven and everyone else out there except for Clapton, Beck and a few others.

  • You obviously don't play the guitar. First off, Nils Lofgren is light years better than anybody else you mentioned with the exception of Jeff Beck who is terrific. Clapton is the most overrated cocksucker in history. I havent seen any evidence that Little Steven is any better than Springsteen. Finally, there are literally hundred of amazing jazz guitarists and session men you have never heard of who would wipe the floor with all of those guys

  • I agree with everything apart from Clapton being overrated..

  • just the fact that somebody agreed is a noteworthy moent around here. LOL. We will have to agree to disagree on Clapton. Cheers, man!

  • To say that any guitar player or musician for that matter is "better" than another is generally based on closed-minded opinions...everybody's style is unique, which generates their appeal. Guys like Springsteen, Richards, Page, have all been judged and criticized on their technical abilities and yet they're the ones selling platinum records and touring the world, rather than being confined to session work (excluding pre-Zep Page). Perhaps you don't play guitar?

  • Playing the guiitar is no different than pitching... it is a measurable technichal skill with elements of art. You could say "I like the way Dave Righetti throws a baseball" until the cows came home and Mariano Rivera would still be better. Finally, the selling records argument is the dumbest and most overrused argument in these discussions. Using that logic, Britney Spears is a better singer than Sarah Vaughn because she sold 50000 times as many records. I've been playing 21 years

  • Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Selling records is just one of many, many criteria. My only point is that Bruce plays the guitar well. He writes songs above well, and overall this band is as good as any that have come along. His work will be immortal, just like Sarah Vaughn, Sinatra, Elvis, etc. And your analogy to pitchers is very good and I agree. And, I love the Yankees, so any mention of Rivera (and Righetti) is a good thing.

  • There are guys on you tube, sitting in their bedrooms who can play "Giant Steps" backwards and forwards, Bruce couldnt play that song if you held an AK-47 to his face. Neither could Clapton. Thats my point. Selling records has zero to do with it to me. Van Gogh never sold a painting. Bach was just a respected church organist. I am glad you like the Yanks like I do, I was worried that analogy might go sour if I used it on a Sox fan, LOL

  • Van Gogh sold one painting--- to his brother-in-law, and it was really cheap. Kind of a charity case. But it wasn't a real "sale" since it was his brother-in-law. I know exactly what you are getting at.

  • Thanks, bro

  • @Wamz1978 Bruce plays the song as it's supposed to be played because he wrote it that way. That's the difference between singer/songwriters, and great studio guys. They might have technical talent, but they can't write songs. It makes them less of an artist.

PS::The Yankees are kicking some Red Sox Butt tonight.

  • @Wamz1978 , you sound like an idiot-"Playing the guiitar is no different than pitching... it is a measurable technichal skill with elements of art." An educated idiot, a closed minded, full of him/herself intellectual. I know my calling you an idiot makes me sound stupid & dismissible AND I am sure you can sound quite intelligent while making your point BUT none of that changes how idiotic your comment about measuring guitar playing.

  • @Wamz1978 ...and then you're a hypocrite rejecting the value of popular appeal as a measure(which i agree with on most counts) , but then put forth the measure of "who can play 'Giant Steps' backwards & forwards". There are PLENTY of technically accomplished players who not capable of "speaking" to people with the 'music' they make. How often have U read the best players say 1 person can play 1000 notes well & not be half the musician as the person who plays a few notes, but they are perfect

  • @Wamz1978,(cont.) also heard over & over by the best players is that it's not about playing lots of notes as much as knowing what & when NOT to play.I totally agree that Nils is EXTRAORDINARY. But you totally underestimate Bruce as a musician & the range of music he can play very well, but he did choose to emphasize songwriting in a popular genre above pursuing & displaying instrumental virtuosity. He can go "all over (most of) the map" as a player & do it well. Or at least he used to be able to

  • @godhelpme2009 ~p.s. Springsteen & Coltrane share a birthday. I know this becasue they are 2 of my all time favorite musicians. They have both changed my life with their music.

  • Sure, but how many of them have sold about 120 million records? The band is a unit. You could add 7 virtuosos, but it doesn't mean they would make a good band.

I just meant that Bruce is unusual in that he gets his share of playing the lead. I just don't see that many bands that have 3 decent lead guitarists.

And, my guitar playing truly sucks.

  • He gets the lead because they are his songs, its his band and I bet what he hears is what he wants on there, regardless of wether or not Nils is much more accomplished as a player. Even Charlie Parker had to back people up from time to time. I doubt you truly suck. Theres a guy on here who "plays" the solo to Backstreets, which is pretty straightforward, and what he plays sounds nothing like it in any way, shape or form. If you've played 5 minutes, your better than him, my friend

  • I think we agree.

  • Hahaha... Backstreets is a really fun and simple enough song to play on piano. I've checked Roy's hands on the videos and from what I can tell I voice the chords pretty similarly, which is cool... My left hand is essentially worthless compared to his though. But he's amazing, 2nd only to Billy Joel as far as rock pianists go.

  • I'm pretty sure he's playing it the entire song. Go listen to Seeger and the Silver Bullet Shits.

  • ohh bitch bob seager is fuckin awsome he songs have true meaning man dont ever put down good music ok damn u r a retard

  • Another song of my favorites by Bruce !!!!

  • la più bella

  • Oh Sissy-I can't believe you are gone-be at peace and in no more pain-we listened to this song so much years ago-we were the sisters back then-remember-your one and only sibling and sister-butch

  • Hey Bruce, The Album is The Wild The Innocent And The E Street Shuffle Baci

  • best version of this song that I have ever heard. Thank God for Youtube!

  • Minha prima se chama sandy e tenho uma amiga que se chama sande, amo todas as duas...heheheh

    Linda musica

  • i love when he goes, "well he's not my boss anymore, sandy!" this album might be better than born to run

  • Agree. It's my all-time favorite.

  • GREETINGS and WILD INNOCENT served as perfect precursors to what is, speaking thematicly (sp?), the greatest studio album in the history of rock n' roll. . .

  • sarò sempre sandy

  • si è la più bella

  • he wasnt saying its from the greetings album he meant that its about asbury park like the songs title says

  • My buddy and I saw the last show Danny played in Indianapolis. It was really, really special when they played Sandy together. We were the only ones standing basically in the whole section cause noone really knew what the song was! And we had to be the youngest people there too.

  • Sandy isnt from Greetings From Asbury Park, what was he thinking!

  • lol im sure that nobody at the concert at the time noticed because this was before he really took off and got popular, maybe he messed up or he was just referencing that the song has "Asbury Park" in the title lol

  • Love how he's just swaying back and forth at the start of the song. Totally immersed in the music. Bringing a taste of the Jersey Shore to London must have meant so much to him. It certainly did to me!

  • Great post. I noticed it too. He' s enjoying the music as much as the audience.

He is our (Jersey's) best ambassador.

  • I fully agree...he is his music...in those days...

  • bruce is da whole package.

  • sto ascoltando sandy la più bella.

  • e bella condivido,ma non e la migliore del boss!!!!!!

  • è quella che mi emoziona di più

  • I have been playing this song while watching the fireworks since 1976. The first time we parked at a beach out in Shirley, LI and watched some dinky little fireworks but somehow that still is the best 4th of July memory I have. Tonight I'll listen once again and thank God for Bruce and our freedom.

  • Comment removed

  • Happy 4th of July!

  • how can i express my emotion...so a beautiful version, Bruce..

  • He said at the beginning "This is something from Asbury Park". It's on the Wild, The Innocent, though. Isn't it?

    What did i miss here?

  • He probably just means the song comes from Asbury Park itself, rather than the album.

  • Yeah, you're right. Leave it to me to look to far into it. :P

  • i'm french and bruce is my boss too;he will be with us this summer at the old charrues's concert.our land is his land because of all he has given to us.the boss will be always magic . he's more than the greatest songwritter for me,an example of who a human being can be to make our world better.

  • Gorgeous song. The Hollies recorded it before Bruce was a big star and their version is intoxicating also.

  • bruce,I love you!!!!!!!!

  • non ti dimenticherò mai

  • i saw him last nite in Gboro, NC. damn he's 60 and still ROCKS THE HOUSE! hell yeah you go BRUUUUUUCE!

  • sandy is the sound-track of my life

  • It was one year ago we lost that great musician. 7 days before my birthday. God that sucks, I heard about it, went outside, told my dad, and he was as shocked as I was. this was only a few days after we had gone to see the Magic Tour at the Palace in Detroit.

  • I was at that show at the Palace. I'm glad I got to see Danny before he died. Such an amazing band, and it will never be the same.

  • This is an awesome song from one of Bruce's best albums

  • This song reminds me off all that beautiful summer holidays. Bruce is the Boss

  • The boss

  • We Joisey people knew what he meant

  • this swede knows as well :P

  • sandy is from the wild the innocent n the e street shuffle is it not?? dus he say its from asbury park

  • I wonder if he meant the place, not the album.Who knows?

  • He just meant ithink its a kind of an Asbury Park story.

  • great song !! great album, maybe the best

  • we have a swedish version from 1985 with Ulf Lundell "sanna" its the name

  • what's the song where danny goes crazy with the accordion?

  • "Bishop Danced"?

He goes crazy on organ on "Thundercrack" and "Kitty's Back" too. Between him and Rick Wright we lost some serious keyboard talent recently... I hope Billy Joel isn't next. Or Roy Bittan for that matter!

'Sandy' saved my life... The lyrics speak of what I've always wanted... Snack Pharm. RIP to my mother (2/11/09) who also saved my life...

  • it's sad losing rick wright.

  • the kitty's back organ solo was dave sancious

  • Bishop Danced

  • ah man.. growin up where he grew up and listening to this song brings back so many memories... dressing like a dirtbag all the time, one dollar slices on the boardwalk.. the smell of those shops... the sounds.. waves, seagulls, crazy kids running around the boardwalk...wow

  • ok?

  • There's always something special in the Boss' songs. Maybe it's the way he sings, the words, the music all of these. It's the way he talks about every moments in life. MAgic moments. Thanks Bruce and Glamer

  • The BOSS at his BEST!!! So open & free..... This was, in fact Bruce Springsteen!! This can't compare..... with 'Radio Nowhere."

  • I totally agree with you

While I can relate to why he wrote Radio Nowhere and think it's a good rock tune - this right here is the REAL deal

  • "love me tonight, for I may never see you again"

  • Makes my breathing short as I remember hearing this part of my youth...so many years ago.

  • Yes you are the Boss. Great show at Harley Fest Baci Sandy

  • Run Madame Mary, run! Don`t let `em bust you! You tell fortunes a Million times better than them cops !!!!! :)))

  • this song is so real and so sad and so powerful ...its a killer.

  • Why is this song so uplifting and pure? Is it the mark of a true bard/poet to lift the flirtations of amusement park hangers-on to an evocation of the divine?

  • beautifully put

  • Few song writers in our time are able to invoke such words to be said by about their music.

    Well said, sturthehistoryguy, well said.

  • Absolutely love this tune...Im a Sandy, and LOVE THE BOSS! Great performance Bruce, hits home here..bigtime!

    XOXOXO

  • i wish bruce still had this voice...

    best ever!!!!

  • Magic song!

  • One of his best songs. Simply wonderful.

  • This song is danny's baby...he made sure it grew up well

  • Hey Glammer...

Thanks for all your wonderful Springsteen videos. Yours are by far the very best!

    The MadSwami

  • This song so many memories... Sandy was a girl i went with at this time.. died in a car crash, the car rolled into the Avon River Christchurch New zealand around 1975 - 76 Great song ..great girl

  • Danny was one of the original members, even before they were the "E Street Band". He was the greatest, I miss him =(

  • nice version... but the best performance of this song is on the live 75-85 box set... he really belts out the vocals and the song sounds so much better

  • Yeah, that's my favorite version too.

  • often times I sing this song while in my car, I love Sandy.

    RIP Danny,

    RIP Madam Marie

    RIP Tim Russel,

its been a sad year on E Steet.

  • Good job you never carried on fixing those tv's eh danny, rest in peace, your memory will live on forever :)

  • One of my favorite bruce songs ever. And this performance is amazing.

    RIP Danny, RIP Marie.

Thank you for the music bruce.

  • RIP Phantom & Madam Marie.

  • RIP Madam Marie

  • Mote then Fantastic..

    Thanks Bruce

    (Rip Danny)

  • RIP danny, this is a great song.

  • Beautiful song!

    RIP Phantom

    Thank you for the magic.

  • Beautiful and touching rendition of this song!!!

  • I was lucky enough to see this tour just after this on Dec. 21 1975 in Toronto. Danny and Roy were prominent in the mix unlike today's guitar based wall of sound bombast. I know that youtube is to my mind fundamentally unfair to copyright holders, but just to be able to travel back in time at will like this is incredible. This song and the others from this time are so moody and different! And Danny was such a big part of it. Wonderful.

  • Danny Federici, you were part of magic. You WERE magic. Rest in peace and may you always be remembered.

  • This is so beautiful.

The melody, the text, the voice, the music.

    Thank you.

    Rest in peace Danny.

  • Every dream comes to an end... Things will never be the same. But we won't forget those wonderful times.

    Goodbye, Danny. Thanks for everything.

  • danny, this song will be yours now.

we will all miss you sadly now you are gone.

things will not be the same without you.

goodbye and thankyou for over 20 years of enjoyment.

  • did he write this song

  • who.. bruce?.. of course he wrote it. On his second album

  • so talented, you'll be forever missed, RIP Danny.

  • all hail dan R.I.P.

  • Rest In Peace Phantom...May you have a clear block always, and may you eternally find Paradise by the "C"

  • my god danny, the e street band will never be the same without you, you are the best

  • Love you Danny,,you're the GREATEST!!!!!!

  • Danny, You were the best.

Thanks for all the wonderful music...you made the world a happier place

  • Thanks Danny... you were the greatest, man. RIP

  • RIP Freddie

  • RIP Phantom.

  • Danny boy, Thanks for the sweet sweet music. I'm glad I saw you play. The shows won't be the same without you.

    Godspeed

  • RIP Danny Federici :(

  • Sandy, from Record World, where r u?

  • Haha. Someone plays wrong (around 2:40) and Federici gives him a strange face. Gush I love this video.

  • Looking for 'Pretty Flamingo'....anybody got it? Off of bootleg 'You Can Trust Your Car To the Man Who Wears the Star' circa 1973 (?)...been listening for 35 yrs.Still feels like yesterday.

  • I love the variations he does to his songs live.... when he says things like "Well he ain't my boss no more SandY!" that just charges my veins

  • this song make me romantic...I like it

That's why he is The BOSS!!!!
