can you use any blank HDD for a mac? Because if that's the case (no pun intended) why don't you just get a $20 external HDD kit and buy the drive yourself?
It may not be made by Mac and it won't have that Mac design or Mac certification, but it also won't have those Mac problems.

I thought the d2 was a pile of poo, until a friend brought me a F.A. Porsche designed LaCie drive. The thing was positively roasting, I cut a few large holes in the case and that solved the problem.

its a Griffin Powermate. I use it for plenty of things, it lists for $50 I think.
