  • The US has to be racist, they can't consciously acknowledge that the people they kidnapped and enslaved are the equals of the whites, otherwise what does that make them ?

    Monsters ?

  • This is a horribly racist film, but it was a landmark in filmaking. It is a fascinating film if you have the stomach to sit through it.

  • "Toga" ..."Toga" ..."Toga!"

  • Wow this was million dollar, cutting edge technology in 1915...

  • This is the ultimate racist movie. It promotes the "lost cause" theory that the southerners used as a balm for losing the Civil War, and was based on a book called, "The Klan". I don't think it gets much more racist than that.

  • so when all the blacks and jews die jesus comes back and brings peace to the untainted pure white americans?

    <3 perfect.

"Liberty and union, one and inseperable, now and forever"

  • @DiebytheSword327 And what's more ironic is that Jesus was a Jew.

  • wait, what is this ending of? all I see is a giant orgy

  • oh you poor ignorant racist people....

  • E PLURIBUS UNUM. Fuck the Klan(terrorists), confederates(Traitors should Be Hung), and all who conspire against our great nation. You Bastards can eat a dick.

  • TO ALL THE RACIST I HOPE U ALL GO TO HELL AND BURN SO PEASE OFF URSELVES. INSTEAD OF HATING ON OTHER TAKE UR HILLBILLY ASSES BACK TO SCHOOL AND GET A FUCKING EDUCATION SO U CAN STOP BLAMING EVERYONE ELSE FOR Y UR A BUMB

  • @chrischeer1

Do you know what irony is? Probably not.

A good example of irony is someone who can't spell, and seems a bit thick preaching to everyone to get an education.

    Bumb? you mean bum.

I do agree in what you are saying though... to a degree.

  • you people are idiots. obviously you have no knowledge of what was going on around that time. go back to school.

  • I've watch this film right now and I don't understand what the hell where doing that huge horse and Jesus in the end o.O" maybe the horse respresents the dessperation of the people in that scene and Jesus the peace and glory of the people in his scene?

  • Thousands of people denounced the film Birth of a Nation when that racist shit came out. Both Blacks and Whites denounced it. Griffith was a vile racist. Let's not excuse racism because a lot of idiots were that way--always remember that there were thousands of whites that opposed white supremacy, John Brown, John Adams, Col. Robert Shaw, Benjamin Lundy, the Quakers, and more. Stupid is always stupid no matter if it was during the time of Sparatus or when that ass hole Griffith did his dirt.

  • Jesus and Pure Whites in heaven, no jEws to cause us to kill each other.

Beautiful movie as a whole, unspeakably Beautiful.

  • Enough of the ignorant racist bullshit...noone is better than another based on skin color...many proud southern blacks fought in defense of their homeland...quit letting the powers that be drive racial wedges between us in order to keep us week and in check...wake up people !!!

  • 0:12 are those bodies on the right?

  • Black people are just mad because we are better than them and Jesus loves us.

  • @adrenas you are really stupid. Jesus loves everyone. And you are not better you racist fool.

  • @trews78 See, this is why Jesus loves us and not you. You are too stupid to even realize that we are better than you.

  • @adrenas You are the stupid one read the bible. God loves everyone it does not matter the color of someones skin. And you are not better than me.

  • @adrenas - Thank you for speaking up! GOD BLESS YOU! And God Bless Our White Race.

  • ; All the 'Negros' in this, as with most early motion-pictures, were white people in black-face. Take a new look at the early motion-pictures featuring 'Negros', notice that they're usually in musical numbers only, to enable cutting them out of the motion-picture, before viewing by white audiences, usually audiences with white women.

    Cheers!

    Cheers!

  • Unless you are in the KKK or 100 years old how could you say this movie isn't racist. I mean the legislature scene is just pure racism. I do however understand that 100 years ago, racism was a standard belief, but still it's a racist movie

  • Like my history instructor used to say -- Remember, "Birth of the Nation" is an ANTI-war movie!

  • Comment removed

  • I love Birth of a Nation; It's like looking into a time warp of how Los Angeles looked before it got developed all to Hell.

The end scene were the two love birds sitting on the coast looks like Santa Monica.

  • I don't support racism AT ALL but people the movie was made 95 years ago! Back then it wasn't such a big deal. That's not to say that African Americans weren't offended, as there were riots and petitions for awhile. I try to admire the film itself for the stunning work it did for movies and not for the racial messages. I'm not saying it's message of racism was right, but what's important is how we feel now. It's like going to the Davinci Code. You know exactly what it trys to convey.

  • yes, it is racist it made the blacks the only heros.....

  • Its funny how people forgave DW and his racist movie, because of its tecnique and crucified leni...

  • @vivianerp Well it was 1916. Even though the ending was blasphemous most people were racist. Also DW made Intolerance. A better movie and one of the best Silent films ever.

  • I don't think anyone says this movie isn't racist. But it's still a good movie despite the message of evil. How many other good movies glorify murder, robbery, greed, etc.? There's lots of them.

  • you almost have to laugh...

  • That is blasphamous. Utterly shameful andthis was allowed back in 1916.

  • @mainestategop

    lighten up Francis

  • Racist? Noooo not at all. <= sarcasm

  • Despite the ending, how can this movie not be racist period? The entire firlm was about Confederates saving the United States.

  • Jesus was the super-jew, so racists really can't parade him around.

  • Does anyone honestly say that Birth of a Nation is not a racist film?

  • @truetheatertype It was a historical film, not a film to target specific groups of people.

  • @MegGriffin45 yeah, right....

  • LOL Jesus? Really, Griffith? Really?

  • forget about negros, how about all these millions of mexicans here?

  • Do the acolytes of the tyrannical religion of equality just troll around the net throwing filth on the values of the past? And you self-righteous fools enable a popular culture that propagates more gold-toothed, butt-chasing, drug-selling stereotypes. Ha! And you think it's progress when they leer at your wives and girlfriends. They deserve to because you have given them much power over you.

  • dear lord. listen to that "happy" classical music Griffith makes a mockery of. Classical music or whatever that is wasn't meant to be racist. And I can't believe they dared put what I think is Jesus in there....

  • everyone in 3rd grade should watch this in there history class especially the blacks cause then they would understand why white people gotta problem with there race, those poor white souls never had a chance before Klu Klux came to save there virtue !!! HORSESHIT !!!!!!

and for you slow people who don't know bout condescension !!! try pick up a book !!! "YOUTUBE" !!!!!! yes I'm talking to YOU !!!!

  • save the planet and kill yourself

  • It's "''sarcasm'''< sometimes words on a screen don't come across the same as when you can see someones facial expressions, either way does that mean, you have the right to be mean, did you ever think it's those types of remarks that keep all this hate going, I will re-write my comment so that you don't get your feelings hurt god knows I wouldn't want that on my hands be safe in your travels,,, B.T.W. who sends comments to people remarking on a 3 month old post ! all hate is fear based !!

  • well whatever..you're boring me now

  • Is Jesus holding a sword?! He himself said that "them who take the sword shall perish by the sword"... and he was right!!

  • All in ya Jaw like a dick in ya momma

  • I like how you articulate those opinions in a way that would make anti-racist people like myself seem like grammarfail douchebags.

  • I can honestly say I have never considered genocide as a means of dealing with people who I am not comfortable around

  • so your plan is to construct massive death camps which would kill billions of people worldwide for the sole reason that they don't look like you?

  • no they aren't. as of the July 1, 2008 census, whites are the majority by about a third

  • Wow, what an honor!

  • i am well aware of that

  • what pisses me off is your absolutely right. We are...

  • ....really...."Some people say that Birth isn't a racist movie at all." I doubt it.

  • Buttfuck retarded theory.

  • Can't see any dead black soldiers but regardless, yeah a racist film. Still I think its damn difficult to look at historical racism accurately. For one people often can't get that it was a casual thing and not uniform either. White/Aryan supremacy which dominates modern racism is a pretty modern accurance, at least in its genocidal form. Meanwhile many were 'scientific' racists, saw race as Darwinist classes and tried to educate and civilise lesser peoples, enlightened for the time

  • acutally japeuk, the modern occurance of racism seen most today in america is violent racism towards whites by blacks. blacks are allowed to be openly and freely as hateful to white people as they choose , with no consequence . it is whites who must watch what we do and say , because nobody is allowed to offend minorities.

  • Wow this movie has hippies, Jesus, giants on horses with swords; 1915 must've been a great time.

  • @Ditch2012 Accept WWI or then known as International Civil War II

  • @Ditch2012 You're fucking ignorant

  • @Ditch2012 You're fucking ignorant

  • @Ditch2012 You're ignorant

  • @Ditch2012 You're comment is completely stupid.

  • my thoughts after seeing it: the aproximate first half of the movie (about the Civil War) was brilliantly done for its time, the second half was blatant propaganda for the KKK... painful to watch

  • That movie seems hella boring.

  • so even christianity suffered racism, its sad

  • "Birth of A Nation" was made in 1915, 50 years after the end of the Civil War. 50 years ago in 1959 before the Civil Rights Act, before blacks were allowed to vote in some States, before Martin Luther King's Speech and 2 years before Barak Obama's birth. Start reading your history books "...cause the times they are a changing"...Dylan

  • Obviously, Griffith had his own opinions that subsequently made it into the movie, but that was his choice. Does that mean movies like the Jazz Singer were racist too?

  • Okay this is strange. I cant see any dead black people and the Image of Jesus is just weird. And like what was asked before. What is it with the guy on the horse with the sword.

  • it's interesting that although its disgusting message of prejudice, hate and hipocrisy, it is a very well made film.. just like the triumph of the will and mel gibson's passion of christ

  • What exactly is going on in that scene with the guy on the horse? I can barely make out the people.

  • this is a "honky heaven", just white , white , white ,and self important shite!

  • KKK SUCKS DICKS

  • ifi ever make a birth of a nation movie, i would never inclued the blessings on white people and include an ending, where there is a still hope for black people, and a speech by myself, saying that we are sorry if we have offended anyone, oh and makesure the kkk is not treated as heros

  • wow..how sad..and embarrasing

  • there were no black people in the film.

    now thats racist

  • It wasn't just this film. NO FILM/PLAY back in the 1800s-early 1900's contained black people.

  • la mas grande de las estupideces que pudo haber hecho el cine. NO RACISMO.

  • Not raciest....

  • maybe this film isn't rascist.maybe dw just made this movie in the views and hopes of the south.did anybody call bruce dickinson a rascist after run to the hills?

  • At 0:45 the man in white top hat (on the left, descending the stairs) is black (looks like it). There is no racism in Heaven. )

  • who the hell said this film wasn't racist - the ku klux klan are the heroes.

  • KKK SUCKS DICKS

  • true that man i saw this movie & im only 14 kkk sucks

  • kkk sucks dicks

  • Comment by Houghsvideo: "... But check out the subtle references from the ending. Notice that the "Black" union soldiers are all dead? See how only the White people are blessed by Jesus?"

I can guarantee you IF Griffith deliberately had the black soldiers die it was to emphasize their martydom, not so that white people would be alone with Jesus. Griffith saw black people as loveable children. Offensive? Hell, yes, but that's not the racism that spends time inserting "subtle references."

  • well , again WHY black people appear in this movie? if they know the movie will be racist

  • they were basically slaves then, tey were forced to. they had no choice

  • Not quite.

  • they technically werent slaves but they didnt have alot of choice. if it paid, they had to do it to survive. fact

  • Then most white people have the same problem. By your definition most people are slaves. The problem with your definition is that is actually correct. I work a shitty job to get paid to pay my way through university.

Guess I'm a slave to a materialistic world.

Ultimately, I'd prefer to be a slave than a Cynic (in the philosophical - ascetic sense).

  • That's really ignorant stuff you're putting out.

  • what do you mean ignorant

  • You'd have to be very ignorant of black history if you think black people in the era in which this movie was made were basically slaves who were forced to perform in movies.

  • What? Anyway, there was only only black person in this film. The black rights organizations of the times organized protests against the film. There were some riots over it.

  • Because at the time, it was the only way for black comedians to be in the movie industry.

  • no black people appeared in this movie. they were white people painting their face as black.

  • I believe there was one black woman. She was a friend of Griffith. But you're right in the main, the "Negro" actors are wearing makeup.

  • @nader85021 theres plenty of black people in the movie, , but none of them had a big role. In 1915 they felt a black man couldnt portray a black man in a hollywood film, so they had charachters like gus as a white dude in blackface

  • @DiebytheSword327 Not every black character was a white in blackface.

  • They are white people wearing makeup, in some scenes its very apparent. There was only one person in there that appeared to be black but rumor has it she was italian with a good tan? Not sure, but most are white guys in makeup

  • @nayusin There are no black ppl in this movie, dumb ass!!......it's white ppl with pain on thier faces!!!

  • "The movie stinks the people of that time were racist and the people of our time (white people)are racist. masking it in other forms or turning it around by calling black people afro racist that to me is sick like the people that use that term."

You're acting like only white people can be racist.

  • Pardon me, but calling someone a racist because they are white.....what does that make you?

  • When did I ever say that?

  • "the people of our time (white people)are racist"...fuck you. I'm white and I'm not racist and guess what asshole, I got A LOT of friends who are also white who are not racist. Pieces of shit like you are the reason why MLK Jr's "I Have a Dream" speech is not true....piece of shit racist white people and piece of shit racist black people from both sides are keeping that dream from coming true. Grow up & don't see yourself as black or white....see yourself as an individual. Sick fuck.

  • Please read my post again. I was QUOTING another person.

  • @UofLCardFan08 Excuse me, but I'm black n I don't think all white ppl are racist...that's just ignorant!

  • @missjay2u1

I never said you did. I was talking about another post on here in which they implied that they believed only whites are racist. Obviously, not everyone thinks that way, and vise versa.

  • to anyone who wants to see this movie, don't. its the longest piece of crap I have ever watched. the same song plays over and over and over and over again. I was forced to watch it in history class.

  • Birth of a Nation is a SILENT film. Don't blame the film for some no talent hack who couldn't put proper music (the score Griffin himself suggested but required a full orchestra to do) to it.

  • You're quite right, Maxi. Griffith had a score for full orchestra written to be performed for this film.

  • I can't understand why people keep using the catch phrase "politically correct", when they talk about hateful things in our society. Crime is Crime and Hate is Hate. I own this movie on VHS, I am black, and it is racist. I might have another perspective due to my experience. My friend might have George Washington as a hero, and say he lead a honorable life, (the I can't tell a lie cherry tree thing), but I know he held slaves in not so proper conditions, what should be my perspective? Think!

  • Well, first off the whole cherry tree story is a fictional one. Regardless you cannot judge people of the past with the new prejudices and perspectives of today. Washington for his time was extremely progressive in his views towards slavery, guarantying his slaves their freedom after his and his wife's death. I agree with you, slavery undermines the whole idea behind our constitution and the appeals it makes for it's justification are fictitious and illogical.

  • Reading these posts tells me most of the cattle are now since " Pearl Harbor Mother Of All Conspiracies" are marxist brainwashed kool aid drinkers.

Type that one in to a search engine cattle. Moooo.

  • I think we are all brainwashed - on the left they repeat what commentators of the side say without thinking - likewise on the right they do the same thing - no one understands what the truth is anymore - there is nothing but looking at a viewpoint based on your "position" - if the truth wavers from your postition you don't go with the truth you stick by your position - I don't label people I discuss with them and find where they are at - Marxist - Right Wing what do they mean?

  • Look up albert Pike

and I show you why the so called cattle does not agree with your asthetic

And As a Veteran of a Foreign Conflict myself

this is all about freedom right so let the people speak, there views and opinions in this day and age its really all we have

  • I couldn't tell what race the dead soldiers belonged to. :/

  • Yes.

If we were really serious about race relations in this country, we would think about how race affected us culturally, as well as every way else.

This movie was made at a very racist time in our history, yet the book it was based on was a best seller, as well as a hit play!

  • Even thought the movie is apparently pretty racist, it's still an invaluable piece of cinema, and I'd like to see the whole thing one day. :3

  • i dont care that this film maybe racist and wrong by todays standards or back then it is one of the best films ever made like it or not. thanks to everyone trying to be political correct most kids dont even know who D.W. Griffith is. i support civil rights but not as much as i support freedom of speach.

  • your mother was a horse..

  • so you must be the offspring of 50,000 whores and 50,000 dogs.

  • No, but your mother was an ass.

That's what makes the Air-brained Air-ry-ons os great right?

or is it good old fashioned dixie incest?

  • Your funny! Hahaha.........I agree D.W. had to be just that. : ) God bless you for having far more sense than these fools

  • I was genuinely moved when I first saw this ending. I had heard all these horrible things about "B o a N" but I think what DW really wanted was peace. Of course, the crowd who scream "diversity" are the last to practice it. I don't doubt that the Klan'll be dead and gone in a generation. Intimidation in any form is wrong, be it by guys in ghost costumes, shrieking, unshaven, braless harpies, or slick, fast talking hustlers w/ a tv station in one pocket and a mob of demonstrators in the other.
