I think you have your history wrong...

Most lynchings of blacks were in the South. The Confederacy and the Ku Klux Klan were in the South. The "solid" South always voted against Republicans because they freed the blacks in the Civil War. Blacks were not able to vote in the South but they were able to in the North. In the early to mid 1900s blacks were finally moving up North (which is strange as the Civil War ended in 1865).

The reason there were no "white only areas" in the South was because the blacks were enslaved; in the North they weren't exactly free but they weren't slaves either.

America in general has NEVER liked black people. But after the Civil War 79% of lynchings happened in the South.
