The air war in WW2 did seem to favour experienced fighter pilots: If you got to a good skill level you could shoot many times your number of opponents down (As the Poles did in the Battle of Britain) but if someone got ahead in experienced flyers you were really screwed.
The best pilots in the Battle of Britain were the American flyboys like Rafe McCawley and Billy Fiske. They were highly trained and were able to mentor the new boys, like the Canadians and Poles. American training was the best, going back to Orville Wright, the first true sky ace. God Bless the American Aviators, who Churchill called "The Few".
@cpj93070 The movie Pearl Harbor showed American pliots in the Battle of Britain. They were called by Churchill, as they were the most experienced and had the best training.
@EasyCompanyAirborne omg your out of your mind you know that only 7 american pilots fought in the battle of britain 1 killed and none of them shot any planes down, i have the utmost respect for them pilots in the battle, but your one fucked up twat if you think the most experienced pilots were americans, this was our victory do you hear me yank A BRITISH VICTORY, and you always coming into wars late again as always.
@cpj93070 Either "EasyCompanyAirborne" is trying to joke, or he even thinks that the "Doolittle Raiders" actually incorprated fighter pilots and that all the B-25's during that raid flew together...
@EasyCompanyAirborne Its a good thing that the Americans were too late for the Battle of Britain. It was tough enough fighting the Germans without having to deal with "friendly fire" from so-called allies.
The three "Hurricanes" in the background in the beginning of this video, are actually the same Spanish "Buchons" that play the parts of "Messerschmitt Me 109's" in the rest of the film, because only three flyable "Hurricanes" were found.
THE CO of the Poles had a point.People have died because comms got stuffed with too many people talking at once.Battle of Nasiriah 2004 a case in point.
Hurray for the Poles - I like this bit of film - they had lost everything and possibly people in Britain didn't and still don't understand and certainly never suffered what Poland did and here they are taking any chance to hit back. There were the South Africans (e.g. Sailor Malan), Zimbabweans like me, the Irish, coming in spite of 1916, Australians, Kiwis and others. They didn't come to join a bunch of whiners feeling sorry for themselves but the side with guts and honour.
@t43562 All the best from Poland, and I hope that the effort of the allies in the WWII - not only that of the Poles, but also the Czech and all those nations you've mentioned will be remembered.

You have be a total ingnoramus to write what you just did. I was raised in SW Saskatchewan in Canada. Less than 20 miles from our farm was an RAF base that was operated by Canadians. It was a Gunnery School, if you doubt my world, check out Gunnery School, RAF, Mossbank, Sk. Another school was operated near Congress, Sk. It was flight school. The pilots graduated as early as 1940 and went over to defend Britian.
PS: My uncle died in a Spitfire near a town named Tholthorpe, England. He had been enganged in a fight with a German bomber when a fuel line on his aircraft developped a fuel leak. The Spit exploded on landing. You should be ashamed making such accusations against Canada. My other uncle was a flight instructor at Brandon, Manitoba. Several American pilots came over and trained to defend England. They also flew Spits and Lancasters.

I'm sorry if I lost my cool when stokeliam09 made outrageous statements that we let Britain fall during WWII. I know we helped Holland, and we would do it again. At least I would.
Some of the people having a go at each other on this thread should have been fighting in that war. Why such hatred? Hey this was years ago. Things were different then. People flew by the 'seat of their pants' both literally and metaphorically.
I have created a music album which charts this same period of British history:
Britain At War - Darkest Hour by Rhesus Monkey. The album covers the Prelude to War, The King's Speech, The Battle of France, Dunkirk, The Battle of Britain, and of course The Blitz. I've also created a video to accompany Churchill's address to the United States in June 1941: 'The Old Lion'. You can view that video within my YouTube channel.
a book on the battle of britain by paval vancatta (a czech writer) shows that the raf lost 399 aircraft to 612 luftwaffe lost in august, and 303 squadron only had 1 kill and their first on august 30th, they had most of their kills in september yet the performance of the RAF in the battle of britain didn't improve that month and they lost 414 to luftwaffe loss of 554 aircraft.
I am curious if I can have an explaination for this? as mentioned at 3.32 the fighting should have got easier...
@joepesciscat Yeah. And in Polish 303rd squadron markings as well. But as far as I remember he was flying in 1941 so it was rather Battle over Channel than BoB (so Polish Spitfire seems right cause Poles were using Hurricanes in BoB having been given Spits beginning of 41). @TheGroundedAviator Thanks was not aware of that. So it makes it even more historically inconsistent as actually one of the few flying Hurries bears that squadron markings :P
As to that Spitfire I am pretty sure it has the marking of Polish ace Bolesław Gładych although it is mkIX not mV as it should be......
@baruteku They wern't even that good, cowboys! An Americain pilot from the BOB even transfered from them as they were an un-disaplined (as a combat unit, he didn't care about on the ground), glory-hungry mob too him.
Turn on "transcribe audio" for a hilarious example of auto-correct. I was gasping with laughter. Occasionally, it has an almost Shakespeare-like quality to it.
@joepesciscat Americans actually helped a lot. They had their own squadron. But they didn't fight during the Battle of Britain. Thank God for those brave pilots that helped save freedom.
This British-Polish argument over who sacrificed the most; lost the most; gave the most, or was the bravest is nonsense. The Nazi bastards wanted war. Read William Shirer's "Rise and Fall of the 3rd Reich," because he was a newsman who saw the Nazis rise, and later, he reviewed the captured German archives. At different times, Brits, Poles, and all the others fought desperately with Nazi knives at the throats of their families and kids. So, don't cheapen their heroism by bickering now.
@joepesciscat Of course, if you watch carefully, Ben Affleck'sSpitfire had a squadron code of RF - the code used for POLISH 303 Squadron in BoB. There's an irony for ya...
The Battle of Britain was the most important victory in the first three years of World War 2. I'm looking forward to the next Hollywood movie where it was Patton, not Dowding who completely overhauled the RAF and lead it to victory. God Bless the Poles and Czechs for helping out the Empire.
Why in the name of God are you arguing about who shot who??? Didn't the Poles and Czecks give their lives just like the British? I always thank God that they were there to help us!
@comankh True, in 1939 Poland didn't get any help. Then Poland helped in the battle of Britain, just to be sold to Communist Russia after the end of the war. The victory parade in London right after the war ended did not include Polish pilots. They couldn't understand why. Soon they found out. So Poland got backstabbed in 1939 and again in 1945.
@plsniper we also sold out Czechoslovakia in the same way - It was a great shame to my country - we failed to recognise the great contribution of the brave and very able Polish airmen
Just remember the Poles had even more reason to attack the Luftwaffe - the Nazis had invaded their country and they were the only part of the Polish population who could fight back - and they knew it. Who cares about who had more pilots - the Polish pilots were bloody brave and fearless AND had some of the highest individual kills in the whole of the war - not just the Battle of Britain - and deserve respect for what they did for us.
@cpj93070 Polish pilots shot down 170 and damaged 36 planes, which was 12%of Luftwaffe losses. Polish squadron was highest ranked with 126 kills during BoB. think twice.
@comankh yes 12% stop trying to take away our victory you polish always blame the uk and france for world war 2 wtf about the invaders nazi germany you bastard?
@cpj93070 you dumb scumbag. You actually sound dumber than an average American. You have no clue what you're talking about. You should be kissing Polish ass every day for the way Poland was shitted on at the beginning of the war by not getting any help, for Poland helping save Britain destroying 12% of Luftwaffe, and for the way Britain shitted on Poland again at the end of the war when Brits sold Poland to the communist Russia.Polish pilots were not even allowed to march in the victory parade.
@plsniper FUCKING POLISH TWAT shut the fuck up you woudn't be here today if it wasn't for us british where would the world be if we had made a peace treaty with germany so just think on that before shouting your mouth off you dumb polac.
@cpj93070 Spend as much time in a book learning history as you are right now in a pub, then we'll be able to talk normally. Who was the first one to fight for Europe? Poland. Germany and Russia at the same time! What is the ONLY country to fight on EVERY WW2 front? Poland. Battle of Britain finally turned around and real progres was made when Polish and Check pilots were allowed to fight. What if you made a treaty with Germany? Ha ha, you'd still be sucking German cock today.
@cpj93070 Better ask yourself what if there were no Polish and Check pilots to help? Then where you'd be? There are a lot of intelligent British people on here making posts. But you, haha, I wish I can see you face to face you dumb asshole, so I can punch you in your mouth and watch your rotten teeth spit out of your ass.
@cpj93070 Actually, sucking German cock is something you might enjoy. Looking at your photo kid, you look like a fruit cake. Maybe that's the reason you are so angry at the Poles. Maybe you did not want Poland to help with the Battle of Britain, so that right now you would be sucking German cock with pleasure. Fuck off flip flop boy.
@plsniper fucking polish twat go suck on a rats bollocks bitch your fucking to ugly to even have a picture you tranny cocksucking techtonic wank fuck.
@rafalmm the polish pilots were great in the battle of britian its just there grandkids like you who always blames the british for poland loseing in 39 why don't you blame hitler and the nazis', you idiot we coundnt have done anything anyway in the first month the french could of corse but what could we do?
@rafalmm how what could churchill have done when stalin held all the cards he was already in your country and during the warzaw uprising was pleading with stalin to let the R.A.F use there airfields, but stalin refused, even roosevelt at first declined to get on the bad side of the russians so, dont blame the british for that we wanted to help you, blame the russians and the americans if anything, oh and have you forgotton about the soviet crimes commited in 39-41 you ever thought?
@rafalmm You may recall that the US and UK were still fighting another war on the other side of the war.Politics is the art of the Possible. Poland paid a heavy price for defeating Stalin in the 20s.
Churchill alone pushed for free elections in Poland. The British leader pointed out that the UK "could never be content with any solution that did not leave Poland a free and independent state". Stalin pledged to permit free elections in Poland, but forestalled ever honoring his promise.
pah- not true- Churchill was heartbroken by what happened to Poland- but what could he do? Britain was holding no cards after WWII (after losing them all coming to Poland aid!)
Yalta was really and American and Russian thing, with Britain a spectator
@plsniper Not everything Britain did was good. I am not proud of that fact. Jut read the bloody books of the period - diaries - it tells you everything.
when all hope seemed lost the courage of a few saved this country when people are deterimed against a opresser even when the enemy have strength in numberers we still tell them where to go and fight back we will never be taken by a force of arms i mean us the scots the english and the welsh the huns tried and they got theire asess kicked let that be a lessson
@ryanl1481 Sorry my british friend th SAXONS did win and conquered your country thats why many people called the british anglo saxons so just a little historic advice and the romans of course.
Often heard during the latter stages of the BoB uttered sarcastically by the German gunners, "Hier kommt der letzen funfzig Spitfirung". ( Here comes the last fifty Spitfires ).
@musicbruv Yes, I saw that when I first saw this movie. "Spifire Productions" could only find 6 Hurricanes, and only 3 were flyable, so they had to find a solution to show a "squadron". The question is, if it had been better to use Spitfires?
@musicbruv They only had 3 Hurricanes for filming, you get the angle right and only guys like you or I would notice. Heck half the fighters in the epic BIG WING scene were 109's.
I know, and this a fact, the producers of this epic film, used a lot of Spitfires and Hurricanes from airforces all over the world, ME109's were used by the help of the Spanish airforce (btw with RR Merlin engines), but were did they get that amount of HE111's from? Great upload, Greatestman!
@Brera011 Also from the Spanish airforce (they also have Merlins). The 109s are actually Spanish-built Hispano Aviación HA-1112-M1L Buchóns and the HE-111s are actually Spanish built Construcciones Aeronáuticas S.A CASA 2.111s
i love polish people they seaved england and poland as well dosent matter they have 2 squadrons they were the best of every english squadron so SHUT UP and poland help england without polish people you wasnt here today
@Extremer231 When the Nazis invaded Poland, you used HORSES against TANKS. Let me say that again. HORSES against TANKS. Don't you dare say we needed help from people like that. The Americans were more helpful and they joined in half way through, atleast they have common sense.
@MarkramUK They didn't litterly use them against tanks, they were a mobile force with towable anti-tank guns and machine guns and were ment too get around fast in order too get such weapons like them in ideal places, worked quite well.
@TheGroundedAviator Thanks mate... I was just about to write him the same thing. And it worked well look up Battle of Mokra, unless he watched an old German Propaganda Movie.
@baruteku The Yanks never knew what it was too fight with little. They did a quasey charge on some encamped troops and one unit that was incirculed did they go for broke dash out (which worked). Even the German's would admit they'd put up a great fight.
@rafalmm Stop defending your country. Anything bad truth is "Communist Propaganda"? It's fact. Poland spent very little on its Armed Forces in the 1900's and as a result was forced to use horses. Nice try. Go and do some plumbing or illegally immigrate somewhere.
I like the british Piliot Douglas Bader no legs in a aircraft accident had 25 German planes shot down. 1941 Prisioner of war & meet a famous German Ace Adolf Galland
Yeah they should make more films about this! There was a really good Czech film a while back about a Czech squadron during the battle of Britain. I still think this is one of the best aerial combat movies ever made! The making of it was amazing if you ever get a chance to listen to the dvd commentary.
@2008VauxhallVectra Incorrect. The biggest mistake the Germans made was switching their bombing from the airfields to London. The RAF was able to then rebuild it's bases and transfer more pilots in. Since they knew what the Luftwaffe's target was, they could assemble larger numbers of fighters in defense. Before they could only get up a squadron of six aircraft at a time. The big wings were made of several squadrons and started to really hammer the Germans.
@2008VauxhallVectra oh shut up it wasn't the poles that saved us they only had 2 squadrens anyway WE US BRITISH THAT WON THAT BATTLE with the help from other nations.
There should be a movie about an actual Polish fighter pilot whose home and family was all but destroyed by the Nazi invasion of Poland...one who saw the very worst of the horrors of this invasion...who made his way to England and became one of these pilots...who became successful in a Hurricane and was later given a Spitfire...it would be a profile in courage and a great history lesson.
The Poles were bloody brilliant. They had the additional hatred of the Nazis having seen their country destroyed by them. We should never forget the Poles and the other brave nationals that made such a huge contribution to Europe's liberty.
I like this part where these polish pilots just disobeyed their flight commander's orders and engaged the german bombers and were enjoying it. Cant blame them. Since Germany occupied their country and committed atrocities there, what a way to get revenge
lol... in the german version i always got the scene with that downed polish pilot wrong. i thought they captured a german on that field because in the german version the guy said "ein wunderschöner afternoon"^^
by the way, i also never understood why the poles where cheering when they got told that they are assigned before the translation came... seems like they DO understand english, if they just want to. ;)
The air war in WW2 did seem to favour experienced fighter pilots: If you got to a good skill level you could shoot many times your number of opponents down (As the Poles did in the Battle of Britain) but if someone got ahead in experienced flyers you were really screwed.

In the Polish radio talk, a rather naughty word is used which does not fit in with the language used in the rest of the script!

The Battle of Britain was the most important victory in the first three years of World War 2. I'm looking forward to the next Hollywood movie where it was Patton, not Dowding who completely overhauled the RAF and lead it to victory. God Bless the Poles and Czechs for helping out the Empire.
bigjobs5000 3 months ago
Why in the name of God are you arguing about who shot who??? Didn't the Poles and Czecks give their lives just like the British? I always thank God that they were there to help us!
mikjon67 3 months ago
@cpj93070 oh dude. only if brits helped poles @1939 like they did in battle of britain...
comankh 3 months ago
@comankh True, in 1939 Poland didn't get any help. Then Poland helped in the battle of Britain, just to be sold to Communist Russia after the end of the war. The victory parade in London right after the war ended did not include Polish pilots. They couldn't understand why. Soon they found out. So Poland got backstabbed in 1939 and again in 1945.
plsniper 3 months ago 14
@plsniper we also sold out Czechoslovakia in the same way - It was a great shame to my country - we failed to recognise the great contribution of the brave and very able Polish airmen
englishredbird 3 weeks ago
Just remember the Poles had even more reason to attack the Luftwaffe - the Nazis had invaded their country and they were the only part of the Polish population who could fight back - and they knew it. Who cares about who had more pilots - the Polish pilots were bloody brave and fearless AND had some of the highest individual kills in the whole of the war - not just the Battle of Britain - and deserve respect for what they did for us.
jasperozzie61 4 months ago
if you didn't have us (polish) there, you wouldn't win this war... - remember about this...
VictorSeedorsky 4 months ago
@VictorSeedorsky fuck you polish twat this was OUR VICTORY you only had 180 pilots the allied pilots only made up 15% of the total pilots.
cpj93070 4 months ago
@cpj93070 Polish pilots shot down 170 and damaged 36 planes, which was 12%of Luftwaffe losses. Polish squadron was highest ranked with 126 kills during BoB. think twice.
comankh 4 months ago 3
@comankh yes 12% stop trying to take away our victory you polish always blame the uk and france for world war 2 wtf about the invaders nazi germany you bastard?
cpj93070 4 months ago
@cpj93070 you dumb scumbag. You actually sound dumber than an average American. You have no clue what you're talking about. You should be kissing Polish ass every day for the way Poland was shitted on at the beginning of the war by not getting any help, for Poland helping save Britain destroying 12% of Luftwaffe, and for the way Britain shitted on Poland again at the end of the war when Brits sold Poland to the communist Russia.Polish pilots were not even allowed to march in the victory parade.
plsniper 3 months ago
@plsniper FUCKING POLISH TWAT shut the fuck up you woudn't be here today if it wasn't for us british where would the world be if we had made a peace treaty with germany so just think on that before shouting your mouth off you dumb polac.
cpj93070 3 months ago
@cpj93070 Spend as much time in a book learning history as you are right now in a pub, then we'll be able to talk normally. Who was the first one to fight for Europe? Poland. Germany and Russia at the same time! What is the ONLY country to fight on EVERY WW2 front? Poland. Battle of Britain finally turned around and real progres was made when Polish and Check pilots were allowed to fight. What if you made a treaty with Germany? Ha ha, you'd still be sucking German cock today.
plsniper 3 months ago
@cpj93070 Better ask yourself what if there were no Polish and Check pilots to help? Then where you'd be? There are a lot of intelligent British people on here making posts. But you, haha, I wish I can see you face to face you dumb asshole, so I can punch you in your mouth and watch your rotten teeth spit out of your ass.
plsniper 3 months ago
@cpj93070 Actually, sucking German cock is something you might enjoy. Looking at your photo kid, you look like a fruit cake. Maybe that's the reason you are so angry at the Poles. Maybe you did not want Poland to help with the Battle of Britain, so that right now you would be sucking German cock with pleasure. Fuck off flip flop boy.

@rafalmm You may recall that the US and UK were still fighting another war on the other side of the war.Politics is the art of the Possible. Poland paid a heavy price for defeating Stalin in the 20s.
DonMeaker 2 months ago
@rafalmm
Churchill alone pushed for free elections in Poland. The British leader pointed out that the UK "could never be content with any solution that did not leave Poland a free and independent state". Stalin pledged to permit free elections in Poland, but forestalled ever honoring his promise.

@rafalmm
pah- not true- Churchill was heartbroken by what happened to Poland- but what could he do? Britain was holding no cards after WWII (after losing them all coming to Poland aid!)
Yalta was really and American and Russian thing, with Britain a spectator
CDStoner 2 months ago
@plsniper Britain lost 347,000 lives and its Empire and a debt that it has only just paid off attempting to save Poland.
I might add the assistance that Poland gave Argentina in its war of aggression against the UK in 1982. That is gratitude for you.

Any one notice that the planes behind the Hurricanes in this clip are BF 109's?
musicbruv 6 months ago
@musicbruv Yes, I saw that when I first saw this movie. "Spifire Productions" could only find 6 Hurricanes, and only 3 were flyable, so they had to find a solution to show a "squadron". The question is, if it had been better to use Spitfires?
YDDES 5 months ago
@musicbruv They only had 3 Hurricanes for filming, you get the angle right and only guys like you or I would notice. Heck half the fighters in the epic BIG WING scene were 109's.

I know, and this a fact, the producers of this epic film, used a lot of Spitfires and Hurricanes from airforces all over the world, ME109's were used by the help of the Spanish airforce (btw with RR Merlin engines), but were did they get that amount of HE111's from? Great upload, Greatestman!
Brera011 7 months ago
@Brera011 Also from the Spanish airforce (they also have Merlins). The 109s are actually Spanish-built Hispano Aviación HA-1112-M1L Buchóns and the HE-111s are actually Spanish built Construcciones Aeronáuticas S.A CASA 2.111s

@Extremer231 When the Nazis invaded Poland, you used HORSES against TANKS. Let me say that again. HORSES against TANKS. Don't you dare say we needed help from people like that. The Americans were more helpful and they joined in half way through, atleast they have common sense.
MarkramUK 3 months ago
@MarkramUK They didn't litterly use them against tanks, they were a mobile force with towable anti-tank guns and machine guns and were ment too get around fast in order too get such weapons like them in ideal places, worked quite well.
TheGroundedAviator 3 months ago
@TheGroundedAviator Thanks mate... I was just about to write him the same thing. And it worked well look up Battle of Mokra, unless he watched an old German Propaganda Movie.
baruteku 3 months ago
@baruteku The Yanks never knew what it was too fight with little. They did a quasey charge on some encamped troops and one unit that was incirculed did they go for broke dash out (which worked). Even the German's would admit they'd put up a great fight.
TheGroundedAviator 3 months ago
Horses against tanks its well know thats communist propaganda.
rafalmm 2 months ago
@rafalmm Stop defending your country. Anything bad truth is "Communist Propaganda"? It's fact. Poland spent very little on its Armed Forces in the 1900's and as a result was forced to use horses. Nice try. Go and do some plumbing or illegally immigrate somewhere.

The brits were almost fineshed.
1 more week of heavy bombings by the luftwaffe and Dday never took place.
2008VauxhallVectra 1 year ago
@2008VauxhallVectra Incorrect. The biggest mistake the Germans made was switching their bombing from the airfields to London. The RAF was able to then rebuild it's bases and transfer more pilots in. Since they knew what the Luftwaffe's target was, they could assemble larger numbers of fighters in defense. Before they could only get up a squadron of six aircraft at a time. The big wings were made of several squadrons and started to really hammer the Germans.
saintrobbie375 1 year ago 2
@2008VauxhallVectra oh shut up it wasn't the poles that saved us they only had 2 squadrens anyway WE US BRITISH THAT WON THAT BATTLE with the help from other nations.

Beautiful! Steer 2-3-0..."Repeat please"...Vroooom!! "Repeat please"...Vroooom!!
