Yeah the dawg won't setle down. Just take out the garbage and the dawg will do that. Its annoying but funny when you can sarcastically say that you were only gone for 7 years! :P
Everytime my mom leaves and I'll be in my room, my dog will think she's home alone because she doesn't know I'm home. From the moment my moms car drives off, she will sit by the front window and howl very loudly. It's so sad, but so cute.
dogs think in sequencing order, but they have no perception of time, so
"Masters gone :(, ... food, ... nap... Masters back :D" all in lets say 1 day,
but to the dog there was no time lost in that sequence. which is why they can wait for their master for long periods of time and still remain very loyal,
problem is the relativity index of human life in relation to whatever other life being you mention, fly, dog, oahmeba. it's like the size relationship between human hands and fruit, such that most fruit in the world fits comfortably in the palm of your hand. that relativity size index is perfect for the most part...likewise the time differential btwn a fly, say, & yur life expansion is perfect, because: and heres the solution to your problem - the thinking capacity of the fly is proportional
the reason she's responding like that, is reliant on how you part with your dog. next time you go out, don't say goodbye, don't pat her, don't say stay... distract her with a ball or something, feed her (not a treat, dogs have a diffrent understanding of what a treat is, she'll think you're praising her, or want something from her.) and when she's distracted, sneak out. Then she will not bark while your gone. THUMBS UP so he can see. TRUST ME IT WORKS!
You said on your video Adorable Puppy that dogs have superior noses and ears so don't worry she doesn't bark the hole time you're gone only when she smells you or listen to you !!!!
my dog can scent my when I'm in a taxi so by the time I go into my house all my neighbours are awake !!!
You could leave a camera recording... or you could just ask your neighbors...? But to calm her anxiety, you could leave a radio on at a low volume. There are also dog toys that you can fill with peanut butter and freeze it to keep her occupied. One other thing you could try would be to get a blanket or piece of cloth and rub your scent on it, then leave it with the dog when you go out.
how do you know shes barking the whole time? don't forget dogs have a great sense of smell and hearing so she might just start barking when she hears you coming home
Dan!! The dog knows when you are coming home.. Leave a recorder on at your home for the day on the computer to check if he is barking during the day. Dogs have a 6th sense and they know that you are coming. This has been studied, and nobody knows why but it is true. Make a check with your windows sound recorder etc. Before you take her to the kennel!
Dogs have a poor sense of object permanence. When you leave it's possible that they think you're never coming back. Some people alleviate this by turning on the tv or a talk radio show and leaving it on when they leave. Hearing people talking makes the dog think you're still there.
People saying to use a bark collar have a valid suggestion but I don't think it should be your first solution.
I'd like to compound @zippythewildone 's idea. Dan!!! You should plug a computer into some good speakers and play a playlist of your videos on youtube.
You gotta train her. with my new puppy i just got, they made me get a crate so im slowly crate training her. when i leave, she goes in the crate, if she does something bad she goes in the crate and like your dog, she'll whine and bark forever, and like you, i live in an apartment and dont want to annoy neighbors, but you gotta just ignore it because eventually she'll learn and won't do it anymore.
Why is Jay-Z one of your tags? Anyway, my dog is kennel trained and I think maybe that comforts her when I am gone. A kennel is a safe place for her and maybe she would benefit from that sense of security.
My 7 year old cat STILL does the same thing. I haven't got complaints about her thankfully. When I am walking up to the building after work and can hear her I think it's because she's used to my routine and knows I should be home any moment now and she's excited. She is also very needy since her mom was taken away from her and her siblings far too young so she never got to fully develope... I have NO idea what that has to do with your situation though! haha, sorry! record Ani while you're gone.
Dan, my dog is the same as Ani :) Ani probably doesn't bark the entire time you're gone. My dog(a Maltese/Bichon mixed aka one of those little dogs haha) can sense my mom before she's even out of her car. She would pull into the driveway(we also live in an apartment) and he would run to the door and start crying and pawing at it already. Ani just senses when her master is home :)
There's this shirt called the "thunder shirt" that you can put on dogs suffering from noise and separation anxiety. It's an adjustable, tight shirt that swaddles dogs. It puts constant pressure on their nervous system which calms them down. It works really well on our Boston Terrier. =)
dan, one way to tackle the problem is to simply ignore ani, until she stops barking. don't even acknowledge her. but when she stops barking and jumping give her her favorite treat and give her affection. she'll soon get the picture, but it might take a few tries.
Dogs have no sense of time, which can explain such high levels of excitement to see you. You can be gone for 20 mins and it will feel like several hours or even days to them. My family has a dog that gets even more excited than Ani when I come home.
well, a last resort solution for yyour dog would be to get another dog. Dogs are not stupid animals, they are social creatures and if she can't interact with you she could have something else to interact with. It worked wonders for all of our dogs. The biggest benefit is if you have her set the example of what to do, training the new one will be easier.
Hey Dan. I only just saw your vids, lead here by charlieissocoollike on youtubillionare. But all I can say is, I really respect you for attempting Dan 3.0..... It must have been hard, and I only really saw Dan 3.0 , I just don't have time to watch your life on youtube so far, but well done. Your a nice guy you know, and I'd just like to say, thankyou. You've really inspired vloggers , and I think it's really dedicated of you to do that. From an English Person in England.
The Humane Society advises owners of dogs with separation anxiety: Don't make a big deal out of arrivals and departures. For example, when you arrive home, ignore your dog for the first few minutes then calmly pet him. Leave your dog with an article of clothing that smells like you, such as an old T-shirt that you've slept in recently. Establish a safety cue—a word or action that you use every time you leave that tells your dog you'll be back. Consider using an over-the-counter calming product
This is an odd phenomenon, but dogs seem to sense when their loved ones are near home. I don't know how it happens but whenever my Mum is out, about two minutes before she gets home my two dogs run around barking like mad.
one thing we do for our dog is put an article of clothing that someone has worn near the door, and so whenever we are away, and she comes to the door, she hopefully smells us and calms down
Adult: Once the adult house fly hatches from the pupal stage, it has an approximate life span of 15 to 30 days. Females are able to start producing eggs after two days of life and will continue to lay eggs for about a month.
wait wait...did I miss something? did Dan move somewhere permanently? I knew he left San fran and was back in Nebraska...but where exactly is he, Brownies?
Dear Youtube followers: I have no idea how to train a dog and never bothered to learn. I don't know who Cesar Milan is. Sincerely, Dan Brown P.S. House flies only live a day even though it takes longer than that for them to mature enough to mate. Please explain.
Awww Ani is so adorable! My dog does the same thing whenever I come home from school. Try telling her to go find a toy, and play with her after she settles down. Usually works for me.
So, Dan, if you really wan't to know does Ani bark all the time when you are gone just put your camera (-s if you got many) to record what Ani is doing, and leave for like an hour or something depending on how long your camera(s) can record. AND show it to US!
its separation anxiety. my dog really calms down when i use rescue remedy. you can buy it at most health food stores or online. i recommend the spray pump kind not the dropper bottle. my dog is small like yours so i would pump one spray on her nozzle before you leave & one right when you get home. REALLY HELPS!
I think you should do some recon first. Set up the camera and record her while you are away and see how long she throws a fit or if she does at all. I did the same thing because one of my dogs would pitch a royal fit when I walked around the block but when I went to work she didn't make a peep. Research has shown that dogs can be well aware of there owners returning with out any obvious cues.
Make a voice recording of you saying her name and play it whenever your gone. Maybe just hearing your voice will calm her down a bit while your gone. Also, when you greet her, don't use a high pitched squeal-y voice. That'll only get her more excited.
Wow, flies... I never stood still about how time means something different to every kind of living thing on the planet. Also, you might wanna go to dog school if possible. And watch some shows of Cesar Milan's dog whispering
It's called separation anxiety, a couple of pointers. If the dog jumps your legs like in the video, turn away from it and ignore the dog. In general giving attention to the dog when returning is a bad idea.
But doing a little reading on dog psychology and pack leadership would probably be a good idea.
You could turn the radio on when you are out so your dog doesn't feel alone.
However since it might be responding to human presence with the barking that might just make it bark for the entire duration of your time away. This one is a doosey.
i'm pretty sure your dog doesn't bark the whole entire periods of time that you're gone. i think she may bark when she senses human presence or maybe even a familiar smell. when my dog was alive and we would come home he would immediately start barking as we entered the foyer ( and we lived on the second floor of an apartment in park slope so there was a good amount of distance and he could still hear that someone had entered the building).
@tehchickster but then again it is likely that your apartment window is near a sidewalk and many people pass so she could be barking constantly.... in which case i really shouldn't have typed all of this :(
but i find you entertaining so it was worth it. :)
Hey man, I was watching your blog and then i was drawn to wikipedia to read on flies and i got that:
The adult flies then emerge from the pupae. (This whole cycle is known as complete metamorphosis.) The adults live from two weeks to a month in the wild, or longer in benign laboratory conditions. (wikipedia on Housefly)
I don't think she will stop doing that every time you arrive home. I have my dog for 8 years and he always jumps around and that when someone arrives. He also barks when we're leaving but he eventually stops. We talk with him softly saying for him to calm down and to not make so much noise and pet him. It works with him.

We humans tracks time in another way than animals. They just live their life, they don't could seconds.
Five seconds can "feel" like forever, since they have no track on time.
But that's just my theory.

Dogs don't have a sense of time.

its separation anxiety. my dog really calms down when i use rescue remedy. you can buy it at most health food stores or online. i recommend the spray pump kind not the dropper bottle. my dog is small like yours so i would pump one spray on her nozzle before you leave & one right when you get home.

Im cruel to animals. im cruel to every animal. even humans. though i usually don't squash humans..
whatever animal who is creepy and small enough and slow enough, i'll kill. if it is in my room that is ^^

Make a voice recording of you saying her name and play it whenever your gone. Maybe just hearing your voice will calm her down a bit while your gone. Also, when you greet her, don't use a high pitched squeal-y voice. That'll only get her more excited.

I would suggest another dog. Canines have a pack mentality

This one is a doosey.

watch the dog whisperer bro.
CoverDrummer94 6 months ago
i'm pretty sure your dog doesn't bark the whole entire periods of time that you're gone. i think she may bark when she senses human presence or maybe even a familiar smell. when my dog was alive and we would come home he would immediately start barking as we entered the foyer ( and we lived on the second floor of an apartment in park slope so there was a good amount of distance and he could still hear that someone had entered the building).
tehchickster 6 months ago
@tehchickster but then again it is likely that your apartment window is near a sidewalk and many people pass so she could be barking constantly.... in which case i really shouldn't have typed all of this :(
but i find you entertaining so it was worth it. :)

Hey man, I was watching your blog and then i was drawn to wikipedia to read on flies and i got that:
The adult flies then emerge from the pupae. (This whole cycle is known as complete metamorphosis.) The adults live from two weeks to a month in the wild, or longer in benign laboratory conditions. (wikipedia on Housefly)

did you wash your arm after? since flies puke on things...yukky!

solution: get another dog! if a dog has a companion than they will be less dependent on you- simple as tht

I don't think she will stop doing that every time you arrive home. I have my dog for 8 years and he always jumps around and that when someone arrives. He also barks when we're leaving but he eventually stops. We talk with him softly saying for him to calm down and to not make so much noise and pet him. It works with him.
