  • die Musik passt leider nicht so...

  • I thought I saw something like this in San Francisco in the '60s, or maybe it was just the drugs?

  • @tomt6040 both

  • This is amazing, the kind of performance that would blow your mind away~~

Props to post-minimalism and those funky shaped brass instruments, not to mention those gliding machines!!!

  • It's like some sort of KKK organisation out to get white people instead... (no offence to anyone).

  • Everyone should really watch Koyaanisqatsi. You may see life a little different after.

  • .... However nine escaped the salem witch trials by riding off with segways they got from a sorcerer.. they then went on to start a band..

  • Hm, Rollerskates i guess? :O

  • Just great !!!

  • I flashmob every friday with my friends

  • This is way better than the CD version.

  • I thought it was about a cult in the beginning.

  • Dear Glissendo,

Please come to fire-art-music-loving Burning Man in Nevada this year! You would be the hit of the Playa! And you would meet amazing like-minded people from all over the world! So...see you there?! I'll pick you up at the Reno airport!

  • I am quite in awe! I think I may also be all agog!

  • i like the one with a flame on its head!

  • Beautiful! This reminds me of the scene in The Princess Bride where they have Fezzik in the wheelbarrow, gliding along while wearing a flaming holocaust cloak.

  • Applause!

  • Whoa, that looks like something that would happen in an episode of Dr. Who.

  • kinda creepy

  • That performance is awesome

    certainly, it`s an inspiration.

  • This video is a decent way to simulate an acid trip that you might have if you go camping after you watch a documentary about dixieland jazz. Except it's over in 5 minutes instead of 7 hours.

  • Uploader, you might want to add a "yt:stretch=16:9" tag in order to fix the aspect ratio. You should probably also read this article. reelseo.com/youtube-aspect-ratio/

  • lol AMazing :D

  • I love this song. Great Philip Glass piece and a very deep song with the voice of Suzanne Vega. But this performance is really nice. I've never thought this song this way.

  • Bizarre!

  • Wonderful!

  • great great great!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The Mighty Mighty Bosstones are more conical-shaped than I remember....

  • couldn't place what it put me in mind of, watched the next link where they preform and it's a bit lighter and it came to me....all the twisted horns...Dr.Suess, those bizarre horns, the sounds. yep.

  • lol.. they're just gettin money 4 the cult

  • are they all on segways?!

  • Saw them in London at the Thames festival: without doubt one of the most unique and amazing things I have ever seen. Truly beautiful: more so in person.

  • This has got to be the single most strange thing I have ever seen. Catchy music though!

  • watch this!

  • wow....really odd. Cool, but most of the time i was like "wtf?!"

  • it's like there on those seguas things or something.

  • how do they glide like that it looks so unnatural.

  • They ride on machines which are powered by human dreams ...

  • see a reply to another comment down a few lines - not quite as fanciful, but still, the overall effect is amazing!

it is called Hands Free - sort of like a Segway but without a hand controller. More info at handsfree-transporter (.) com

  • @yoyaoo Roller scates lol

  • @yoyaoo it's called "stagecraft'!

  • @yoyaoo my guess is rollerskates

  • One of the scariest things I've ever seen. I feel the urge to flag it. lol

  • LOL, indeed!

  • simply astonishing and delightful

  • how do they do the gliding effect?

  • they are riding on a 2 wheeled product called Hands Free - sort of like a Segway but without a hand controller. More info at handsfree-transporter (.) com

  • oh like a camera man would use! thanks:)

  • Saw this troupe tonight in Greenwich, London. Absolutely AMAZING.

  • The musicians are a group from France called Fanfare Le S.N.O.B (fanfarelesnob com) and you can see more of this performance by clicking "Glissendo"

  • And they are fabulous musicians! I think their arrangement of Lightning is much better than the original (especially their decision to replace the naff vocals with chanting).

My favourite bit is where the up-tempo thing resumes at 2:46 - their tinny sounding percussion instruments/crash cymbals sound great with the sousaphone.

I'm just not bowled over by the Segway & fire thing...

  • After 40 years of horn playing and marching, and 30 minutes of attempted Segway - I am totally impressed! There are dancers all over the world who try for that "gliding" effect - this gets it, plus the height of the costumes would otherwise be done with stilts - would not be the same.

To do all this while playing (with fire) + great concepts, well executed!

(and the custom Sousaphone is GREAT - probably very unbalanced...)

  • Comment removed

  • I meant physically unbalanced - if you look at some close-ups on the group website you can see there are braces coming out of the costume to hold up the horn.

  • those naff vocals are great. i love ms pendarvis

  • fair enough; I should have said that I thought the lyrics were terrible instead

  • The Knights who say Ni! ?

  • Brilliant !

    SEGWAYs + FIRE ?!?!

    Its the future...

  • I like your line of thought!

  • in response to snarfyguy: they are riding the i2 model segway, which you technically can ride with no hands (the handlebar leans left and right to steer)...I think they have strapped themselves tot he handlebar so they can lean and make it turn...i'm a segway tour guide in atlanta-- we use these and i sometiems gesture with two hands and steer with my knee...shh but don't tell my boss. :)

  • I think these guys sound fantastic (some interesting/wacky instruments), but their choreography isn't that interesting.

It sounds a lot better than it looks.

  • Comment removed

  • That was really cool. Are they on unicycles or are they skating?

To all the people that post negative comments...have you never heard the expression "if you cant say something nice dont say anything at all'? I mean honestly, whats wrong with you? At least give constructive criticism...sheesh!

  • They're on Segways.

  • I thought you needed to use your hands to ride a Segway. How are the performers able to execute all that choreography while playing musical instruments *and* operating those things (in sych!)?

  • I will be sure to refund your money as soon as possible.

  • Please direct all complaints to the desk clerk at your local 7-11.

  • Philip Glass is fantastic. This ensemble and performance are such a wonderful treatment of the music. Bravo!

  • Things rarely 'creep me out'.

But this, however, is REALLY fucking creepy.

  • Comment removed

  • Cool, creepy and amazing all at once!

  • Looks like something out of a Tim Burton film with Danny Elfman directing the music, lol.

    Awesome stuff. 5/5

  • The sound is being captured by multiple microphones, in the open air, and they are moving. It's not ideal for recording music. The recording is pretty unlikely to be doing them justice.

  • It's impossible to tell. The microphones are dropping sound here and there, and they are moving away from and towards them. You may be right, but the nature of the performance is such that the small errors in timing could be, and likely are down to the problems in recording something like this. Timing can easily be bodged by someone not properly aligning multiple sound sources. It is being recorded on handycams after all.

  • Outdoor acoustics could well be to blame. Marching and playing an instrument is hard enough, but add in a segue, and I think they do an ADMIRABLE job! Give them the credit they deserve! :) Bravo!

  • Ladies and Gentlemen, Witches and Wizards...it's the Slytherin House Marching Band!

  • Lol, I thought so as well, or a Snape Clone band!

  • I feel like I will see this after I am dead.

  • This comment, like this performance, is made of win.

  • meh

  • this makes me so effing happy.

  • Amazing.

  • freakin.. creapy

  • this is definitely not what makes crop circles, its far too loud

  • Wonderful design work.

  • I loved this. the visual aspect suited the music perfectly.

  • THIS is the best use of the segway EVER.

  • I would agree with you, but then I thought of the fat mall cops who need segways to keep up with the walking paces of normal humans. That sight-humor is what I believe to be the best use of segways.

  • Playing such sad music on such whimsical instruments creates such a strange disconnect--but somehow it works! Peace.

  • Segways provide their gliding effect.

  • How are they achieving that gliding effect? This is wonderful

  • Haha..... impressive!!

  • Its so great how it looks like their just glidin' everywhere!

  • AWESOME AWESOMY AWESOME!!

  • cool!

  • LOL! this is the best cover i have ever seen. LOL! philliip glass' freezing done by the cast of Dark City. Awesome...and replete with banjo!

  • Bravo!

  • thats so bizar. i love it

  • That is sick! I love it!! Brilliant. I'm sure if Phil saw this, he'd be honored!

  • Those are some wacky horns.
