i remeber this kinda hockey when i was a kid,,these bench clearing brawls would happen so often,i would get bored watching it..lol..imagine if this happened now,,it would make front page news.
Doogs running after Nicky to make sure he was OK, as Jim Gordon said. People sometimes forget that Doogs was pretty badass and NEVER turned down a challenge to a fight.
You know this kind of chaos gets ridiculous after a while. Better that Fotiu and Durbano handle this on their own at center ice. I think Fotiu was a more solid and stable player. Durbano was just nuts.
Starring around 2:19 THIS IS HOCKEY!...TAKE ALL THE VISOR WEARING PUSSIES OUTTA THE GAME KEEP THE GAME AMERICAN AND CANADIAN SO WE CAN HAVE MORE AWESOME BRAWLS LIKE THIS...THIS IS NOT AN OUTCRY FOR VIOLENCE...THERES NOTHING WRONG WITH A GOOD OLE SCRAPS AND BRAWLS
Bingo.... Gordon's doing the play by play and the Big Whistle (a former referee) is doing the color. Probably taped off WOR - and I was probably watching this one
Durbano was one of the dirtiest
Whistle didn't hold back either - love the jab at Fred Shero (gotta love the shades indoors)
I saw Bob Kelly beat the crap out of Durbano at a nationally televised game between the Blues and the Flyers at the Spectrum.I think it was around March of '73. Durbano sticked the Flyers trainer and Kelly hopped over the boards and literally pounded Durbano all the way across the ice to the other side. Real crowd pleaser!
Today, on 02/09/2008, I am watching the Rangers vs the Flyers and the thought occurred to me, "There was a guy names "Steve" something or other who bent over at the Garden crowd after a fight" (I forgot that Nick Fotiu was involved), but I remember watching that game when I was about 15 years old (as it turns out the year is on this video confirms that).
Thank God for YOUTUBE and the folks who upload these videos. It is like bringing one's memory back from time gone past...
I was only seven years old when this kind of hockey was played...my god do I miss this good stuff. All the action and drama and never really knowing a game would end in two-and-half hours. There were some classic brawls between the Flyers and Rangers. Why do they have to Americanize everythimg and take all teh fighting out?
I think this was '81...I remember this liek yesterday. Nicky rule sman, thye crowd loved him, especially how he used to toss pucks in the crowd after every practice. And Shero belongs in the Hall of Fame.
Durbano was more of a goon that Dave Schultz and Tiger Williams were. He was a sick puppie. Years later he was arrested for his involvement in smuggling half a million bucks worth of cocaine into Canada.
Durbano was a thug and a troublemaker everywhere he went. During his WHA stint with the brawling Birmingham Bulls, where he obviously fit in all too well, he jumped off the bench to tackle Bobby Hull from behind.
This set off the second major bench-clearing between the Jets and the Bulls that season.
The Hammer and the Tiger were more notorious because they spent their careers in the NHL; but unlike Durbano, they could also score goals now and again.
Steve could score. he was a great player, but the chips fell in a way that he be a policeman on the ice, and he did a great job. he's one of my favorites!
Fotiu was not anyone to mess around with. As an Islander then and now, I remember him being one of the tougher fighters in the league. Guy was born and raised in Staten Island and lived out his dream to be a New York Ranger, so that is where his passion came from.

Ironic that Durbano was actually the 13th pick ( and second in the first round ) for the Rangers in the 1971 draft....

Could be 78, 79, or 80. Cause Espo was still their and he retired before the 80-81 season.

Wasnt Durbano actually a fairly skilled player himself? Thats what Ive read, although he was a Dman so he wont have put up high goal totals.
