I picked up that compression tool many years ago at Sears (Craftsman). It was so long ago that I don't remember how much I paid for it. I am finally getting a chance to use it.
I understand from other engine people that the gaps in the rings need to be staggered to avoid oil and gas leakage.
Thanks for the wealth of information. Anytime that I need small engine info, I head straight to Canada (on youtube)!
@donyboy73 never had that problem, but i used my knife to push the rings into the cylinder =P, dont think your supposed to do that but hey it worked after about forever!
im rebuilding my mower engine and im trying to do it with spending minimal money is there i way i could do it without a Compressor? or is there a way i could make one?
I am trying to rebuild a weed trimmer with 2 piston rings, the compressor I have won't seem to squeeze the rings enough. It is a 1 1/8 - 3 inch compressor. I broke 1 ring trying to get it in the cylinder. Any tips? Thanks
@donyboy73 Thanks for responding, I tried to squeeze them, 1 edge would still stick out, is it possible I got the wrong size?I tried to squeeze 1 ring, also the edge would be sticking out, It is a Shindaiwa T 25, old trimmer, I'm not sure if I order more rings if the size would be right or not.
I have a 28 hp engine that the piston has a hole in it. The company is out of business. How do I fix it. can It be welded? Or can I use lab metal? If not how do I get another piston?
@outdoorsman310 your not going to find this perticular size/brand of piston in a junk yard. It is a diashi kosho engine. not very common. But thanks. Guess I'll just have one made.
also if your doing an ATV cylinder, or something like that with a removable cylinder. if your doing it with NO ring compressor the cylinder is way bigger on the bottom side. so its easier to put the piston on the rod and then slide the cylinder over the piston
Usefull tool. Hehe remember myself cursing for 15 minutes straight when trying to hold 2 slippery piston rings and a lubed piston with my fingers, trying to get the damn thing in the cylinder. xD
Hi' Dony was wondering what brand is your oil can/gun with the plastic hose attached? also what brand is you vintage twin carbon arc torch? mine is a forney
great video as ALWAYS! you are by far the best on tube!!!!!
be sure you buy a proper size/range because once you go over a certain size the compressor will still fit but it will be impossible to tighten even though it would go small as a pipe without a piston. I never bought a real ring compressor, I make mines out of a neat 1mm thick and 40mm wide strap of inox with industrial clamps similar to hose clamps.
Donyboy73, now in HD. Wish these would automatically download cause it does take a few. Wonder how many people are actually downloading the HD version.

@gtr2222 make sure the end of the ring meets with the pin in the groove or else it will stick out.

it looks very handy, but unusable for small two cycle engines, where the cylinder going from top to the crankcase , like engines on motorbikes.

Does it matter on where the ring gap is position on 4 cycle and 2 cycle engines? Loved your video.

you did not mention to off set the the rings to stop oil and or combustion gasses leaking by them

Cool video man ! I use a hose clamp but I probably shouldn't do that. I haven't had any problems with it yet but you never know using a hose clamp.
