This polar shift happens once every 500,000 years approximately. Mass extinctions happen about every 250 million years. If the rotation of the Earth was to change that dramatically every time the poles changed then mass extinctions would happen 500 times more often. The polar shift will probably do a lot of damage but I don't think it will cause a change in the direction of rotation.

@JuliaB1955 look up bolger boats- their design is pretty much "unsinkable" because of their flat bottom and surface area of contact on the water-
their not used much because the design is very slow in the water as opposed to keels
