  • I think I was there - was this the tour where the Sundays supported TM? Best gig EVER!

  • what a great band!

  • For all the people who are watching this, I saw these guys at "The Living Room" back in 1984 in Providence R.I. and they opened for my friends band "Boy on Fire". I still remember that the drummer had no cymbals. Weird. There were not too many people there that night but it was still fun.

  • @equinox212 , Glad you saw it. I saw them at the Living room in 87 and 88, and 89. The muses opened up for the Pixies in '89. Bob Giusti from Rash of Stabbings ran the sound board back then. The plexiglass bubble is immemorable.

  • I could be a smack freak... already was addicted to smack 4 years... now it's been over 4 years since I touched it. Yay me!

  • Like if American Horror Story brought you here =]

  • @Stellar2591 I think it's cool that they used that song, but I've been listening to Kristin and the Muses since 1995. Whatever brings people to the music is OK. American Horror Story is an awesome show.

  • Dave N. is pretty much everything Keith Moon was (minus the fame.)

... astounding. impossible. head and neck above the riffraff. what a goddamn G.

  • Not to take anything away from Kristin Hersh, because she's the only lyricist I have heard who can employ what seem like stream-of-consciousness lyrics and still be incredibly moving (and I include Bowie in that, whose songs always seemed like cold experiments), but the drums on this are like a fucking orchestral composition.

David Narcizo's writing through this period of the Throwing Muses should have made him one of the most famous drummers in rock history. The drumming really is astounding.

  • Brilliant lyrics, beautifully constructed and cross eyed with passion. I nominate it as a repalcement for our national anthem.

  • @molloyxx this IS OUR REAL NATIONAL ANTHEM-THE one you hear screaming underneath the other- ....everyday....every where you go and see things that make you hurt

  • "I CAN'T FIND THE ICE!!!!!" seeing them play this back then was always the highlight of my week..... saw 'em a couple of times at Chet's (Penalty Box Upstairs). those were the mf'in days i tell ya.

  • fuckin LOVE IT!!

  • I'm crying...

  • So fucking powerful.

  • love the song, hate the video

  • thanks for posting this!!!! awesome!

  • Great catch. Well, the video leaves a bit to be desired, but the audio is awesome. I think it's the best recorded live version of "Hate My Way" that exists on YouTube, and I have watched them all, haha.

  • yeah the lyrics are devastating and frightening, but it's all so beautiful too, amazing

  • LOVE HER VOICE!!!

  • Who cares about the gender crap? At any rate, I first heard this song on college radio back in the late 80s. It broke through my normally controlled demeanor, and I was in tears throughout the song. Muses always make me cry.

  • @Greendayfan911 I know the Mr. Huberty part refers to a guy who shot of bunch of people, including some kids, at, I believe, a McDonald's back around the time this song was written. I'm glad to see that a person with a screen name such as yours is finding out about GOOD MUSIC. haha, jk, bro.

  • My pillow screams too,

    but so does my kitchen

God! I forgot about this song!!

This song helped me through a couple bad teen years....

  • The quintessential Muses song. Oh wait, I already said that about Say Goodbye....oh well

  • Leslie FREAKING Langston!

  • I was at this gig. I sat in the balcony,

The Pixies were on first, doing support. I'd never heard them.

I remember them playing this song.

  • @Greendayfan911 powells.com has an amazing interview w/ her that talks about this song, but youtube doesn't seem to have the generosity to let me post a link to it. Just google for it.

  • Been following the Muses for over 20 years now. Being from the Boston, MA Providence, RI area they were one of those seminal Indy bands that make this city so great to live in. Along with the Pixies and Tribe. Great music to grow up to.

  • @waxxer321: Yeah, but at 0:50 bass is out of tune! :)

  • One of my favorite songs. Am I the only person that's noticed the audio and video aren't in synch... Or does it not matter cuz they rock so hard ... Which they do. Is it just my connection ?

  • They can no longer move I can no longer be still

    Absolute genius.

  • This track shows how good a band Throwing Muses were. Drumming, guittars, bass, vocals and harmonies are all spot on. It's brillianr how they can replicate what appears to be an intricate piece of music .

  • Bless you for this: I was there! This is probably my favourite 'song' (so much more than a song though, ain't it?).

    Thank you so much

    Vazza x

  • One of their best songs.

  • Today I've sent a message to 4AD asking them to release a DVD of this performance.

  • eight months later. any luck?

  • Kristin rocks!! Love her...

  • I CAN'T FIND THE ICE!

  • Newport's own...one of the best!!!!

  • I agree.

I was shocked when they made the cover of british music rag NME in 1986, as a testament to how far they went.

  • Still my favourite song of all time by any band. Can't stop getting a lump in my throat every time I hear it, even 20+ years later. Saw them at Leeds Poly on this tour. What a night! This is really bringing the memories back.

  • "they can no longer move; I can no longer be still"

    Thx

  • One of the greatest line in a pop song ever!

  • This song is so moving. These may be the greatest lyrics ever written in music delivered as only Kristen can. Frighteningly good. It just tears me apart. And I have to sat it...only a woman could write a song like this.

  • Agree....though not a woman, I hear a "woman's voice" so clearly in this song.

  • One of the TM classics, for sure!

  • you sir are blind

  • wow - just listen to the drums and bass on this track - superb stuff

  • The whole 'Throwing Muses' album is incredable. There are so few singers who can express their feeling to music as Kristen did.

  • "How can they kill children... And why do I wanna die"... I cry my eyes out every single time I hear these lines - can't help it... Such a beautiful song !

  • i love this song!!!!!!

  • this is completely amazing. kristin looks so little!

  • Damn. This is a big deal.

KH, in her way (pun intended), was stone punk back in the day. I get this Johnny Rotten vibe from many of her cutting vocalisms and expressions in '80s footage.

    Hard to explain.

  • Holy shit this is amazing. THank you for posting.

  • One of the best 80's/independent songs of all time...Kirsten Hersh's "legacy" for lack of a better term now.

  • love watching the drummer play so hard in this band. saw them a few times. it's from listening to them and the pixies i got into a whole lot of other 4ad bands. too bad i don't follow 4ad as much anymore. just don't know which one stands out nowadays. any recommendations???

  • I was at that Living Room show...CIC building, with the bubble window.

  • Now THAT is a show.

  • OMG - I was there!!!!

I spent the whole night staring at Tanya : )

  • In terms of music, this is as good as it gets. Unsurpassed.

  • Classic mid to late 80's Muses...the toast of Newport RI!!!!

  • This song is simply moving and beautiful.

  • I assume this is the clip that was available on 4AD's mini-site for TM2003 (Garoux des Larmes was also available on that site). Who knows maybe some day a DVD will be released...

  • awseum

  • stunning

  • my favorite TM song. Thank you!

  • do you have the rest of this show?
