As most people in the business and crunching numbers can tell you, the best way to ensure the sale of miniatures is to have a game attached to them.
That's where Illyad failed, I'd say.
On the other hand, their sculptors, painters and art department all got moved to Helldorado when Illyad closed down... Might want to take a look at that line...
The BMC line got the nicer models, with the later RotG models being equally nice (compare to their older dwarves or goblins and you'll see what I mean).
I'd have to say the main problem they faced wasn't the fact that the models weren't nice, it was that their rule system was... errr... substandard (and I'm being nice).
Fond memories. Illyad had actually bought a number of moulds from an older french company that had gone out of business with which they started (they weren't nearly as nice as their later stuff). They had two game lines, Return of the Gods (Retour des Dieux, which had gotten an expansion) and The Black Moon Chronicles (based on a comic strip called "Chroniques de la Lune Noire", which is famous in France).
A quick eBay search shows a lot of Ilyad minis available from Euro sellers, as well as a slew of new models from one of the original sculptors of their minis (Jacques Allexandre Gillois).
My painting is very 40k heavy at the moment but one day I'll get round to painting some other stuff. So thanks for telling us about these great minis.
Friday Afternoon Figures is a great series keep up the good work.
This really begs the question why miniatures? Normally when a comic is successful enough to warren that kind of attention they get normal toys or maybe a cartoon or movie.
I do remember Ilyad, although I never bought any of their stuff. They had a good reputation on places like CMON, especially the angel mini at 12:07. They also had a reputation for being very expensive, although they were thought to be worth the money.
I remember Illyad Games. I bought any and all of their stuff they made back in 2005 and 2006 because they were going out of business. There were still a lot I missed because they sold out and were never remade..
Beautiful series of models..wonder if the sculptor is still working in the industry? Definitely saw some I would want, but not at $30+ a pop...just want to paint them, not worship them :(...thanks for the review...Don't think these will turn up in a garage sale...Jim.
Great review. I'm sure I have seen a few of these beauties around the webs. PLEASE show us one painted! I also want to again recommend Zombiesmith for a future FAF episode. It's a great little company ran by a few Pixar artists here in California. Check em out!

@RothandStudio You'll occasionally find them on eBay, but that's the only source that I know of since they have long since been discontinued.

Yes Erik is right. I own the whole chronicles and they are great. The miniatures are also fantastic. Thanks for sharing.

I know these figures they are part of a French comic book series called Black Moon Chronicles.
Or at least most of them are, don´t know why they closed it down, as the series is still ongoing.
