Maybe the moving strip of metal is moving in the pan because it has a larger potential difference (since the two Aluminum materials each have the same potential). That way there is a potential difference between the moving strip and the pan, but not for the nonmoving strip.

There is a fine black line/string viewable straight out of the tip of the wand at 1:54 (best viability around 1:54 (after 1:54 for 1-2 sec it visibly rises as the wand is lifted up.) I was watching out of interest however that seems suspect. Anyone know what that is?

What they show here is a simple magician stunt, that works due to people's scientific illiteracy: What happens? If you put ANY conductive material on a surface charged to high voltage, then this material gets the same electric charge like the surface. Equal charges however repel due to Coulomb forces. When the material in question is of low weight (e.g. a piece of metal foil) these Coulomb forces can overcome gravitation - hence the piece of metal shows exactly the shown behaviour.

A lot of people prefer no shoes in the house. It's much cleaner and respectful to the home's occupant(s). I saw a show on Discovery a few years back, that tested multiple persons' shoes and what they had put on their flooring/carpet when worn in the home. It's likely got a dielectric (oxide?) coating. Try hard anodizing some aluminum foil and you should see a similar effect. The charges get trapped and distributed along the dielectric, which causes it to levitate - since it's not quite enough charge to completely lift it, it winds up standing on end and spins around.

ordinarly if you turned one of these machines on the pie plate would rattle for a second get charged up then float off the top of the sphere and hit the ground once it was out of the e feild.

The earthed wire at the base hangs just under the bottom roller but doesn't touch it..

How it works is that the spinning piece of metal is charged the same as the dome and the pie plate. like charges repel each other the spinning metal is trying to escape from the pie plate but the feild is too weak so it just stands up straight and wobbles, the electrons are trying to get as far away from the pie plate as they can so the tiny piece of metal stands up.
