The metro in Taipei is just great: clean, efficient and always on time. The passengers are great, too: polite and orderly. I was totally impressed with the metro.
i've never been to Tokyo, so i don't have first-hand info about its subway system.
but i've been to Taipei many times, the last time in late May, 2009. i took the metro a lot while i was there. it's an excellent public transportation system.
feel free to take the metro while you are in Taipei. i highly recommend it.
