  • I recall that when I was very young, Nanyin music used to be played on Rediffusion around midnight on certain evenings. The programme was called "Nam Yim Gim Kiok", I think. At that late hour, in very quiet rural surroundings, the music did take on a certain ethereal quality which made it sound so beautifully melancholic, soothing and calm-inducing.

  • @TeochewPhoenix I do not recall the nanyin hour on late night Rediffusion; but perhaps thats because I do not stay up late. Rediffusion was such a joy - it was the sound of my childhood; and more then anything else, introduced a whole generation of us to classical Chinese performance art culture...Teochew, Hokkien, Cantonese opera. And huayue - classical Chinese music. We were such a high-art society then.

  • I wanted to attend the performance, but have been very busy with work. So glad you were there and made this recording. Thank you for sharing! Nanyin is indeed very exquisite and refined....lovely!

  • @TeochewPhoenix A pity you missed it. Like all classical performance art forms, nothing beats watching/hearing it 'live'.

There was a small audience of about 200 (surpringly mostly men ! ), who stayed for the whole 2-hour performance each night.

  • Thank you for sharing it is very nice and relaxing

  • @skubdeliou Glad that you enjoyed it.
