  • is it good for playing acdc crunch tone

  • @BMXBOBO Course it is! Any of the Marshall's can be set for crunch; the JTM45 (UK Blues) is very authentic - try it on its own or why not experiment with a bit of either tube or Fat OD. Use the EQ to emphasis the highs & mids, and tame the bass.

  • I didn't hear the difference really. Can you try changing the setting a few times next time? Thank you

  • @edisongla55 If you play it at the section without the EQ & then move the cursor to with EQ, you'll hear the difference. But there's also another vid on my you-tube channel where I switched it by foot control to make the difference clearer, so you might want to check that one out. It's under " Vox Valvetronix AD120VTX plus stomp EQ (US High Gain) "

  • @TheSuperDead Absolutely - tone is very personal.

  • hello vox, maybe you can help me as well. i purchased a new ad100vt-xl looking to do some fuzzy art punk stuff (no metal, go figure!). anyway, in your best estimation, how would you configure these pedals in a) the fx loop , and b) in the regular effects chain:

mxr eq, boss ns-2 (noise suppression), death by audio robot, boss dd-6, ehx holy stain (for fuzz), ehx big muff pi tone wicker, digitech synth wah, and yes even an alesis bitrman on guitar (wicked sounds). thanks for your help

  • @mastertrev Time based pedals (eg chorus, delays) are best in the FX loop. Everything else in front.

  • I have a Fender Superchamp XD. This amp does not have a midrange control...just a bass and treble. To bring out the mid in the amp you have to lower the treble and the bass which looses signal. Would one of these eq pedals help me achieve more midrange without the signal loss?

  • @jbstorck An EQ often works best in an FX loop but it should still give you some good additional control over your mids even if you don't have an FX loop & use it direct. You don't have to spend a fortune - the Behringer EQ700 I use in the FX loop of my AD120VTX was only about £20 & it does the same job as a Boss GE7 (although these are built like tanks!).

  • @Voxman5 how good is it compared to the boss ge 7?

  • @amazingaustin13 Physically, the Boss pedals are built like tanks whereas the casing of the EQ700 is tough plastic rather than metal, and the sliders have less 'resistance' than in the Boss & feel cheaper. But then the EQ700 is less than a 1/3rd of the price of the GE7. The EQ700 LED is brighter, and the DC mains input is at the side whereas the Boss GE7's is at the end. Physicalities aside, it sounds exactly the same - if anything, I find the EQ700 slightly quieter than the GE7 .

  • IS THIS AMP GOOD FOR METAL?!?!?!?!? LIKE TRIVIUM STUFF, i mean cause i want a extremely versatile amp thinking of getting this. cause i play stuff like Hendrix, to Megadeth or whatever just asking peace out.

  • Hi gatler05 - the 'Blue' series Valvetronix AD60/120VT/VTX/VTH amps are discontinued so you'll have to find one secondhand. But judge for yourself. Do a you-tube search for 'Insurrection - guitarcover' by TheKakaN. I'd post the link but for some reason you-tube won't let me.

  • Thanks alot man, will do.

    You have a nice day

    -Robert

  • well they did make a line of vavetronix amps for metal players but i think its discontinued. the new VT models are actually quite good for metal

  • Yea the AD50VT2 is a great vox for metal, found it for 200 with a footswitch,

  • Nice bargin!!

  • Thank you ! (my guitars are a Strat with custom 68 pickups and a les paul with seth lover humbuckers) Thanks !

  • I there, Maybe you can give me some advice. I need to put together a rig and have 2 options. 1) Get a Crate V33h head , 33 watt all tube class A (el84s) and hook my PODxt in the effect loop, paired with my 2x12 cab. 2) Buy all the electronics/amp out of a vox ad120vtx combo which I can get for the same price as the crate head, pair it with my 2x12 cab (Avatar with heminence legends 150w each) and get rid of the PODxt. What would you consider best ??

  • IMHO Line 6 gear is too digital. It has bells & whistles but lacks tube tone. I use an EQ, BBE Sonic Stomp, & Marshall *Bluesbreaker II in the effects loop via a mono Y cable (see FAQ on forum for details) & it transforms the amp. (*set to boost for lead boosts). Less is more - all you need is in the V'x. Concentrate on what's there & you'll improve your playing. With the Class A route (perfectly valid) I'd go Tonelab LE - way superior tone to PodXT. Re. Speakers - already replied elsewhere.

  • Thanks for the advice !! Cheers

  • love the gibson alot

  • Yup, me too - it's a lovely guitar & I've always liked tobacco sunburst. But it's a bit of a heavy beast & after a couple of hours playing, you feel it! But then, nothing else sounds like a Les Paul. Thanks for looking in.

  • yeah the tabaco sunburst is one of my most loved finishes ...yeah its heavey i know ive played my buddys 68 les paul custom reissue

  • hi voxman i hav a vox ad30vt played with a vintage sg with wilkinson pickups just had it set up new strings, etc but my valvetronix really is,nt getting any good tones!! i used to hav it set up on the floor but raised it up about 2ft with i slight improvement, can u help mate ive spent countless hours messing about with eq but still no good. please help!!

  • I suggest you pop into the forum - ADxxVT section, to chat, as I need more info, others may be able to help too, and youtube isn't really a discussion forum.

  • I want this pedal. I use a Line 6 Spider IV 75 watt. Would it be good to shape the amps distortion?

  • Damn Voxman, I love your playing style!. Thanks for the help, i am going to buy the EQ tomorrow.. Cheers from Arg.

  • Thanks Rodrigo - if you have the stereo AD120VT/VTX/VTH you'll need a mono Y cable if you're using a mono EQ as otherwise you'll only get the effect through one channel (see the FAQ section on the forum for details & explanation). You don't need this with the mono AD60's.

You don't say what amp you have, but if its a 'chrome' Valvetronix amp with no FX loop, an EQ at the front end is NOT the same, & won't help you much. The EQ has to go in the FX loop to gett the effect demo'd. Rich

  • Hey me again, I just saw the video, great cover by the way, I can't tell exactly what it sounds like through the video camera but would It give a nice smooth tone, with bright high notes? i am not so much into the blues sound, are there other stations that aren't so bluesy on there?

  • Hi gnrdude52, glad you liked the cover. Yup, you can get some great smooth cleans with bright high notes. The Fender 'Blackface' 2x12 model is excellent, & mixed with a little compressor, a touch of spring reverb and a little delay, you'll get some gorgeous tones. Ditto with the Boutique Clean. Rich

  • Ok thanks Rich, that helps me out a lot!!!!111

  • Hi yeah I was thinking of getting a vox ad120vtx but I can't seem to find any videos showing their clean station. Is it good for more coldplay type music?

  • Cleans are very good, especially with an EQ in the FX loop - have you checked out my live 'Josie' video or my 'Little Wing' intro?

    Rich

  • No but I will go check them out

  • thx man - you've convinced me to buy this pedal :)

    cheers!

  • Hi Maario - not sure which Valvetronix you have, but just to reiterate, you need an FX loop, - & if you have a stereo AD120VT/VTX/VTH you'll need a Y cable if you use a mono EQ (see forum for details).

  • is the valvetronix-blue a tube+modeling amp, like the VT series? i really need to know because i'm thinking of getting one

  • Yes, designed as gigging amps, the 'Blues' are the original full-featured modelling-valve hybrid. AD120's are stereo. All blues are compatible with the VC12 floor controller. Features include 32 fully programmable pre-sets, 16 amp models, dedicated modulation (5 types), reverb (3 types) delay sections (3 types), pedal section (10 effects), chromatic tuner, hi & lo inputs, presence level, fx loop, direct-outs, extn cab out, headphone out. VTX has closed back with Celestion 'Neodog' speakers.

  • thank you voxman! you've been a big help!

  • Hey rich, do you think having a 10 band EQ would be any more effective than the 7 band?

  • Depends on the pedal. I tried a Boss EQ-20 10-band which was digital & sucked the tone out! But an MXR M-108 is analogue & would give more range, & a gain boost. But its £100+ new - that's over 5 times what I paid for my EQ700. I doubt the tonal variance would justify the difference. Much better IMHO to use the money for a BBE Sonic Stomp Maximiser next to the EQ in the FX loop to clarify tone even more & add a bigger, fuller more 3D type feel that together with the EQ makes the amp sound huge.

  • BTW - I now use a BBE Sonic Stomp Maximiser after my EQ700 in the FX loop. Each does something the other can't - the BBESS improvement is less 'in your face' than the EQ but IMHO it's worth it - together they're brilliant!

  • Hey, nice playing, i have a Vox AD50VT-XL , and i play a lot of metal. ive just bought an MXR 6 band EQ but i cant tell too much difference when i change the settings. I was just wondering if an effects loop mod would help me further sculpt my tone?

  • An EQ in front doesn't do much. As I've explained, the EQ MUST be in the FX loop. A good amp tech should be able to add an FX loop. On Valvetronix . net there's an FX loop mod in the download section for the AD30VT - it should be pretty much the same for all other ADxxVT variants inc. the XL's (which are the same amps except for the modelling). An EQ in the FX loop makes a STAGGERING difference!

  • ok il have a look, thanks :)

  • Hi mate! Really nice review. I used AD50VT and AD30VT before. They were great amps. My friend do you recommend EQ700. How does it compare to GE-7. Is it a good and cheap alternative?

  • Hi grunger&r - I use the Behringer EQ700 with my AD100VTX & it does the same job albeit the case is tough plastic rather than the bomb proof metal case of the GE-7. Does me fine. BUT forget it with an AD50VT/AD30VT as they have no FX loop and an EQ only makes the difference I've shown via an FX loop. It's not the same 'direct'. Rich

  • Typo - I meant AD120VTX!!

  • Brilliant video voxman... I'm looking at a Vt100 at the moment... will an external EQ be as effective for it?

  • Thanks vjohn - I'm told the VT100 is darker sounding & needs an EQ in the FX loop, so the short answer is probably 'yes'. Rich

  • Cant get on valvetronix web sit name/password probs

On the Vt 50 since there is no fx loop have u tried a wah or anyother FX n front? Matching ext cab avail? how do u get around only 8 user presets?..... TJS

  • Bill, send me a PM here with your e-mail and I'll try & sort out your access problem. I did put a Vox Satchurator in front of the VT30 which worked well with the amp. 8 pre-sets in the VT's are a big improvement from only 2 in the ADxxVT's, but my rig is the full featured AD120VTX -32 pre-sets, independent reverb, delay, modulation sections, and an internal pedal section. The only 'effects' I use are a Behringer EQ700 EQ and BBE Sonic Stomp Maximiser in the FX loop.

  • What is the EQ device used?

Thank you i advance for any reply

  • Billrocks - just a little 7-band Behringer EQ700, with a Y cable as my AD120VTX has a stereo fx loop. See Valvetronix . net for details (in FAQ section) of connection & reasons for Y cable in the 120's. Rich

  • thank you very much. i have not had my AD50VT that long, last night i spend half my time trying to lift the tone, it sounded muddy to me. now i know how to fix it. great demo!

  • Hi SW3210 - pop into the forum and have a read of the 'maintenance' thread in the FAQ section - clean all your jack sockets with electrical switch cleaner (the V'x sockets get oxidised) and (if necessary) do an amp re-set. Dirty jack sockets are the biggest cause of 'fading tone' in these amps. Rich

  • thanks Rich, yes I had heard about the oxidisation from a friend.. I might even upgrade those sockets. I have one comment, I have the AD50VT, so I am able to place the EQ in the effects loop? (as you are saying) am thinking no. I might need to mod the amp? great amp though.

  • SW3210 - unfortunately no - the AD50VT has no FX loop although there is a modification available on the forum to modify your amp & put one in. I'm afraid that an EQ in front of the amp (guitar>EQ>amp) doesn't do the same thing. Rich

  • thanks Rich, i will look into the modification, and indeed the forum post. thanks again, you have been a great help.

  • Hey Rich, I wanted to ask you and anyone else who can help-

I have had the AD120VTX for about 4 years, love it, best amp I've had, but 2 weeks ago, I plugged it in, and only one speaker was working. Checked the connections, they are o k and switched the speaker cables around, to no avail. Both speakers work fine, but no output comong from the red and black wire channel.Any ideas what's wrong, or have any of you out there experienced this problem?

    Thanks, Kelly Mac Jax., Florida

  • Thanks for the great demo - The Valvetronix series amps are terrific value, and few simple add-ons do make a difference.

    Cheers

  • Do you think Behringer pedals would break easily since there plastic?

  • The Behringer EQ700 is still pretty tough, even though its casing is plastic, but I leave my EQ on all the time anyway, so it doesn't get 'stomped' anyway. Rich

  • Hey Voxman,

You do a great job on the valvetronix site. I use your "Who;s Plexi" preset alot. I used to have a Marshall 50 Watt Plexi, and you have nailed that tone.

You really should do these videos in a giant Cat costume to capture the essence of your avatar. Now that, would be kewl.

Anyway, love your playing, love your tone and I love my AD120VTX. I've had it almost 4 years now, and I'm still learning it's possibilities.

  • Hi Korky - many thanks for the very kind comments & I'm glad you're enjoying your AD120VTX. Think I'll have to pass on the cat costume though! lol Best, Rich

  • Voxman5, after your clips, I went and spent the $30. WELL WORTH IT MY FRIEND. I just need to figure out how to adjust everything!!

  • I'm telling you if you have a valvetronix you have to use an eq, its like having another amp. You can warm up blues, or get a great hi gain metal sound. I just bought a cheap behringer pedal, and I'm actually going to buy a couple more for changing eq's on the fly

  • Sounds really good. How does it handle sustained pinch harmonics with out the Eq on say Uk 80's with the gain most of the way up? This would really help with which valvetronix I should buy. The regular or XL model. Thanks

  • love it. gonna get one next time i go to town. whats the riff you are playing

  • Dunno, I was just messin' around - came straight from my head.

  • Hi Rich!

Great video and brilliant tone! I have tried applying an eq in my podxtl thru the oop of my avt50 but i'm not sure how to set the level of the pod..pls help...cheers

  • Hi SS. You need an external EQ that you can easily control, not the EQ in your Pod. Also, the parallel FX loop in your Marshall doesn't 'like' MFX units. I know because I also have a Marshall Valvestate 8080 MkI, and had disappointing results with the Boss GT3/6 units. I use a Boss GE-7 EQ (in my BCB60 pedalboard) at the front end for my Laney & Marshall, which works very well. Try a dedicated stomp EQ in the loop & at the front end to see which works best for you. Cheers, Rich

  • cheers mate..will try that...KEEP ON ROCKIN!

  • Rich,

It's good to see your face. You are a guru in my book. Thank you so much for your dedication to the valvetronix website and all your valued research and input, your work and contributions are extraordinary. Cheers, Joe, USA Vox ad60vth owner

  • Hi Joe - that's very kind & I'm glad the site's been helpful to you. And thanks for looking in here too! Best, Rich

  • I second that. To us VT owners, Rich is like a Biblical prophet. "Do the following simple step and your amp will sound 10 times better. There ya go."

In fact, Rich's FX mod+stomp EQ combo was a big selling point for the AD30VT-XL, which cost me $300 and (once modded) enabled me to produce a ripping metal tone I'd have GLADLY forked out a grand for. Thanks Rich!

  • Rightyo then, wheres my soldering iron ?

  • Holy crap that was an amazing improvement. Got to get me a eg for my valvetronix

  • Yes Rich, it really does make a difference judging by the sample you showing here! Again, great tone and playing!

  • Yes Rich, it really does make a difference judging by the sample you showing here! Againg, great tone and playing!

  • Really brought the Valvetronix to life ! Thanks Rich
