I was born in Oklahoma, moved to Australia when I was 1, moved to Colorado when I was 4, moved to China when I was 7, moved to Bangkok when I was 10, moved to West Texas when I was 12, moved to Colorado when I was 17, and moved to Houston when I was 19. I'm 21 now.
I can't relate to anybody, not even TCKs (I guess because I moved to Midland, Texas when I was 12, it's a horrible place for people like me). I resent my parents, not for the moving, but because they didn't support me.
@Nyder I can't even function properly in society. I get by on crime, I'm constantly outcasted. I have no relevant foundation. All I have is some dream-like memory of this international haven that housed superior academia, a more refined culture, etc.
TCKs are not necessarily privileged. My dad wasn't some progressive mind exploring what the world had to offer. He was a sociopathic miser who sacrificed his family for his career. I was constantly shining as a student even at ISB. Where am I now?
And there is only 1 type of TCK. Choosing to settle or to move around is a choice that TCK makes. Sorry, don't mean to start an argument.
I'm an American. I was born in the US, moved to Taiwan (1 yr), Saudi Arabia (7 years in all), and France (3 years). I technically lived in Dubai 3 months. I've bounced between cities and countries a lot; the places I've lived is just the general time I've been there, not listing the amount of jumps.
I'm kind of like this except not international. A lot of people identify with a particular state. I've been in Texas for 10 years now. Texans really see themselves Texans first then Americans. People ask me where I"m from, what state, and all I can say is that I'm American. I was an army brat born in OH (3 months). Lived in OH, IL, NH (2x), MA, MD, TX, OK, MO, IN, KY and back to TX. My accent is generic American expect when I'm tired/stressed. Then I sound like I'm from Boston. lol
@ScaperSteph The other day I was at the mall with my parents/daughter. I was driving around looking for a space. I was getting frustrated and out of the blue I'm like "OHhh, I'm going to Paaak the cAAAR somewhar in this gaarage!!!!" My mom's like where'd that come from? lol I spent the most time in NH and MA.
Hey, this sounds very familiar! I have an American dad and a Russian mom. Born in Scotland. Lived in Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, the US and England.
I know exactly what you mean. I'm "English" but I was born in Brunei. Then I moved to Singapore where I grew up, then I moved to Scotland and then to Malaysia and now I'm in the USA. Plus, most of my friends are Australians because I used to study at AIS in Singapore. It's a real conundrum. O_o
What she said is true, there are two types of TCKs: one continues to live this lifestyle, and the had enough and wants to settle and never move again!
I'm a man without a country...I am a TCK
