Your imitation owl calls are REALLY bad, but this guy responded anyway! Good for you!! I call Barred Owls in up at my cottage on summer nights. It's so cool.
I grew up in the suburbs of Connecticut and there was a mated pair that nested across the street from me growing up. You could hear them at night. Sometimes they wouldn't shut up. I think they're cool to have around but I swear to god some nights when you needed the window open when your mom wont turn on the bloody ac like a normal person and fucking loud as shit owls won't let you sleep so you get swamp ass with the window closed all night. Fucking owls. ........I loved them though srsly.
WOW WOW WOW! How fortunate you are to have him stay around w/ the light. Most owls are spooked by light. You can see how he reacted to your call, even though it wasn't the same species. Beautiful video of such an awesome bird!
@slapurmommaz actually I guess they like lights. I put up some lights last summer outside and suddenly I was hearing owls all night long, had the house surrounded and they were calling to each other.
holy crap. we get these alot in ohio i hear them at night and i knew it was an owl but not sure what kind... but THAT call is the exact one im used to hearing...freaking awesome
That was a big one...I can't believe you just you let it go. At that range one shot with a .22 would have bagged you a very nice dinner. I love owl meat.
@kazeet456 idK! what city you are from but here in america it is illegal!to shoot barred owl's they are currently going instinct . u must live in some other country because here owl shooting is all illiegal
I'll point out that eating chickens, ducks, and turkeys doesn't seem to be a problem. What's the difference(other than owl tastes a little gamier, of course)?
Such a beautiful sound....I'll never forget the first time I ever heard one of these gorgeous birds. Would'ja believe it was in Hollywood? Yup, despite living in such an overurbanized area, critters have managed to carve their own niche...coyotes, squirrels, rabbits, skunks, possums, deer, red tailed hawks as well as owls ...if you know where to look you can see 'em living right under our noses. An owl used to perch in the palm tree outside my window, hooting like mad at round 2AM..so cool!
I had a baby barred owl visiting me every day! He/she? would sit on my fence in the afternoon. I'd leave a small piece of raw chicken out for the owl, and he/she would gladly eat it! One day the owl didn't come. I'm sure he found himself another owl and they have a bunch of baby owls now. I will always remember that little owl.
Barred owls aren't really bothered by lights. We had a couple at my parent's house in VA, and they would sometimes be out as early as 6 PM during the summer, in broad daylight. They tolerate people and noises much better than other owls, too.
go doctor doolittle...it's obvious there is a slight dialect difference but i think it was a productive conversation overall. Im in the middle of negotiations with the Robins and Swifts out here regarding eating more grasshoppers out of my garden. so far so good except they want me to get rid of my cats...
Cool video! I can remember a time a friend and I were walking a trail in a city park at around 9pm. There had to have been around 20 owls all calling throughout the park. It was cool and creepy at the same time. The most I've ever heard at one time.
Was that you calling that he was responding to? You didn't specify and then you did ask him to fly for you! They do not really mind light. I made the mistake of singing to a mockingbird outside my apt. every few years he comes back and sings me 'love songs' all frigin night! This year when he started I heard a crow screaming at him and I asked the crow if he could chase him off or at least ask him to be quiet- haven't heard the mockingbird much since. Birds are smart and so Cool! thanks
@nadadreamer OMG! I was about to say, " He's saying, "if youre going to shine that in my face and ruin my nights hunt ... make me a burger or something would you?"
They look like a giant batman flying at night. They're friggen huge, and they're not shy about buzzing you. There are a few around my appartment here in Central Arizona.
One time I was taking a flight out of Sky Harbor airport at around 11 at night. As we were taking off, the plane was struck by one on the co-pilot's window. We took off, but had to turn back and land to clean it off. HUGE mess. Thankfully it didn't hit the engine.
A while back I was camping with a group of friends, we were drumming around the campfire and an owl came and landed in a tree just above our heads. Within a minute or so he was literally hooting in time with the drums. He ended up hanging around for a couple of hours; it was a cool experience.
@shoelessjohn shining a bright light into an owl's face will not effect its vision in the slightest as their pupil's have a wide range of adjustments to allow just the right amount of light to strike the retina. Many owls are able to see better than human in brighter lights. If it felt threatened or impaired in any way by the bright light it would have flown away.
