  • Over ninety-five percent of the body's serotonin is found in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, which has been called the body's "second brain"1 because of its role in serotonin production and so many of the body's vital functions. In fact, serotonin levels have been linked to everything from autism to constipation.

  • Thanks Josh. This is very interesting and after speaking with a nutritionist she mentioned serotonin and I am positive that my gut problems and anxiety are connected. My doctor has prescribed me Sertraline Arrow and I took half a tablet today and I haven't had any stomach paintoday but it made me feel so yucky (tired, dry mouth, unmotivated, spaced out, headachy - just completely yuck) so I won't be taking any more of that. I need a natural remedy.

  • Leonardo was the smartest person who ever lived, and he explain how the body is a mirror representation of the universe, that includes also its extreme complexity. The human body is final tuned after millions of years of evolution. The cells in your body extremely intelligent and our DNA is way more complex that our current understanding. And Ph.D educated doctors and psychiatrist are in comparison with this gods.. L O L.

  • Hi. How this 95 price of setotonin gets to central nervous system? Is this only 5-htp which is produced in intestinum to cross bbb? Thank You. Ps does coeliakia could make ce cells unable to produce 5-htp?

  • Thanks for the Ref. I'll have a look when I get some time at hands.

  • Very informative thank you!

  • What are the sources you use to draw a conclusion that 5HT produced by EC actually reaches brain synapses. I would argue that 5HT from the gut ganglia serves as transmitter in the afferent neuron of the spinal cord, but the molecule itself does not reach the brain; maybe only small quantities through the bloodstream.

BTW serotonin precursors are found in bananas and honey for example. You need much less serotonin to move 1 oz honey or banana, than 1 oz turkey through your gut.

  • @Rossiana71

The work of pottenger, selye, gyorgi, robinson, weatherby, etc, etc....pretty much any physiology book that is out there written prior to the 80's

  • feedback please....each time i weened off zoloft i have experienced a scary severe depressive episode and then go back-struggled with depression since puberty...it doesnt seem that anyone really understands serotonin or related matters, just interesting speculation...would like josh to discuss

  • @nelbragg

PACK ON BANANAS AND HONEY! GET ENOUGH SLEEP, UNWIND, RELAX, ACCEPT YOURSELF. EAT FRUITS AND VEGGIES. AVOID PROCESSED FOODS AND MAKE YOUR FAT INTAKE LESS THAN 10%. GET OMEGA-3. GOOD LUCK!

  • @nelbragg due to how SSRI drugs (like zoloft) raise and/or maintain the serotonin levels in the synapses, you get an increase in your brain of more active receptor sites for serotonin. When you stop taking these drugs, you have less serotonin going across the synapse, you're left with more receptor sites than before. So ultimately you get that depression after "weening off" because you're withdrawing from the drug and your neurons have to adapt behaviorally to the absence of the SSRI.

  • @nelbragg Just because you get that depression after weening off of your zoloft doesn't mean that your brain is or was low on serotonin. Depression is much more than low serotonin.

What needs to be asked is:

What came first-- low serotonin and depression OR stress, poor habits, and distorted thinking. Modern medicine wants you to believe the former because it supports their business and profitability. People also wanna believe the former because it takes the blame away from them.

  • obi because tryptafan is a precursor to serotonin

  • Why do psychiatrists believe that serotonin is produced in the brain? Simple...

Psychiatrists go to med schools that indoctrinate them with pseudo-science taught by professors and textbooks (written by so called scientists and authorities) who have financial shares with large pharmaceutical companies that make SSRI and other psychotrophic drugs... all so that those psychiatrists in training will one day be apt to prescribe the meds that those companies make.

Yup!! And this is not a conspiracy!

  • @ratiocinativeness

beware of half-truths. Serotonin IS produced in the brain as well.

  • @Rossiana71 yeah and the assumption that that the brain in depressed people is low serotonin is just that... an assumption... it's the "(low) Serotonin THEORY". Even if 5-10% of the body's serotonin is produced in the brain, that doesn't mean that depression is due to a lack of that. Oh and btw, the low serotonin theory is collapsing.

  • like everytime before I eat something i know will fuck me up i get a rumble and know i shouldn't eat it

  • sounds like more BS to meh

  • Thanks Josh, Cud u plz help with Fibromyalgia? If pos, and u can spare the time....plz inbox at my Channel.Indebted !

  • So i popped tremedol n smoked a blunt... dope

  • Great video! I think it was just a slip, but 5-HT is serotonin released from the EC cells, not 5-HTP.

  • its more believable than the rubbish the drug companies say........

  • I can testify to that sir, I think I am ssri sensitive cause only taking celexa for 3 days my stomach and abdomen was on fire and I was in so much pain I was told by my doc to tough it out!! I stop after the 3rd day. this was back in march 2010.

  • I'm not buying it. If Serotonin is a mood enhancer produced mainly in the digestive system then why do so many people today eat themselves into obesity yet have no self esteem? Why are so many people afflicted with Body Dismorphic Disorder and eat nothing at all? It destroys the very fabric of this this video.

  • @JonathonTheAsshole

You don't have to buy into it..it is just how the body works. If you don't understand the body, of course you will not understand this. Just like if you listen to classical music and truely don't understand it, the composer, you will not appreciate the music. Thanks for watching though!

  • @joshrubineastwest Josh, don't think you're more intelligent than the person you replied to. First of all, you've gotten the cute little nickname for the enteric nervous system backwards. It's the "Brain in the Gut."

  • @JonathonTheAsshole HHMmmm so My Gastrointestinal Federal Dr. is lying I guess he doesn't know what hes talking about in fact most of my Veteran Hospital Dr.'s explained the exact same thing this vid said.....But what do they know They are only Dr.'s right......hmmmmm some people are just hard headed.....I guess the Earths square too right ........Great job Josh ;)

  • @JonathonTheAsshole rofl you really are in ass hole. Your logic is like saying the earth seems flat to my dumb ass, so it has to be! Use some evidence or thought next time

  • @JonathonTheAsshole most obese people eat shitty food, either mcdonalds, fried, greased foods, an ambundance of sugar with sodas and chocolate, no vegetables, so how the fuck do you expect to be happy when your entire system is going into overload

  • Months ago I was on Citalopram aka celxa just only for 3 days and I had extreme addombinal burning and pain my stomach was on fire and it was just awful. I was on it casue my doc said that my GI issues were related to anxiety and depression I dissagreed but was desperate for relief from my stomach bloating and tightness. I will never try that agian.

  • @fredguy2 A lot of the times bowel problems are not related to psychiatric disorders. There is strong reason to believe that it is just a misunderstood neurological disorder that causes the colon to spasm. Now we know, thanks to Dr. Mark Pimentel that a lot of the cases where IBS was diagnosed (which is a nonsense diagnosis itself), are being cured with a round of xifaxan. I wonder what all of the foolish psychiatrists GI's, and joshy-poo have to say to a patient with such success....

  • Such an interesting subject. I came upon it at ted.com. We kept the reptile, no wonder we kept the worm. The insect and the fish must be hidden in us too. Well... we do have butterflies...

  • great video. lots of good information

  • great vid Josh, thanks man!

  • 5htp did me harm . I did better with l-tryptophan.

  • @dbztiki yes 5htp bypasses the body's natural control mechanism in how much serotonin is produced...L-Tryptophan does not do that

  • Well said! Thanks, Josh.

  • I take 5-htp supplements and has helped. My girlfriend is taking them too.

  • @SexyDragonMaster You should also try l-tryptophan.. And be smart to drop the 5 HTP...... Let your body deside if it needs to preduce more serotonine and work on yourself in the meantime.
