religion divides families, the opposite of what Christmas is supposed to do. Conservatives make technology progress more slowly and people less economically proficient, Christmas is about the middle class spoiling themselves with what little they were able to save, so that they had a nifty little thing that injects a little bit of joy into the entire year. If anyone us anti Christmas it is conservative Christians.
Personally I think youtubers like JF and togetherforpeace are much more sinister and dangerous than the shockofgod types. The latter are trolls looking for a fight, we all know it, so do they. It is a game (albeit a childish one). The JFs & TFPs have the pretence of people wanting to engage in talking & debate - but are only interested in trying to suppress rational thought & sustain their own delusions. Creepy to see JFs indoctrinating his daughter.
Excellent pwnage! But I doubt he'll listen because you used the "f" word (gasp!) and that offends him. And I can hear him telling his daughter (and perhaps to himself) that "you hear all that profanity coming from his mouth my dear? Well that makes his entire answer moot and inconsequential..."
Good analysis. It really bothered me to see JF feeding his daughter the same tired answers masquerading as questions as he is in the habit of "posing" to atheists.
THANK YOU to be honest it gets really frustrating when you reply to people over and over again with the same replies and they just don't want to see them preferring to put fingers in their ears.
"At what point do you start to move on and act like an adult and not a child? Eight second memory. Hey, next year if you want I'll just re-upload this so you can get the same answers again."
Epic finish for an epic video. It's on videos like this that I miss my 5* button.
Well PR you did it again i applaud you in a well explained video i am a Christian as well you know and i agree it HAS BECOME a Commercialized Season .but the thing i still have a problem with is i enjoy saying Merry Christmas i have my Children force feed at school to say Happy Holiday and is Chastised if they say Merry Christmas saying they might offend other Children of different beliefs

Asking your question about Anthony is like asking how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop. No one has the patience to find out because the amount of time it seems it will take feels like an eternity. ;-)
@proportionalresponse Your name says it all, but well said. And I might start celebrating a day in the year with a trip to the cinema, as with kids I don't get to go often now.
Is your python in that tank behind you or do you have another pet? Curious, I have red-eared sliders and noticed it.
Also, good response. People really do take a commercialized event and make it into something sacred.
As for the initial question, I've always wondered why the hell anyone has to say anything at all. Hello and goodbye have always worked just fine for me...
This is a very fine video because it addresses a major theme among the deniers of science. I have spent 9 months trying to educate deniers of human-caused climate change in the Usenet newsgroup alt.climate-change and I have found that *NONE* of them retain the correct answers to the questions they ask for longer than a few hours. They constantly demand the answers to the same questions, daily, and they ignore the correct answers. I have spent hours answering physics questions, and they retain 0.
Wow! One of the best videos I've seen on this subject for a very long time.
I don't think that most Theists understand just how gentle most aTheists are in their conversations with them. People, like jezuzfreek and TogetherforPeace, put on an air of engaging in rational discussion but they'll only go so far. I've seen many aTheists who have taken much time and effort to gently console a Theist that opening their mind will not only NOT send them to Hell but actually will be rewarding. Thanks.
@Gotrilliten I began purposefully typing aTheist rather than atheist about 6 months ago for the following reason. While some people understand the etymology of the word "atheism" very many seem not to understand and, because the word ends in "ism", these people assume that "atheism" is a belief system. They don't understand that it is only the latter two parts of the word that refer to a belief system i.e. "The" god + "ism" belief. Putting the "a" in front just means "not".
If I'm honest, I wouldn't care if someone said merry Christmas or happy holidays (though the whole happy holidays thing is a bit alien to me, don't really hear it in the UK.)
Why should someone get so wound up over a simple arrangement of words which simply wish good tidings upon the receiver?
@MoonHeadJohn Its America, its different here. Its a war on Christmas apparently. No one cares really about how you say it, fundamentalists tend to sensationalize everything, and the media reinforces it. Its weird, lots of propaganda during the cold war, I think it might have something to do with it.
What puzzles me is why so many christians feel the need to turn a simple wish for their well-being ("Happy holidays!") into an attack on their religion.
I really liked this video! I hadn't watched it because the title made it sound boring and unappealing, but when thetruepooka recommended it I figured I would give it a shot.

Great video, Greg. I love Xmas, though we don't usually call it 'Holidays', as those are vacations to us and we do that in the summer. However, the 'holidays' term has started to creep in.
This made me masturbate . . 8sec. . .my whole life
I celebrate Festivus. What is this Christmas thing? It sounds like something out of ancient mythology, and why is this Easter thing determined by a complex mathematical procedure? Didn't This Jesus fellow die on a specific day? Just as he was born on one? Someone should know. Right? So why is the day he died moved around and celebrated? I smell something fishy.
Whenever a Christian asks me why I as an atheist celebrate Christmas, I say "for the same reason that I as an American celebrate Cinqo de Mayo and the same reason why you as a German/Frenchman/whatever celebrate St Patrick's Day with corned beef. Because I like being a part of a community."
Hmmm... I think the answer to "how long does it take JF777 to get something through his head" would require one of Ozmoroid's hyper-detailed super awesome mathematical diagram-y physics-laden laff-gasm style videos.
Hell to the fucking yeah mean, fuckin LOVE Waffle House. That is an AWESOME tradition. I may steal it. Geography of southern US: Church, church, church, house, Pentecostal church, bank, church church church WAFFLE HOUSE church house giant Crucifix house house WAFFLE HOUSE church.
"Organized religion destroys who we are by inhibiting our actions, by inhibiting our decisions out of, ...out of fear of some - some intangible parent figure who, who shakes a finger at us from thousands of years ago and says, and says, "Do it... do it and I'll fuckin' spank you." ~ Loki
Jesusfool is a bit of a half-wit, but he still bears responsibility for raising his kids under the abusive belief that they are born evil and are rightfully destined for eternal damnation unless they believe in his painfully shy jealous wizard in the clouds. He is a good example of the psychological abuse that people of "faith" impose on their children, who often do not live in an insulated bubble as their parents do, but live in the real world where magical belief has no credibility or value.
kind of like people who tell kids the stork story when they ask how babies are made...im not afraid of biology and i dont want my kids to be either....
His daughter thinks people say "happy holidays" to avoid offending atheists? Uh . . . Does he honestly believe she won't eventually discover that there are many different religions which all have their own winter holiday? Is he planning on keeping her confined to the house with no internet access or educational material of any kind for the rest of her life? Because it would require nothing short of that to accomplish such a blinding.
I like the relative age scenario. I use that to explain why time seems to go by quicker as we grow older. Our experience of it is likely as a ratio to our lifetime. Nice work here. Maybe he is a goldfish, and not a lizard, after all.
Well done! I'm mad at myself for missing this when you put it out. JF won't pay attention to a thing you said and you hit the nail right on the head. He's an ignorant closed minded person and he doesn't care what anyone else has to say. I caught him on Stickam one night bashing theamazingAtheist for the banana thing. Then he went on to defend VenomFangX's taking of charity money. To say he's dense is a major understatement.
When I was new to YouTube, I would do some responses to JF. While I never knew the goldfish thing, my impression was basically exactly that and stopped bothering with him.
Thanksgiving was originally supposed to be a day of fasting according too Time Magazine, and the Native Americans made it into a feast. I think it had something to do with Puritanical principles to showing gratitude by giving up food for a day. I think all holidays are pretty much adaptations of earlier events.
Only 470 billion?! Invading Iraq could have been extended another five months on that money! Killing harmless defenseless people should have higher priority over being generous and kind to them.
I'm an Atheist I say merry x-mas to people and celebrate Christmas, I put up a nice big xmas tree and lights every year. It's more of a family/American tradition than religious.
people want to know about the reasons behind holidays. it's like saying that thanks giving is enough of an explanation to why it is an American Holiday. but it is not, people want to know why it is an Holiday. history is not an Holiday.
i think you're wrong, although i accept that people do say happy Holiday's this i believe is a fashion. people want to know why it is a Holiday and the origin of what this Holiday is about. although 25th December has it roots in many religious symbols, people will want to know about them. it will never be "just a Holiday"
yea ppl can celbrate xmas however they want, i agree. but i draw the line when christians say that the origins of xmas is cuz of jesus or say that christmas is all about jesus' birth when it clearly isnt. i would love it if christians would jus celebrate however they want but shu tha fuck up when it comes to the history of xmas
@ProportionalResponse So, what you're saying is that I shouldn't take your Thanksgiving tradition (going to a Waffle house and a movie), hijack it, sprinkle some atheism on it, call it Atheistmas, then get mad at you when you fail to see (thereby offending me) the that the "true" reason for the season is a sprinkle of atheism?
That's an absurdly reasonable notion... one which many in this great nation of ours simply won't understand.
I agree with everything except for the birthplace of flight thing. haha.
You say that the birthplace of flight is North Carolina.
Here's the counterpoint. The Wright Brothers were from Ohio, they developed their theories about flight technology in Ohio, they built the first working plane in Ohio, then they ran their first test flight in a state that had the right weather conditions, North Carolina. Does North Carolina really deserve the credit?
@ProportionalResponse That's not really a refutation or a counterargument. It's just a specification of which city in North Carolina the Wright Brothers chose for their test flight.
CoonAndFriends2 had the "Wright" idea. Did I just "Wright" that? I hate myself. haha
@cornballjapery Who gives a shit about birthplace? You can trace The Wright Brothers back to a German, Dutch, English ethnicity, does that mean it was a collaborative effort between those countries that gave the world flight? No, just like it doesn't matter where they built it, thought it, or any of that shit. All North Carolina has ever claimed (as stamped on their license plates) is "First in Flight". Will you deny that? Can you deny that? No? Then there is no counterpoint to make.
@southmcl Well first of all a lot of people care about birthplace and ethnicity, but that isn't what this is about at all. I never mentioned it. I mentioned where the Wright Brothers lived and worked, which I consider to be more significant than where they took a field trip to. North Carolina essentially claims credit for the invention. Would I deny that? Yeah. Before this goes any further, I must say that I don't actually care about this issue. I have an opinion, but no real emotion.
You met your woman in Ohio, married in Ohio, planned your family in Ohio, made love in Ohio, and when the time was right, your girl gave birth to a beautiful baby in an excellent hospital in North Carolina. What is the birthplace of the baby?
@cornballjapery Let me simplify this, because I get so tired of hearing this argument. Where was the first successful flight? No if's, and's, or but's. Just answer the question. Also, to clarify, not both wright brothers were from Ohio. Wilbur was born somewhere in Indiana, so I guess they were also the birthplace of flight, right?
As an atheist woman, watching this, I think I just got a taste of your stress level. It's not worth it. That was 10 minutes of literal wasting your time trying to explain something to someone who obviously does NOT want to open up his narrow mind. As of his kid, you nore, can I, force upon that man on how to raise his child. It's the same way we atheists can't force our theories, opinions, onto others but hope someone might hear us and something might click in their head.
I suggest you follow your own advice, and follow the money to explain why there is a War on Christmas. Fox News has a mostly conservative viewership, that hates every social change that will make people less religious or less "patriotic" or less capitalistic. The thought of Christians being persecuted by atheists is very appealing to these viewers, and therefore there is a market for media that conveys this message. Ergo, you get the War on Christmas on Fox News.
8:59 Atheists are such a minority it is idiotic for him to assume that--if he actually believed it at all. It is more likely his response was for the benefit of the camera--a chance at a shameless plug for his bronze age beliefs and to put down atheists.
I enjoyed your critique of this moron and his fatuous question.
What a prick. I usually enjoy Greg's vids, but he has been coming off far too bitter and hostile lately. Greg, why the hostility? You seem like a humanitarian oriented person, but how does this demeanor further your cause?
@edelweissnpa Lately? Which vids have I made lately that make me appear bitter and hostile? Lacks of integrity anger me, more so, when coupled with hypocrisy.
I have some latent anger after being lied to for the duration of my childhood; Santa, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, and the Magic Baby born on December 25.
I express my anger at anyone I catch lying to children: Parents, Priests, etc. Especially on 'Holidays'.
I think the question was Jesusfreek's creation, it is clear that his poor daughter is being made to read from a script on the dashboard, only looking at the camera occasionally.
This video was precisely what I've tried to tell EVERYBODY in my life since day 1. I actually choose NOT to celebrate the holiday (to which everybody generally responds "You don't need to be religious to get presents")... but I don't give two shits who does or how they choose to. I don't care that people say "Merry Christmas". The ONLY thing I care about when it comes to the holidays are people who get offended when I DON'T say Merry Christmas... and people who won't let me not celebrate.
@YourDogIsDeadHAHA There was an auto accident not far from me while I was filming. I had to stop a few times when police / ambulances would go by, but yeah, except for that it was in one take. Sadly a woman died in that accident, so in retrospect, it's one of my sadder videos when I think about it. At some point between the start and the end of that video, about 300 yards away, a lady died, and on X-Mas eve (just for the extra uncoolness).
@PurpleGhost We can only hope that she keeps asking questions and maybe one day she'll even be an atheist herself. Sometimes that's what happens when parents force-feed religion to their children. The more the children learn about it the more they realize it all sounds like a load of crap.
this is SO true its spooky. as a theist i noticed the 8 second memories. church was so repetitive i feel now i could have gone ONCE and heard it all.
i understand elderly people who grew up with 1 book in the house which is the bible and entertainment was all night gospel sings. i can understand their mentality
it just sucks seeing humans spend the prime of their lives as heavens real estate salesmen/women
I would say, I was far too nice in my response to jezuzfreek. That's what I get for giving him the benefit of the doubt, as well not doing a background check.
When I watched JF's vid the other day, I was shaking my head saying to myself that the brainwashing on that little girl was well underway. So sad. And cruel.
Wow, you seem really mad (rightfully so) I don't think I've ever seen you genuinely angry at something before. I have seen you go David Silverman meme on someone (are you f'in serious? if you don't know it) but never mad. Merry Christmas, from one atheist to another. :D
@ProportionalResponse I got an iPod touch and a new webcam for Christmas. I donated, and I ate an awesome dinner with my family. Told everyone merry Christmas. I am very atheist, I think religion is evil, and most people are morons. I think religion should be abolished, etc etc. But, doesn't I can't enjoy myself. P.S. this is me just validating what you said. Loved the video man, great job. Oh, and merry Christmas. ;)
I left him a "shove your well wishing up your ass" comment on that video, because I was truly offended that he was using his daughter to further his and other peoples self indoctrination. And as you said he knowingly has his child speaking lies right beside him, and he reinforces it.
I think he is addicted to the attention he gets, to him its all Christian persecution and he loves the feeling of being persecuted for his beliefs. Personally I can't stand the prick.
LMAO on X-mas you upload a video picking on some goldfish christian xD this is hilarious, you really thought about this guy enough to honour him with uploading a video for him at x-mas?
Goldfish don't have an 8 second memory, they've been trained to run through mazes, that's a myth. At least that's what I remember my professor saying when I was in one of my psych courses.
I say Merry Christmas. I also say Happy Hanuka. I also say Happy Saturnalia.

And that was kind of off topic.

One more thing, I spent Thanksgiving with a small group of people...including an American Indian. Talk about irony.

Thanksgiving was originally supposed to be a day of fasting according too Time Magazine, and the Native Americans made it into a feast. I think it had something to do with Puritanical principles to showing gratitude by giving up food for a day. I think all holidays are pretty much adaptations of earlier events.

people want to know about the reasons behind holidays. it's like saying that thanks giving is enough of an explanation to why it is an American Holiday. but it is not, people want to know why it is an Holiday. history is not an Holiday.
aaugoaa 2 months ago
i think you're wrong, although i accept that people do say happy Holiday's this i believe is a fashion. people want to know why it is a Holiday and the origin of what this Holiday is about. although 25th December has it roots in many religious symbols, people will want to know about them. it will never be "just a Holiday"
aaugoaa 2 months ago
People have been saying "happy holidays" since the 1940's at least.
The War on Christmas may have been started by lifelong Catholic Bing Crosby. /watch?v=3k_q_UMI3tQ But not atheists.
This "happy holidays" attack on atheists is same Christian propaganda as those blaming us for Nazism, abortion, feminism, drug addiction, etc.,

Does North Carolina really deserve the credit?
cornballjapery 2 months ago
@cornballjapery None. Only the Wright brothers deserve the credit.

ProportionalResponse 2 months ago
@ProportionalResponse That's not really a refutation or a counterargument. It's just a specification of which city in North Carolina the Wright Brothers chose for their test flight.
CoonAndFriends2 had the "Wright" idea. Did I just "Wright" that? I hate myself. haha

ProportionalResponse 2 months ago
@ProportionalResponse Ahh, it all makes sense now. Thanks, I never would have noticed that.
cornballjapery 2 months ago
@cornballjapery Who gives a shit about birthplace? You can trace The Wright Brothers back to a German, Dutch, English ethnicity, does that mean it was a collaborative effort between those countries that gave the world flight? No, just like it doesn't matter where they built it, thought it, or any of that shit. All North Carolina has ever claimed (as stamped on their license plates) is "First in Flight". Will you deny that? Can you deny that? No? Then there is no counterpoint to make.
southmcl 2 months ago
@southmcl Well first of all a lot of people care about birthplace and ethnicity, but that isn't what this is about at all. I never mentioned it. I mentioned where the Wright Brothers lived and worked, which I consider to be more significant than where they took a field trip to. North Carolina essentially claims credit for the invention. Would I deny that? Yeah. Before this goes any further, I must say that I don't actually care about this issue. I have an opinion, but no real emotion.
cornballjapery 2 months ago
@cornballjapery 4 years is a lengthy field trip but whatever. It's a logo stamped on a license plate, a bit ridiculous that the "issue" even exists.

@cornballjapery
You met your woman in Ohio, married in Ohio, planned your family in Ohio, made love in Ohio, and when the time was right, your girl gave birth to a beautiful baby in an excellent hospital in North Carolina. What is the birthplace of the baby?
;-)
laflugantabastardo 2 months ago

At some point between the start and the end of that video, about 300 yards away, a lady died, and on X-Mas eve (just for the extra uncoolness).

i understand elderly people who grew up with 1 book in the house which is the bible and entertainment was all night gospel sings. i can understand their mentality
it just sucks seeing humans spend the prime of their lives as heavens real estate salesmen/women
