@BillyKnockout in the day, rock and roll was considered nigger music (white term of course). blacks would record a hit, and radio stations/whites didn't like it. then pat boone, ricky nelson, bill haley or the diamonds would cover it then the song would shoot up the white charts. stupid, isn't it? lol
@renascencewoman Yeah...that was pretty much a standard practice . Up until the mid 60's , black artists had crackers ( Black term of course ) adorn their album covers just to make sales .
The Diamonds took their share of blame heaped on white artist of the 50s that made their living the records of black singers. The group only did what they felt was necessary to succeed in a tough business. they didn't invent the cover and didn't record as many covers as many other "pop" artist that found greater success.
i know they sing something else and i couldn't remember whom, but then this rock group came up and i now i remember i heard it on the radio and i think they did a pretty good job, but no one can do it better than frankie lymon and the teenagers can.
Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers are better. I hate that white groups tried to sing like our black men in then what was considered rock -n- roll. That was one reason Little Richard had to start singing faster and faster. So they couldn't be like him.
this is awful.. thier voices are toooooo deep to be youthful...keep up with the rhythm and beat boys. reminds me pat boone doing lil richichard tutifruti
Man look at the real guy who song it frankie lymon he a beast i dont know why they singin his song i mean they can sing but damn can a black person take song credit for their songs
Agree Randomcutz. Frankie was a huge genius. He had a blessed soprano voice before his tone changed from kid to man.
Check Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers original, check their cover to Paul Anka Diana or many other covers (most of them better than the original ones)
The Diamonds is smoother while Lymon puts more emotion in his version. Most negro groups are famous for rythym and unique dancing ability while white groups are smoother with better harmony.
Frankie was never meant to be the lead. The real lead got sick. Unfortunately Frankie had a flat voice with no texture or tremolo. So I can't get interested.
GSilver, what do you mean by flat voice? Maybe he used not tremolo but let me ask how many doo wop lead singers do you know with that soprano range? That really interest me, so I can't get why you are not. Just curious, no disrespect :-)
True ronbos60, but i love a male voice singing in soprano range. If you heard to Frankie's voice when grow up if kinda low pitch if you compare him with his brother Lewis (who still has a good high tenor range). I just enjoy males singing in a high range.
btw SilverWorld, the lead for the teenagers was intended to be Herman Santiago, do you think he had better voice than Frankie? maybe technique but not voice (nobody can compete agaisnt a teen singing soprano imho)
all your comments are so bullshit....this was recorded as a cover version so "white" folks in the 50's can also listed to songs made by black singers and writers....don't forget this are the 50's in America. You can learn all this on lines, instead making stupid comments
wat u mean colord people the white people are the colerd people u wana kno y becasue white people change colors all the time and black people just stay 1 color white people change when ther hot mad or sad or sick people add me
mann dis sum bullshit y come every time a black person make a song white people gotta try n make it there's NOW THATS A BUNCH OV BULL SHIT!!! IT DON'T EVEN SOUND RITE NOW
Its peole like you who give colored people today a bad name, you think that everything that white people do is prejuidice, a white guy gets a job over a black guy, prejuidice, a white guy records a song a black guy recorded, prejuidice, and you people are a bunch of cry babies about everything that we do things in opposite, like OJ, if we would have said guilty it would have been prejuidice right? Wrong! Not prejuidice but justice. John McCain president that would have been prejuidice too ha?
Frankie Lymon sang the song with emotion (even at the tender age of 13). Whilst this cheap version was sung with the motive of making a quick buck by some suburban boys.
It does upset me to see how classic songs such as this have never received the respect that they truly deserve.
I don't mind Frankie Lymon's version, but I think that The Diamonds' version is much better. Dave has a very soulful voice and the vocal and instrumental backing is really well done. My second-favourite version was done by "The Essex" on Roulette records. That is definitely worth a listen.
It's sounds good, but frankie was truely the lead vocalist for this song and had this guy originally sung it, they wouldn't have made it. I mean, his english is still broken after all this time. wow...
Personally, I like Frankie Lymon's version the best. I don't much care for the Diamond's version so I would have to say that Frankie Valli's version is the best out of these two.
Gail Storm album is great and she has been totally forgotten. Check out her songs, and My Little Margie TV show. I was a little kid watching that funny TV show. I got to meet her, what a shock, but I got her to autograph a 45 and she was in shock that I had one.
i think both versions (diamonds4 seasons) suck, i personally like frrankie lymon and the teenagers version much better, think the other two groups over did it, frankie';s version was pure and raw. but thats my opinion, if you like this then i guess thats you.
I think all the early versions including Lymon and Diamonds are boring. You had to do something to the arrangement like FS. Maybe that was Frank Slay or Bob Crewe.
But I wish you guys would stop using that word s---. You might not get published.
I recommend the CD "The Diamonds Collection" on the Stardust label for the best sound and selection. It's available from Continental Records. Also see my profile and visit my music blog for some more Diamonds.
My mom manages the man who wrote the song! JIMMY MERCHANT! :))
