  • as a canadian, i'm proud of all our boys who fought for belgium and france. poor bastards drowning in mud, choking on gas... they shall not grow old, as we who are left grow old. age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. at the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.

  • Belgium will never forget!

  • i think in belgium, were very gratefull to all our soldiers, french, british and american soldiers who fell for our freedom. This is a sign of respect towards the people who lost a friend, a familymember or someone else in every war. But mostly in the worldwars...

  • R.I.P YUGOSLAV ARMY OF THE FATHERLAND. CCCC

    FUCK HITLER AND THE USTASA.

  • I went to Belgium earlier this week and we went to see this ceremony. Something I'm not going to forget as long as I live... very emotional...

  • Watched this on Thursday with school, 3 people from our trip put down a wreath.

  • Sleep in peaceful land with brothers by your side,

Sleep for you are not forgotten you are revered,

Your duty is done and the guns now lie silent,

Sleep for we give thanks to you.

From Menin Gate by Paul Brennan 2010.

  • I played the Last Post at the Menin Gate sometime during my service in the Royal Marines Band and it will forever be in my memories .It is a superb memorial for all those who gave there lives .

  • @bidscfc1 Great post mate. Such an honour for you and I was at Menin gate several times for last post. Great memorial.

  • This is a magnificent tribute to the 55,000 men who lost their lives in the Flanders area during WW1, and who have no known grave.

  • The day will come when another great war is upon us. Let us hope we are able to muster the fighting spirit again. Or we shall be forever enslaved to the enemy.

  • I went with my school around the battlefields etc and I have never felt so upset and emotional in my life there was not one person on the trip who didnt cry I just wish more people could go on these trips and understand what the soldiers done for us and are still doing.

  • Then I hope my country (Belgium) has made it clear to you that we greatly respect what your country (and others) has done for us. We will never forget!

  • it shows in the fantastic way your country looks after the grves of all who fell.

  • @MaartenBE : i believe the belgian people as i respect the sacrefice hose toung men gave for our freedom.

  • @MaartenBE ik leef ook in belgie en we zijn met men klas naar daar geweest en spreek je dialect

  • i whent to menin gate with downend school for a trip. i really liked it as an expireince!

  • May they all be at peace, It's sad most people will never truly understand the sacrifice they made.

    Thank you.

  • I've ben there and actually taken part in the ceremony by marching across the road and laying a wreath on those very steps...it was the most moving and rewarding experience of my life.

  • I took part in this ceremony too, a couple of nights ago carrying a wreath from my school. It was really emotional, and something I will never forget...

  • i was also with my school at the same period you were, we went on a tuesday night i think it was the 21st october it was very emotional

  • i went to belgium/france in febuary as a break with my friend and was amazed by the whole experience standing at tynecot cemetery and then the last post at the meningate just made me so proud to be british

  • have you been to Brandhoek to see the grave of Noel Chavasse, double VC winner. Very humbling. God save the Queen

  • A truly moving experience, and an incredible place. Truly humbling

  • Anyone wanting to be a British Citizen should be made to attend a service at the Menin Gate.

Then, perhaps they might get an idea of the suffring our forefathers endured in order to give them the freedom they enjoy today.

Thanks Blair, for handing it all back. They died for nothing. you are a coward and a pig.

  • 'TinTin' ~ with you 100% on that ~ with a codicile that the 'ASBO' youth of today also be made to attend and then speak to the likes of Harry Patch .

  • AAAA.031522Z AUG 2008 Thank you for posting the video.......AR.

  • I just got back from this was an amazing experience for me.

    R.I.P

    all our war heros

  • If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood

Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,

Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud12

Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,

My friend, you would not tell with such high zest13

To children ardent14 for some desperate glory,

The old Lie; Dulce et Decorum est

Pro patria mori. By Wilfred Owen.

  • I am a descendent of two brothers who served in Flanders, only one survived, and perhaps Owen's graphic description of the real horror, is why he never spoke about it in his long lifetime.

  • may they rest in peace

  • I went here last August and it was such an amazing town.

    I loved it.

  • Rest in peace all those who protected us and gave their life in battle. Lest we forget.

  • Words defy this Ceremony.

The emotions it stirs are beyond words.

  • Very moving...

  • I agree.

I've got tears in my eyes now in fact.

  • iam always upset when when ever we visit YPRES

the old doll is laying a wreath for the ROYAL EHGINEERS & THE WAR WIDOWS OF GB & FOR MY FATHER "SAPPER" STAN HERSCHEL TAKEN P.O.W. ARAS FRANCE JUNE 1940 5 YEARS IN STALG 8B LAMSDORF POLAND .

    GOTT MIT UNS

  • ive taken part in two parades through the Menin gate and through the town of Ypres with the british army, its fantastic to be able to be a part of it!!

  • I apologise , without reservation , to the good people of that town for incorrectly spelling the name of their town.

Thankyou Tim for educating me .

  • Thankyou to the citizens of Leper for keeping this act of remembrance constantly at the forefront of our minds .

    'We will remember them'

  • It's 'Ieper', not 'Leper'

    We will remember them.

  • Its not Ypres either.

  • I went there yesterday. Lol.

  • i went to a ceramony like this with my school and it was just amazing so emotional we had a bagpiper there and it was so emotional

  • i got to sing there a couple of days ago with the pendle youth choir i fet so good i felt i did something fot the the people affected in this

  • I had the privledge of reading the passage at the ceremony in March '07 and it was one of the most moving experiences of my life.

    We will remember them.

  • Very moving. Lest we forget.

Deep respect from a Belgian soldier.

  • I'm just back from Ypres, beautifull place the last post ceremony is amazing how they've kept it up, whoever you are Ypres will touch a nerve.

  • I went around some of the wargraves in Ypres last year and i have to say that it was a very emotional experience. I went to menim gat two night as it was so busy with tourists. It is very touching that they have done this every night at 8pm since the end of the 1st world war. Lets just hope the ext generation keep it up.

  • I carried the standard for my ATC squadron (339 south dartmoor) under the gate in the parade. It was such an honour. Even now when I hear the last post it raises the hairs on the back of my neck

  • im from ypres and i love my town. and i love to read all those nice and respectful things here in the comments. but it sometimes makes me sick that youngsters from ypres dont show any respect anymore for all that has happened here almost 100years ago..and thats just because they practicly dont know anything about it no more. sadly it lives more with the youth out of ypres then in ypres

  • Kito, its not just your youth, british youths are just the same im afraid. I have been going to Ypres for the last 14 years with my Fire Brigade Colour Party, each and every time the hairs on my neck stand up, and the tears roll down my face when the poppies fall from the roof of the great gate !, It is a special special feeling to be involved in something emotionally draining, but proud. Ypres is truly a beautiful town. To understand these words you need to be there on 11/11 at 11am !.

  • I went there on saturday night. its amazing how every night they do it, and with a full house. thats commitment and respect.

  • that's a really great clip. I was at the last post ceremony last night whilst on a school trip to belgium and none of the graveyards or museums got the message across like the last post ceremony. even the hard folk in the class were crying.

  • Whenever we go to flanders, we always stay for the last post. Out of respect.

  • I agree Ypres is a beautiful place. I went there for a WW1 study trip to the trences and cemeteries. The first night we were there we went to the ceremony. Amazingly there were some spanish students there aswell talking through it all. kind of disrespectful to those who died. Brilliant and memoriable ceremony, im sure anyone who has been would agree.

  • Ive been at that ceremony and we were close to beating some spanish students as they were talking through it it was truelly touching and sad though.also went to flanders fields and the somme.

  • Ypres is such a beautiful place and the last post at the Menin Gate is such a beautiful thing to witness. It's so sad all those names.

I remember it was quite eerie because after they played the last post there was the silence and then there was the church bell ringing in the distance that will always stay with me.

  • Great clip. A little jewel for history buffs and a touching tribute to the hundreds of thousands that perished in Flanders Fields. unfortunately, it ended before the "last post" finished.

  • i agree, i went to ypres on a trip with my school and stayed in a hostel down the road, i fink it was 54,000 unfound bodies of just that battle on the gate.

and if you go to ypres. you must go and see the trenches on hill 62
