I believe Benedict Arnold was an American hero who just made a really bad decision. He was pushed by his Tory wife Peggy Shippen and his ridiculous temper. I'm not making excuses for him but I don't think he deserves the reputation he has. He nearly died fighting for America before the whole treasonous plot. Dark Eagle is a really good book if you want to know Benedict's full story and the things that led up to him betraying America.

Benedict Arnold, while he DID in fact betray America, was without a doubt one of the greatest American generals. Indeed, he may well have been the greatest had he not betrayed America. I think we need to let go of the grudge. Congress, and the other generals, drove him to it, even if it was dishonorable.

I think people should stop bashing on Arnold. Sure he did have some pride issues, but people bashed on him too much. Everyone took his credit at the time for the victory at Saratoga. Congress in desperate need of money, suddenly framed Arnold so they could get money from him even though he spent all his money on the war. I honestly think he made some bad descisons. What would any of you have done in his situation?
