is the second plant called the "sun dew" i have many similar plants in my back yard which is pretty wet year round. it does not have a stem but the leaves just grow out of the ground from one central location. can anyone help me out in finding out which carnivorous plant this is?
Imagine being a bee or something, and telling your friends you almost got killed by a PLANT? That's just embarrassing. Might have to mum, if I was the insect, and lick my wounds. "oh, umm, I got this bruise on my bee leg, cause umm,, I umm...."
I got a ton of these, I love them all. :) My favorite has to be my sundews, I have quite a few of them. Cape Sundews, for example, are really common, but I recently got a Drosera Binata, which have Y shaped leaves, and Drosera dichotoma, which makes huge 3 foot long spiderweb style leaves. :)
I also have some Sarracenias (American Pitcher Plants) that I keep outside. Not sure if they're going to survive, I didn't winterize them enough. My Venus Flytraps died outside, unfortunately.
Well, the Venus fly trap is a very interesting plant, but it's trap is not as complex or interesting as that of bladderworts. Way better but I can't find a video of it occurring anywhere.
Pitcher plants bought in garden centers aren't that expensive. Depending on the size it could cost from what you pay for an African violet to an orchid. If the plant is regularly offered at a store then it's probably not one of the more expensive variety.
You'll also find them being sold at centers with a more specialized section for pond plants. In such cases they usually have a number of varieties to chose from.
I have better luck at specialty pond centers and plant expos.
Yes, pitcher plants (or Sarracenias) "wait" for prey to be attracted by the sweet nectar. The rim is actually quite slippery so they fall in. Once inside, the pitchers are filled with digestive emzymes that breaks down the prey.
If you buy a pitcher plant or venus flytrap or any carnivorous plant, buy it online from a source where you can ensure they are captive bred. Almost all carnivorous plant species are endangered due to collection by humans. There are plenty of sources online where you can buy captive bred and propagated carnivorous plants and you'll also find a wider variety and more interesting selection of cultivars.
that is so cool how that sundew devoured that fly. i am new to carnivourous plants and just recieved a venus fly trap which i love to take care of. if any hobbiyists could give me some tips on growing fly traps it would be greatly appreciated.
Sundews are cool!!! I grow carnivorous plants as a hobby, but most of mine are pitcher plants. I have have two types, the Sarracenia, (American pitcher plant which were the pitcher plants shown) and the Nepenthes which grow primarly in south east asia such as Borneo and Sumalia.

I wish somebody would do an in-depth take on the Waterwheel; like an underwater venus flytrap, for those that don't know.
Those things are intense. They perfectly illustrate the horrors of the deep (or not so deep, in their case)
