I had done the same things as Springsteen.. I kept going back in my mind over and over trying to "fix" things with both my late wife and a sociopathic woman I was involved with after my wife's death ...for years.... and I couldn't understand why I kept doing that... Satan was using both to keep me immobilized... keeping me from moving on.. a very beautiful song about breaking free of the bondages of our past...

Incredible how this man can chirp up the crowd, get em laughing, and then deliver a performance wrought with so much agony and pain. On stage, there are very few that can stand with this guy. Thanks for posting.
Very powerful song. A very beautiful reminder to go to my father's house and ask for atonement for my sins. Forgiveness would be at the top of my list.
ShabbyDog, thanks so much for putting this up! The best version of this song, hands down. Any chance you have video of Darkness from the same show? That is my absolute favorite.
W.O.W. Just....Wow. Bruce Springsteen is without a doubt one of the most amazing artists to ever have walked (and still walks) this earth. I would give all the money I have to hear him perform like this. Stunning.
One of my favourite songs in the whole world. Also, this show's got something special in the atmosphere. Bruce's voice, the 12-string beauty and the harmonica that we all love... everything's perfect.
i first listened to this acoustic version on here and I teared up listening to it because it reminded me of my old home where my father and my family lived. such a beautiful song :)
@Chris51jon it wasnt before bruce made it big, if you listen to those songs he is singing about the uinemployment caused by the Unions that funded Obama, there is your package.
Are you kidding me? Even a "minor" Springsteen song like this is so damn evocative and poetic that it almost makes me want to cry, and certainly makes me want to wake up in the morning.
So I can go back and fix everything that wasn't. However, my family had a bad reputation and I was a kid who just wanted to play sports and change my family. If I could go back, I wouldn't waste most of my life try to change them. However, GOD gave me the next best thing marring into a loving, caring, old fashion family. However, I have to work hard to provide for my family because I couldn't stay focas on school and I had to start providing for myself at 4TH grade.
Thank Bruce for saving me cash and time trying to figure out why I use to drive through the two old nieghborhoods I grewup and look at all my friends' houses and the playgrounds I hungout. Furthermore, I'm a very deep person searching always for answers. Sometimes I want my life to be a Twilight Zone episode.
The description is soo off this is one of the best videos I've ever seen. Maybe not so much visual but the sound and the timing and the way you can see his hair is amazing
Just got the album from my friend who is a Bruce fanatic, really emotional and stripped. Nothing like it, this is my favorite song off it. Reminds me of the Sopranos when Tony dreams. Love it regardless
The first season of The Sopranos featured at least one song from the Nebraska album, can't remember quite what it was, possibly State Trooper, so the link really isn't too far fetched.
Hey, it is State Trooper, I have the Sopranos soundtrack and the Bruce song was on it. Thats how I heard about the Nebraska at first and was taken back by its calm nature. One of the best musicians for the best show and R.L. Burnside was another amazing artist on the Sopranos.
@BrendanOC Hi! Is there any web store where I could buy this album and have it shipped to Finland? I'm a big Bruce fan and I especially love his acoustic and simple material.
anyone who thinks bruce didn't write this is completely uninformed. it is an original song released on the album "nebraska" in 1982. no reason for anyone to try to "substantiate" anything. any suggestion to the contrary is patently absurd.....
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.
unfortunately there is virtually no hard evidence, working on locating the contract which il have rather soon. emmylou harris's release of this song greatly predate bruce's. thats appearent for her having rights previously, as for debby johnson, she got the contract somewhere she merely needs to find it lol
I really understand this song, what a heavy one it is. Some memories are hard to let go, weather they be good or bad ones. To me for to keep visiting those certain places is a way of hanging on to them..but unfortunately it's not very health mentally or spiritually.
Whenever I am in my Home Town I visit my childhood house. I guess I need help! It is registered as an Historic Site. Hmmmm, I can't tell you why but I am suspect. :-)

Even when we convince ourselves that we've been hurt too much and no longer care, even when we're sure that it is too late, our hearts long for healing and reconciliation. An achingly beautiful song.
I keep driving by that cold and lonely place where my son was killed there in the night , and I look out and I play music, and i know he's not coming this time but next time he just might

The Boss never cease to surprise me. I always knew he was great but this lifts him to another level!! Haunting and emotional. There is no one better!!
No matter what our sins are, we can always return to our Fathers house and run till we fall;shaking in His arms, with torn clothes and wounded bodies and hearts.
At the end of every hard-earned day we can still find some reason to believe. Thank you.
My absolute favorite Springsteen song. It resonates so much to my own experience with my own father, who's 16 years dead but still looms very large in my life, not in a great way. This is a perfectly written song and this performance was a powerful one. Many, many thanks for posting it. I'm going to see Bruce tomorrow night, maybe I'll get lucky and hear this one.
