Oo man i was born in 93 and always wanted to enter the towers just didnt know it was decaying when i was 12 i moved to colombia and i just got back and its so sad to find out its closed and decaying. I remember looking at the towers on my way home on the highway ik im still young but they are such good memories
I was 10 years old and our little dance group performed there. Other than that, I recall visiting four or five times and will never, ever forget how marvelous it all was. The Unisphere and the fountains were a popular place to have your photo taken in front of, lol! So many great memories. It's a shame it's decaying though, thanks so much for posting this.
It is a shame there was a pretty good erffort in the late 90's up too 06 to make it into and Air and Space museum but it looks like it died a death from goverment and will slowly fade away.
I lived in Queens in Rockaway Beach and this sadly goes to show the shortsightedness of the City of New York. If the would have kept this sight up and improved on it they would have something great that would have brought people in from all over , but no they let it decay like everything else such a shame
I was only six years old, but I remember visiting the top of the observation tower. I had recently become a NY Mets fan, and Shea Stadium was brand new. Actually seeing it close up (from the tower) was a real thrill.
Any of you who were so incredibly fortunate to have been able to experience this fair.... I envy you. I wasn't born yet, a decade later in fact.... But there is such a powerful attraction to this place and what is left, I cannot even explain it. I feel this site should have been preserved and NOW BEFORE IT IS TOTALLY TOO LATE save what is left. Why wouldn't the state? I live in Indiana, some day I'll make it to the site and try to relive what it must have been like... Truly Charmed. Magical...
I was there several time sin 1964 and 1965. There was so much to see and do, it was a lot of fun for the whole family. I went back in 1990 to see the "ruins". The Unisphere still looked beautiful and the fountains were running. The NY State Pavillion was decaying but I got into the ground floor and I stood there on the terrazzo floor tile map (of the State of NY). The tiles were about 90% in place but were beginning to crumble. NY State should have restored this pavillion.
@68lincoln you were lucky. i wish i could get back there and take some film before it's all gone. i guess probably the fountains aren't even running anymore??? =(
It was a really exciting experience to be there in '64 and I can recall it all as clear as a bell. The fountains around the Unisphere were still running during the US Open a couple of years ago. The NY State Pavillion towers were still there as of 2009, further rusting away. NYC has big budget problems for 2010 so it's unlikely that anything will be restored in the park. It's a shame to let such a marvel of engineering just fade away.
i remember it clear as a bell too, and so glad for that! my grandparents took us several times that year (i was 7) and every time was just as exciting as the time before. I remember seeing the unisphere from a distance years and years ago, from a bus. don't remember what road i was on or even where i was headed, but when i saw that sphere, it was like magic! the sights, sounds, even the wonderful aroma (Belgium pancakes anyone?) was all around me! lucky i wasn't driving so could enjoy it! RIPNYWF
A couple of years back, not long after my mom passed away, my dad and I went to what used to be the New York World Fair. This was the place where they worked at one of the exhibit and fell in love. The place where they had worked was then a green lawn. For almost forty years after the fair closed down, she would periodically talked about the Fair. It was a sad afternoon for both of us.
Sad to say that the last elevator was sadly lowered down in February. Every day i pass by this pavilion i wish there was a way to have it saved. Seeing things like this makes me dislike this city in the way new york abandons its historic sites. Being at least called NEW YORK STAE PAVILION i assumed it should of been saved.
Nice video. It is correct to say that the NY Pavillion needs a lot of make-over. There has been some concern over the structural soundness of that Pavillion. It would be nice if that could be restored.
WIth the METS getting a new ballpack, the timing might be right.

I like it. Very nice photos. I would like to go there myself and take some of my own.
Those three observation towers, they are closed right? You can't get inside and go up to one of the decks, right?

@Nuengnueng wow, what a moving story...enchanting, but very sad. may your mother rest in peace.

Sad. It was a great fair, and with the tennis happenings in Flushing Meadow, you'd think civic pride would have salvaged this.

@Lester2955 the timing was right but the state seems to be clueless about the value of restoring the park. its a real shame.
