  • A good thing he wrote some inspiring music, because as a philosopher he was an utter charlatan

  • @supportme123

    Charlatan? why?

  • @Catz007 Well, I simply cannot take seriously anyone who writes, as he did in the Contrat Social, that "whoever refuses to obey the general will shall be compelled to do so by the whole of society, which means nothing more or less than that he will be forced to be free".

This is not only nonsense - it is dangerous nonsense as it was one of the sources from which fascism derived a good deal of inspiration.

  • @supportme123

I will be very cautious of ascribing to everything a little similar to the fascist ideology as a guilty party.

But, on the other note, all democracies do the same - the general will, the vote, the government, compel every citizen to abide by the legislations springing from the elected government.

  • @supportme123 Admittedly it opens the door to the door to Faschist ideology, but pragmatically every society must enforce some sort of general will. Government cannot function if every individual is allowed to operate based on their own sense of right and wrong. Pedophiles for example often see nothing wrong with their actions

  • I am reading his autobiography right now for study purposes and I was so curious when I was reading about his opera so I had to look for it online. I am very glad that you made this video! Thanks so much :o)
