Dream theater are my absolute favourite band ever, love all their music, but I think the reason that Thomas was not picked was plain and simple, he's not for the prog scene! I much prefer him as a session drummer!
And like @fastatlearninstuff said, he interpreted their music. Which in itself, is incredible! Not many drummers can interpret the mastery that is DT!

Dream Theater choose Mangini because he's a friend of the band, and with that, they avoid the posibility of having chemistry and ego issues, not because Lang wasn't enogh to play with them (I think he was the best drummer in the audition).
I think DT wanted Mangini because he would not add too much to the song writing process. I got the impression from the documentary that DT wanted a pure drummer, who only worried about drumming, and not really the lyrcs, melody, etc. It seems Petrucci will be the main writer anyways, producer, etc. Lang and the others except for the last drummer they tested all seem to compose and do everything themselves anyways, and they would have been 'choked' creatively, at least DT would fear that.

It had to do with how he played the songs. I don't think that DT can have music to be TO complex:P But i believe it was mostly his own interpretation.
@tenochcasiempre It wasn't about who passed and who failed, it was about who fit the band the best. I think Thomas and Virgil were the best drummers there, but Mangini fit them so completely well. Thomas is waaay better than Mangini, no contest, but Mangini just fit DT so much better.

His music is long way complex than actuall dream theater tunes are. @naleyan Nowhere in that paragraph did you answer my question. Are you telling me that somebody went around to every single video of Thomas Lang playing, shot by a multitude of people that have no relation to him in any way other than being a fan, and altered them to make it seem as though he was better than he really is? And of course, they wouldn't be able to do this with him in a live band setting as opposed to a live solo, am I right?

@naleyan look kids some of the things he does is very good but it has no place in music please dont confuse circus drumming with music. He is a drum salesman show me a vid of him playing with a live band not a backing track. As a drummer his music he plays along to is kids metal music designed for kids who cant switch emotion yes i am ignorant of thomas lang but i know about drumming i have done more igs than lang has had hot dinners sori to upset u girls who want to suck his dick
