Ok I have a question. I got this amp and it sounded amazing right out of the box. Alot like this video. Now about 2 weeks later it sounds like shit. It's really really fuzzy sounding, like way to fuzzy sounding. Also it always sounds a bit muffled when the base higher that like 2. Gets even more muffle sounding when I roll the guitars tone knob down for cleans. Any ideas of what's wrong with it?
Question for anyone who might know: I play a class 5 with a Fernandes (unknown model) and Epiphone les paul jr. It just sounds WAY too bassy cranked up and just plain muddy at any volume,(no effects) even with bass set low. I know how to tune, set inntonation, etc. Just wondering if a better guitar might solve this, (like a Gibson SG standard) or a pickup swap? I just live too far away from music stores to try different guitars.
@yearginclarke hi, I have the same amp, in my case epi g400 with stock pickups sounds muddy also, it gets waaay better with SG Standard or even SG Special Faded. At least in my case it does.
How come mine doesn't break up at 4 (i bought it brand new). What was it like in Your case, did it breakup at 4 right from the first use (of coures after warming the tube up) or it took some time? Great vid :D
Nice Job. Thank you for demo-ing the amp. I have a 57 reissue LP (and a CIJ Tele) and am looking at my next amp purchase for my studio. That was helpful.

That's a beautiful ax...but...they all sound the same all buzzed out. What does it sound like clean ?? Different pickup configurations ?? Or maybe you're just trying to show off your limited playing ability...
@guitgeo A cranked AC30, a cranked Bassman, and a Cranked Marshall Stack do not sound alike... If you're talking about these new amps with their triple rectifiers and whatnot... yeah, they sound the same once you get into mush zone, but at moderate gain settings, these "vintage voiced" amps have their own character. And making fun of his ability is a low blow kind of move. Regardless of the fact that this guy is a good player in his own right.

@theShowStopper321 : rehearsal: yes, according you don't need clean tones and your drummer ain't Animal. Effects: yes about overdrive/boosters, no about delay, reverb & so
Im trying to get the ACDC tone and I'm trying to decide between the egnater tweaker and the marshall class 5. I have a les paul standard, and can be playing mostly at home. Which one of these would be the better choice?
@TheGuitareater : for home use (if you insist, I bet it means "sensible neighborhood", right?), choose a master volume amp. So this means the Tweaker rather than the Class 5 (it's not about tone, it's about manageable home volume)
@ACDCalex : louder than most (all?) 5W amps (and even louder than many 10-15W amps). Too loud for an appartment, loud enough for cool rehearsals and even little pubs (if you don't need clean tones).
Great representation of the tone of this killer little amp. Thanks for the demo. I love my class 5 and plan on buying a couple more! Great playing too!
because, as with the JTM45/Bluesbreaker, there's a HUGE amount of bass - too much if you keep the bass control on 5. At crunch levels, the bass control on 2 gives you the same amount of bass than with most amps on 5.
It's not that it is bassy, it's that the bass are sometimes too loose (or muddy) at high gain. So, there's two ways to tighten 'em: keep the low pot under 3, OR set the middle and treble pots near the maximum. The speaker is good, no need to replace him (I have greenback 10's, and I prefer the stock one for this amp).
your surely free to like or dislike any amp you choose. I though this was a good demo, but i have heard enough amps to tune into certain things. bedrooms are not good places to show off an amp, especially a very basic single ended amp such as this one. i think thats why you comment puzzled me. this type of amp is on the other end of the spectrum from "digital" "primitive" would be more accurate.
I don't really know how to describe why I don't like the sound. That was just the best thing I could think of. Something just seems off to me. I'll leave it at that. Then again, I won't really know until I play one in person. I might change my mind if I do.
Yea, I agree digital is not the word but lifeless and flat is. Where is the sweetness? Probably has to be on ten with the speaker and components in the amp ready to melt down...then they will.
Dude, my comment was more of a "poke" at Marshall build quality these days. I bet this amp sounds amazing cranked up..and yea I've been playing tube amp for 30 years. Playin a Cornford MK50II rig now.
Thank you! That's the description I was looking for. I guess I thought digital because I associate lifeless and flat with a solid state amp (most of the time).
lifeless and flat as you say is called compressed. Which is what all tubes do when they are cranked. Your a worthless moron with no clue whatsoever. GTFO
I know what compression is and that's not what I'm talking about. Good tube amps don't sound lifeless when they are cranked. I don't know why. I just know what sounds good.
If you took the effort to read down farther than you would see that I already mentioned that. I would like to try one in person because it's impossible to hear the quality on youtube.
Just because it has tubes doesn't mean it is getting that pure tube sound. Take a look at the JCM 2000 DSL401 for example. All the bells and whistles tend to make it sound more like a solid state. A lot of "tube amps" end up that way. However, this amp is very basic (The way tube amps should be!). I'll have to listen to one in person sometime. It's impossible to hear the sound quality
It works great with the bass at 2.I am starting to love this sound..Thanks for the tip..Have you tried any cab with this amp?I am thinking of buying a marshall 412 for the class 5 but i don't know which would suit it best..
None. I always list any effect because I think it's important to know you're listening to the amp as it sounds when recorded. But of course the miking technique is part of the tone.
Absolutely, agree - the unfiltered tone is key to understanding the amp's sound. And yeah, miking is a whole other can of worms, but sounds like you got a good mic placement.
I think it's great what realdocloco does! He's playing it HIS way, and that's playing guitar. Not the 13 in a dozen guitarist who can play a song note by note correct...
LordSupro What are you talking about. an amp makes way more difference than a guitar If I were to choose between a good amp and a good guitar, I would undoubtedly choose a good amp and a not-so great guitar.
example: Marshall MG with gibson les paul, vs cheap les paul copy by stagg through marshall HW2061x. I've had both setups and you wouldn't believe how much better the latter sounded.
realdocloco: awesome tone. the non-masterV marshalls truly sing. great setup:)
I second that mrtoulouse. It's amazing how many people fail to realize the importance of a good amplifier, and dump all their money into a high end guitar instead. A guitar may be more personal, but the majority of the tone generation occurs in the amplifier.
couldnt agree more.. i played a $100 Squier "Hello Kitty" Strat through an Orange Rockerverb 100 and it honestly sounded like a million bucks. granted, the 1974 Tele sounded better, you could get away with playing a cheaper guitar and going all out on an amp. but you also have to have a good cabinet with it. crappy speakers will also take away greatly from your sound.
Great tone there. To be fair, almost any amp will sound good through an Historic Les Paul, but I like what I'm hearing so far. Looks to be a great deal for a small practice amp.
more like any decent guitar will sound good thru a great amp. You run the guitar signal thru the amp not the other way around and the amp matters alot more for your sound ;)
No, a good guitar trumps pretty much everything. I've had some incredible amps that sounded like shit when using a mediocre guitar. The guitar matters more and an historic Les Paul is one of the best sounding guitars I've ever heard.
hey supro..you don't run an amp through a guitar...you run a guitar through an amp..A good guitar doesnt trump every thing. plug that historic Les Paul into a sweet crate solid state 15 watt and see how great it sounds...
wow I plugged my sg 62 reissue into my sons crate 15 watt (with 10" crate speaker) just now and it sounded awesome...just as good as my JCM800.. you were right.
Hey man. Great demo. I'm looking for an amp for blues to metal, nothing harder than early Metallica, but it's mainly for GN'R and Zeppelin type stuff. I have a Les Paul Studio, with higher output pups than a LP Standard (guess that would help), would this amp be good? Could it get in the JCM 800 Ballpark? I Like how Marshall is actually trying to make a good amp again. Nothing like this since the 80s. THANKS A LOT MAN AND KEEP ON ROCKING!!!
At high gain it sounds closer to a hotrod plexi than a JCM800 to me, but great Marshall tone anyway. Good news: after some hours of playing, the speaker has lost its little harshness.
Is there much difference do you think between a hotrod Plexi and a JCM 800, gain wise? Also, do you mean hotrod plexi, like Van Halen and that stuff? Late 70's metal to early 80's metal?
Agreed, but they were goin' for the old school feel, with just a volume control. I like the tone, a lot, but I dont know, I have to play one first to see how bad five watts at 10 really can be...valid point though
sorry im not really that familar with those diffrent amps ofcourse i know of them i just havent used them, am i right in saying the ht5 sounds more like modern marshall amps? cheers..
Could the Class 5 get in the same ballpark at a JCM 800 cranked though? I'm looking for an amp for GN'R, Clapton, Thin Lizzy tones like that. Blues to Metal, but nothing harder than early Metallica. I can crank it. I also have a Les Paul Studio, with the pups being hotter than a LP Standard, that would help a little too, i guess. Would this be good? THANKS A LOT MAN! ROCK ON!!!!! :D
Sweet!! A lot better than your first demo. Have you tried it with your P-90 guitars yet? If so can you post one. I plan on getting one once they are available in the states.
is this amp loud enough for a band rehearsal ? (zeppelin, acdc, the who, and hendrix type of music)

couldnt agree more.. i played a $100 Squier "Hello Kitty" Strat through an Orange Rockerverb 100 and it honestly sounded like a million bucks. granted, the 1974 Tele sounded better, you could get away with playing a cheaper guitar and going all out on an amp. but you also have to have a good cabinet with it. crappy speakers will also take away greatly from your sound.

EVen shit speakers sound pretty good. They don't matter that much.
LordSupro 2 years ago
@codyt5 COMPLETELY AGREE. A great amp will make even a shitty guitar sound good. Won't be fun to play..... But it'll sound good lol

I patently disagree, but that's my opinion. No one said you had to share it.

Is the Blackstar an all tube amp? Not a hybrid?
MihailTronix 2 years ago
Yes it is.

Great tone there. To be fair, almost any amp will sound good through an Historic Les Paul, but I like what I'm hearing so far. Looks to be a great deal for a small practice amp.
LordSupro 2 years ago
more like any decent guitar will sound good thru a great amp. You run the guitar signal thru the amp not the other way around and the amp matters alot more for your sound ;)
walterppk1989 2 years ago
No, a good guitar trumps pretty much everything. I've had some incredible amps that sounded like shit when using a mediocre guitar. The guitar matters more and an historic Les Paul is one of the best sounding guitars I've ever heard.
LordSupro 2 years ago
hey supro..you don't run an amp through a guitar...you run a guitar through an amp..A good guitar doesnt trump every thing. plug that historic Les Paul into a sweet crate solid state 15 watt and see how great it sounds...

Go ahead and try it. Report back to me. If you haven't done it then you don't know what you're talking about.
LordSupro 2 years ago
wow I plugged my sg 62 reissue into my sons crate 15 watt (with 10" crate speaker) just now and it sounded awesome...just as good as my JCM800.. you were right.

this or the blackstar ht-5 ??
maffNdicj 2 years ago
Depends - if you're after a "modern" Marshall tone, and wants to be able to play at low volume, the HT-5 will suits you better.
realdocloco 2 years ago
I play hard rock like Guns N Roses. What it s better for this tone? So you say to play at low volume HT-5 is better? thanks a lot man
maffNdicj 2 years ago
how much does this amp cost? any idea how it sounds with a cheap guitar?
jgrose9 2 years ago
Nice! Sounds like a great old Plexi!

est-ce qu'on est obligé de mettre le volume à fond pour avoir la disto à fond?
sinon, pas de gain, c'est quoi ce bordel!!!??
volume à 2 , ça a la disto )à fond ou pas?

New speaker with only a few minutes of playing time. Now, one week later, it's smoother.

ok, makes sense!

Also, would a noise gate be beneficial? THANKS!! :D

No, not needed , really.

Hey man. THANKS A LOT MAN AND KEEP ON ROCKING!!!
oldGNRfan23 2 years ago
At high gain it sounds closer to a hotrod plexi than a JCM800 to me, but great Marshall tone anyway. Good news: after some hours of playing, the speaker has lost its little harshness.
realdocloco 2 years ago
Is there much difference do you think between a hotrod Plexi and a JCM 800, gain wise? Also, do you mean hotrod plexi, like Van Halen and that stuff? Late 70's metal to early 80's metal?
oldGNRfan23 2 years ago
This little guy is angry! =) great tone
Tesi4SRVfan 2 years ago
Agreed, but they were goin' for the old school feel, with just a volume control. I like the tone, a lot, but I dont know, I have to play one first to see how bad five watts at 10 really can be...valid point though
TeleBandit 2 years ago
pretty good,,how do you think it compares to a blackstar ht-5? tre bon..
fretboarder 2 years ago
Well, the Class 5 is definitly better for JTM45/Plexi tones, and the HT5 for JCM800/900/2000 I think
realdocloco 2 years ago
sorry im not really that familar with those diffrent amps ofcourse i know of them i just havent used them, am i right in saying the ht5 sounds more like modern marshall amps? cheers..
fretboarder 2 years ago
Yes that's it :-)
realdocloco 2 years ago
