  • Ashes are a very strong fertilizer, which burns plants because it is extremely concentrated.

    Wood-charcoal may contain ash in high concentrations, and the absorbing quality of charcoal means you need to soak it in minerals to neutralize this effect in a garden. Wood charcoal is a great substitute for sand.

    Sand is very heavy, and actually falls through clay in a few years, but small amounts of sand help digestion for worms.
