  • this is the best version of this song I have ever had. the harmonies are superb. thanks.

  • Sang my son to sleep with this song every night for years and years. Always close to my heart. Such a beautiful, soulful song.

  • A beautiful song.

  • muito,muito bom,gooooooooooodddddddddddddddddd

  • FAKE!!!!!

  • this is a wonderful song yet not the same without Carly. *sigh...... what a phenomenal couple, could you imagine growing up in that house making music hippie style. lol

  • brilliant ,beautiful song.

  • You don't hear this song much but its so beautiful. I love the words and the melody. Its one of those beautiful songs you love to listen to even if it tears you up some.

  • American treasure!

  • My parents used to play this song for me when I was a baby. Just heard it for the first time in probably 15 years and immediately started crying. Nothing has affected me like this ever before.

  • myself and my 12 yr old daughter sing this together, I truly love it .....she is a wonderful singer ..i am not that good but she indulges me and lets me join her ,we sit in our kitchen she is often on my knee, and we sound so sweet...I will always have these memories of this time ..we met james taylor in Dublin in July ,he spoke to us and signed my daughters wrist J.T....another lovely memory....Thank you James

  • I lost a baby when I was first married. I used to sing this to 'him'. '

.....and I still love him. ** tears

  • I have this dvd and I love it!!!!

  • Man that sounds so much sweeter than the Gibson jackso browne signature model. The Olson is hard to beat . Of course back in 1998, at lot of things were different, weren't they?

  • It's rare to find a man, a musician, who after so long turns out to be the exact same person he always was, who you admired back then, who you can still admire and listen to - because he's genuine. Such memories!

  • ABSOLUTELY DIVINE. PEACE TO OUR WORLD! LOVE IS ALL IN ALL!

  • @bakankana1 I recognize that saying. Christian Scientists say "God is All in All" but I think it has similar meaning - perhaps Love and god are the same thing.

  • @Ptinski I also recognize it. '' GOD IS ALL IN ALL'' and LOVE IS GOD, Omnipotent, Omnipresent, Omniscient.

GOD AND LOVE ARE ONE. The same thing. Absolutely.

  • He sang this song at the 9/11 memorial, and it was beautiful. He is truly a great performer.

  • This song i so beautiful, its make me cry. First time i i lisent to this song was 11/09/11in the tv. This cant describes whith words ! ! !

  • How do people dislike this song? It's amazing!

  • WHY ARE THE LYRICS FLASHED UP ON THE SCREEN?? it really messes up the feeling, and the words couldn't be more understandable.

  • God bless America.

  • WHO chose this man to sing today? Absolutely PERFECT! His music is wonderful.

  • your the best, my sweet baby james loved you dearly

  • Very fitting. Thank you Mr Taylor.

  • I watched it too.. It's touching !

  • So right for this day. Never Forget. But also, remember the brotherhood and community which continues to emerge from the Ashes. And I still love you. XO

  • Watched it too!Very moving.

  • watching him sing this live right now at the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

  • Beautiful composition! Such beautiful and effortless singing!

  • Like Jackson Browne, James Taylor's songs have a calming effect on me...I love these two guys since the 70s, thank u for posting this

  • Close Your Eyes

You can close your eyes to freedom

You can close your eyes to peace

Can you close your eyes to the desolation

That the worship of government brings

  • You're the best James!

  • Awesome

  • love love love

  • The blonde backing singer is Sally Taylor - James's daughter with Carly Simon.

  • I had to know who she was. :) Valerie Carter - Worked with James Taylor as a background singer dating back to 1975. Also with Jackson Browne, Lowell George (Little Feat), Linda Ronstadt, Phoebe Snow, Don Henley with & w/out the Eagles, Nicolette Larson, Randy Newman, Rick Derringer, Willie Nelson, Neil Diamond, Aaron Neville, Diana Ross, Ringo Starr, Shawn Colvin, Glenn Frey, Jimmy Webb, Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, Anne Murray, Christopher Cross, Eddie Money, and others. How have I never ...?

  • Always liked this song; sounds great with back-up. The gal at 0:36 ... wow. But that's the only time her face is shows. The three others get lots of camera but she is shunned... :( Still, what a great tune. Thanks James.

  • The backup singers are there because the song has harmonies in it. Notes? Music comes from the heart. You sing the way you feel. You enjoy what you hear. Listen with your heart...not your silly ears. I look up to any musician who can play and sing at the same time. Especially ones who do not need sheet music. They feel it. The drummer who uses both hands and feet and has this variety of instruments set before him...and still sings... WOW...what talent. Not an easy task. Hush and listen...enjoy!!

  • im a hiphop mc n this song keeps coming back into my life in some way or other ...so many memories and feelings attached to a song i found recorded on a blank casette about ten years ago

  • 5 people had their eyes closed

  • What an incredible source of pride for our generation...

  • THE SINGERS ARE THERE FOR THE BEAUTIFUL HARMONY...just like in life........harmony..

  • the back up singers are there because he can't hit certain notes as he gets older

  • @emaclynch Ignoramus

  • JT is an absolute perfectionist regarding his arrangements. That's why every show he performs is fantastic. If he thought the back-up singers were taking away from the song he'd be alone. They're actually very low-key as background singers go. I've seen the Beacon show at least 5 times and this sounds awesome live.

  • Best version of this song that I have seen. Beautiful song, so simple, the words just flow.

  • B.A. Period.

  • back up singers, if you wanna do your job right, shut it so I can hear James.

  • @altecl89 LOL.....I agree! What the heck is James thinking.....er....these are my friends and they are such pathetic singers they can't get any jobs.....er.....I guess I'd best let them have some air time and an income.

But James rules, so I'll take what I can get!

    Lyndon

  • So relaxing & soothing Must make my Blood Pressure go down too.

  • this song is the best song for a group drunk sing-along.

  • it's so soothing. I've seen him many times and each time was a thrill!

  • @bannedagainfromutube ....hmmm...not so wonderin' why that's your screen name...

  • wow. i'm speechless

  • One of the best songs in the repertoire. If he had only written this one, he would still deserve to be famous.

  • @akroatis He did write this song, Linda Ronstadt covered it

  • @jat13 I meant "Even if this had been the only song he ever wrote, he would still deserve to be famous". Of course he wrote it - he's JAMES TAYLOR! :-)

  • love this guy, grew up listening too his music,it always makes me feel calm wen my head is full of crazy.so happy got me and mum tickets too see him in july, thats gonna be pretty special.

  • @TheSweetiep23 Me too Sweetie. James Taylor is a "place" I go to center myself and be well. His songs and the sounds of his voice are so special to me.

  • thank you TadRapidly and to God be the Glory. Continue to encourage the people of God. "The Spirit bares witness to the Spirit" May God Bless You "TadRapidly".

    Bro Will

  • My God, this song with the vocal harmonies touch my spirit!!

  • Never mind trying to find a guitar that sounds as good as this one. It's James' fingers doing that.

  • "Harmony".... is the best instrument ever created and it was created by our heavenly Father....what a great gift. Thank You Lord!!!!!!!!!!

  • @deaconwillful And the instrument of You is channeling that beautiful message through the Holy Spirit from the Father. Blessings.

  • LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this guy! Amazing voice!

  • Don't like this version. The only one worth listening to is with him and Carly.

    It's inimitable.

  • James Taylor fue el primer disco de vinilo que me regalo mi madre en 1972, fue el regalo mas grande que me podria haber recibido y esta cancion es una de mis favoritas y me recuerda a mi madre.

  • When times are rough, a bad day or whatever, its a choice between John Denver and James Taylor for my music and relaxation. The sheer brilliance of James guitar playing gives the edge even though they both have fantastic voices.

Sadly John Denver is no longer with us but James can still enthrall us after all these years, yes The Beatles knew tallent when he signed for Apple records all those years ago.

  • @brandyandcoke Amazing comment -- I agree with you 100000%. Both of them influenced me greatly as a singer/songwriter..

  • WOW I love his voice! James is great!

  • So great, gives me chills.

  • HE IS AMAZING!

  • Great post. Thanks for taking the time to post it properly. Love this.

  • stunning, brilliant and so heartfelt. I love this song and James Taylor.

  • Who is the other guys? Name?

  • @Heavymentalmania

    Arnold McCuller and David Lasley

  • Wonderfull

  • Oh man. There will never be another JT .....EVER!!! HOW in the heck does he do it? He makes my HEART just want to LEAP out everytime. I've been crazy in-love with his music for the last 25 years ....and he hasn't let go of me yet!

  • I used to sing this to my kids at bedtime. It is the best

  • hes one of the only singers that has a good voice live (thumbs up if you agree!)

  • @xXWisconsinGirlXx He is one of the only singers who, if anything, sounds better live.

  • Beautiful song !! Phalaïna

  • This is a song to anyone I know and love. Please send good thoughts! For myself, I'm concentrating on loving the people around me, and those far away too. I like these old songs of my idealistic youth......what a beautiful version! What is better than singing along, thinking of old and new friends?

  • One man and his guitar with back up singers, but what brilliant simplicity of a beautiful song.

  • This may sound morbid, but I want this song played at my funeral!

  • @hockeytown49341:

Your not alone. I will be requesting the same at mine.

  • When my mom was in high school she smoked pot with him and Linda Ronstadt

  • Bellissima canzone.

Grazie a Larrmusic per il bellissimo video di uno miei cantanti preferiti.

Ho comprato tutti i cd di James Taylor.

Le sue canzoni hanno una melodia incredibile.

    Ciao

  • It's almost impossible to pick an all-time "favorite" JT song over the last 40+ years of listening, however this one comes as close as you can get to his best one IMO. I think this song really sums up what's so special about JT's music - the warm feeling of peace that washes over you when he sings & plays. It's almost a healing power. The harmonies of this particular version are simply PERFECT.

  • just amazing touching bitter/sweet song by a fantastic singer

  • i love this song mom would sing it to me to help me sleep just as i plan to sing it to my kids when that time comes

  • He sings better now than he did when younger....his voice is way more mellow and smooth....more of life's scar tissue. I saw him in Boston.....amazing!

  • @Fenstrat62 You should listen to the good quality vids on here of him around 1971. His voice was surreal ...

  • this makes the hair on my arms stand up !!!!!!!!!!

  • I love James Taylor. His voice is so rich and soulful and yet so calming. I am 39 and have had a crush on him for years, lol.

  • Ammmazing JT. Life time favorite..best voice and best guitar playing ever. Reminds me with the glorious 70s. He ruled. Apparently JT still does.

  • Whew ... hair is standing up ... what a sound they had in that auditorium ...

  • The harmony on this version is so close and so perfect. Ethereal. Lovely. Sad. Gorgeous. Reassuring. It is an amazing song and an amazing performance.

  • This is so beautiful.

My dad used to sing this to me when I was younger before bedtime.

And he would sing it to my birth mother before he left to go on tour.

This song is so close to my heart.

  • Lovely, close-harmony version of one of his very best songs. Sing it out loud to someone special today. Or quietly and in your head, if you like. Anyone you like. Really like . .

  • One of my favourite JT songs... Once I start listening to it I can't stop. The man is brilliant and so genuine!

  • wow

  • JAMES GOES BETTER AND BETTER ALONG THE YEARS!!!!

    WHAT AN ARTIST!!!!!

  • Haven't heard this for so long until I watched James Taylor and Carole King on PBS the other day and looking forward to seeing them live next week. My sister who passed away from cancer 8 months ago and I shared a common love for folk music. JT originally wrote this lullaby right around the time she was born and it brings me to tears. I love you and miss you but I can sing this song...

  • Not heard it sung like this before, just with Carly Simon and on his album. Very sad and ahppy at the same time...

    Wondrous stuff!

    tac

  • I absolutely love this song of James Taylor---this is the song I used to sing every night to my children when they were little---it is the perfect lullaby----

"I can sing this song and you can sing this song when I'm gone"

It will live on forever to me

  • No one is gonna take that time away !!!!!!!

Tks James for the feelings you gave me !!!!

  • Grossartig- eines meiner favourits!!

  • This song sounds a lot like Carolina in My Mind...

Love James Taylor. He has a sound to his voice and music that instantly puts you at peace. Looking forward to seeing him and Carole King this summer.

  • what a great voice and a loveley song!

  • James Taylor brings Americana to the world with is music.I love the dedication of his back-up singers and their unselfish vocals.

  • James Taylor is such a superstar and this video shows how beautiful his music can be enhanced with backing harmonies. So so great.

  • I think James Taylor is the best!!! Everything about his music is perfect.....backup vocals...percussion..guitar...EVERYTHING!!! Cant get enough of my sweet baby James.....

  • I think James Taylor is the best!!!

  • His name is Arnold McCullum. Check 'Shower the People' from the same concert at the Beacon Theater. James enjoys hearing him too.

  • Who is the African-American man, he has a beautiful voice?

  • great i remember my friend(paul nye)

  • my mom used to sing this to me as a baby. it used to make me sad and i didnt want her to sing it. and it still makes me cry.

  • We always look forward to this amazing song towards the end of each concert. He almost always performs it late, and often with just the female vocalists which I actually prefer. Simply amazing, I never grow tired of it.

  • amazing vocals, they're all soo good!

  • I saw JT in England a couple of times. Once in the Appollo in Manchester and once in the Albert Hall London. He blew the blues away on both occassions. James is the kind of artist I like to hear drifting from an open window as I'm passing and breathing the fresh air of an honest day.

  • Taylor's voice totally commands the room.

  • The Man...don't get any better !!

  • That's How It's Done

  • Words cannot describe what an amazing performance this is. JTs voice is combined so wonderfully with Arnold, David, Kate and Valerie's backups...thanks for sharing this.

  • simply great

  • incredible vocal performance that makes this song so beautiful & emotionally deep striking (see JT with Carly Simon) ... JT is such a unique artist!

  • Great and lovely song!

  • It's not alright, you still left..there was not another day....I had no place to "stay" you left me alone...u r just gone....how could you sing this to me and then leave.....It still hurts

  • James Taylor seems like a really nice guy.

  • He's also got the driest sense of humor. He's quite funny!

  • Sometimes, quite rarely, a group of musicians hit that wonderful point of pure perfection. James' justified reaction at the end of this performance, says this is one of those times.

Reminds me of a similar moment in you tube time. John Martyn with Kathy Mattea - 'May You Never.' (have a look)

  • WOW. i spotted john martyn and kathy mattea a mile off!.

    how amazing is that video!

  • ... love it ...

  • Just a thought. I might be wrong of course.

  • Why do I have the feeling that it is not James but his brother Livingston?

Fact is that they are look amazingly alike and have very similar voices.

  • Beautiful beautiful verson of this song :)

  • James kicks ass

  • and still amazingly talented and a perfect performer. What's your point?
