  • I liked the GG for its MEGA COLOR when most portables were either Game Boy or those annoying Tetris machines, hated it because its slow LCD ghosted heavily.

Ghosting was worse but still tolerable on the Game Boy, but with a bright backlit screen, I expected CRT-like response 10 years too early.

  • wow not bad for the gg just wish it had more sound effects

  • how did this happen? what have you done, you insane genius?!?!?!

  • Where is the worms in the first boss?

  • Wow this actually looks really good for game gear.

  • Green Seven Force was SUPER dumb downed hahah! It makes Easy mode seem more difficult in the genesis version hahah, but i guess i underrstand the simplicity of the Game Gear. Though the jetpack idea is pretty sweet! Still prefer the cart though haha!

  • @Linklex my friend modded his so it could last for at least 14 hours....pretty neat i geuss

  • this actually looks like a decent port, considering you can really only do so much porting from Genesis to Game Gear. I do find it out how they changed the way Green's stage plays though...

  • I can't believe they ported this to the Game Gear virtually intact. I am very impressed. I also hear the cart commands a high price.

  • catchy music :)

looks awesome ashame the prise for a gamegear is exspencive and games are to there ju

  • 0:25 bison is pissed

  • Not a bad conversion.

  • this looks super awesome!

  • Short battery life wasn't the Game Gear's demise. SEGA sold rechargeable battery packs. Game Gear in the early 90s was anything from a failure.

Keep in mind GAME GEAR successfully defeated it's competitors Atari Lynx and NEC's TurboExpress for dominance in that color portable market.

That's also why those other two systems are rare to find today.

By 1995, SEGA had 5 systems on the market so they made a rash decision in halting everything so they could focus solely on the Saturn.

  • Had a GG. My only complaint about the system was short battery life, and it was hard to find alot of games. It was a cool system though

  • how did you record this footage. what did you use

  • That last boss in this video was spectacular. I'm sure this game would have done well had it been released in the west.

  • For an 8-bit machine that's an incredible technical achievement!!!

  • I found a boxed copy of this but didn't have the guts to buy it in case it was crap: now ive seen how good this is I'm going to buy it i think

  • @OJSlaughter93 Don't you mean you thought it was crap?

  • im amazed at how faithful this is to the megadrive game.

  • amazing how such an old console can compare to gba graphics

  • @Awesomo4003 The last, most graphically impressive Game Gear game shown in a blurry video clip *does* compare pretty favorably to some GBA launch titles, yeah. :P

Seriously though, I grew up with and loved this system, but let's not get carried away.

  • Sega was stupid not to release this game in North America. It looks really close to the Genesis version.

  • wow this is much diffrent fomr the amrican version look at my vid i actually just put one up :P but serously huge differences in visual things

  • Your video is from the Mega Drive/Genesis version. This here is the Game Gear version. That's the difference, the platform, not the region.

  • why is it that I prefer the music on the game gear? o.o

  • i know what u mean the mds music is awesome too but this seems to be more dramatic for me :D

  • Wow... This looks almost exactly like the Genesis version. Sega had some good programmers back in the day.

  • yeah it does... thats when badass SEGA ruled the gaming land ;D lol... yeah Nintendo had Contra... but we Had Gunstar Heroes!!! ;D even though Contra Hard Corps came out for the SEGA genesis as well.

  • fyi this was not programmed by sega, but rather by M2, the company that also did the remake of Fantasy Zone II for the system 16 on the PS2 Fantasy Star Complete disc.

  • I love how Seven Force has only Five types

  • Secen Force didn't use all of its forms on Normal and Easy mode.

  • Game Gear failed cause of its short battery span.

  • @Linklex7 True. God it would eat up my batteries like crazy. And you can't have that with a portable handheld platform.

  • @Linklex7 Really? I think GG failed because they removed the Black stage

  • @Linklex7 i plug mine into the wall

  • @Linklex7 oh yes i remember the days 6 batterys 10 min hahaa i had an adapter but it had a lose connection an if you moved to much booom game cuts out it hurt so bad

  • @P0GFLIPPER 10 mins? what kind of batteries were you buying lol? you would get at least an hour from cheap batteries from what i remember, these days batteries are of course much better and good rechargeable batteries are so cheap it doesn't matter so much these days. only real problem these days is you every single game gear needs the capacitors replacing which kinda sucks.

  • @Linklex7 It's about the same as the PSP, 6 hours, Compared teh the GB's 17 hours. And it didn't fail, it did just fine. Just not as well as the Gameboy.

  • @Linklex7 by that logic the 3DS should fail too since it gets highly critizised for it's short battery span...

  • @ScarecrowCruz I don't see why people say that, all you do is turn the wireless off on the 3DS, there you go, a crap load of battery life.

  • @Linklex7 true but this game and many others are available by emulation i play the game gear games alot on my dreamcast no need to worry about batteries

  • @Linklex7 Still lasted longer then the 3ds....

  • @Linklex7 That's the only reason too. That thing was SO awesome.

  • the GameGear was far supirior than the Gameboy it's a real shame that it failed.

  • GameGear was just a portable Master System.

Not saying that's a bad thing. Space Harrier on Master System was impressive for its time.

  • I knew about Gunstar Super/Future Heroes on the GBA bet never knew about the Game Gear version. Neat!

  • The Graphics are awesome!

  • I didn't know this was on GameGear.

  • Gunstar Heroes was on Game Gear?

  • yep, and on the gameboy advence too

  • If someone gave this to me with gold gamegear I'd be happy.

  • They did a bloody good job with the hardware they were given. If this had come out in Australia back in 1993 I reckon all those Gameboy lovers would have had nothing to bitch about and would have had make the switch to sega. Ah how different things could of been had we been included in japans release cycle

  • sorry to say it but one or two games never make a difference. and everybody that did want to play it could have imported it. Japanese boxes and manuals look a thousand times better anyway. one of my biggest mistakes was getting the european version of Gunstar Heroes on Mega Drive. The manual just sucks and does not compare to the jap original, same for the Box cover.

  • I was wondering what was going to happen when you reached Bravoo Man but they actually pulled it off. Even if he moves in slow motion.

  • Waou i love this song !! waouh for the epoque it was cool ^^

  • waou tu parles anglais comme un français toi ^^

  • C'est un peu nourmlamous

  • how did you capture the video?

  • game gear was way better than game boy those days

  • the only downside? battery life

  • Whatever Sega of America was smoking must have been seriously strong shit!

  • is just me or does that guy iun the red at 00:25 look like M.Bison from Street fighter?

  • It's not just you, me and my friends call him M. Bison Jr lol

  • lol shweet XD

  • yea his movesets got a move exactly like m bisons psycho crusher to

  • that's creepy lol O-o

  • not really infact I think hes a m bison wannabe XD

  • yep - compared to the main heros- the real one would've smashed them alrdy- the heros are so short O_o

  • on game gear they are but ggs street fighters were smaller

  • ohhhh

  • Too bad it didn´t hit the states...

Might have saved the game gear. Maybe...

  • saved the gamegear??? the gamegear was a hit! it had a long good run! in my city of santa ana all kinds of people had one, what city do you come from???

  • it hit america i bought one

  • Wish Treasure would go back to those Golden days for us Gamers...miss those days.

  • Treasure still make great games...

  • Thats true, but they need a lot of time to bring them out :(

  • Well they're talking about doing wiiware games so maybe the wait mightn't be as long for those.

  • teyre making a sin and punishment 2 for the wii!

  • And I just can't wait already :)

  • I beat Gunstar Heroes when I was 10 years old.

It was the best game I ever played.

It was my most favorite game for Sega Genesis.

    I miss playing it.

  • @SeekingRapture same same

  • I bought the Game Gear version at Anime Central this year and got it home only to discover the screen on my Game Gear was broken!!...not fair...

  • I hope that you are joking, if not, you are a retard.

  • Shadowlink the drugs you smoke must be very harsh. that is the gamegear version. if you have trouble you can use GOOGLE to find out for yourself instead of just typing shit down. the game gear had impressive graphics for it's time.

  • gunstar heroes=gunstar superheroes (SP)

  • Damn, looks like Seven Force (or in this case, Five Force) has some new tricks up its sleeve. I approve.

  • In Reply to Everyone--do you have A GameBoy Advance SP, or A Nintendo DS? If so then you Might be in luck--the Sequel to this, and "Guardian" are on the GameBoy SP. I owned both Games Seperately, and Enjoyed beating them even though they were Difficult on it's Hardest Setting...Good Luck Finding Them.

  • 3 things wrong in your description.

Sega of Japan actually decided what got ported to what region. It's like that with all J companies.

Gunstar Heroes didn't do that well commerically when it was first released in the states.

And finally, 1995 the Game Gear was in severe trouble. It was already pretty much at the end of its lifespan.

So that's why this version didn't come to the states.

  • if only sonic 2 for game gear was this close to the Genesis version. Sonic 2 for Genesis is my favorite sonic, Sonic 2 for Game Gear should be burned in a large bonfire.

  • Sega had a lot of issues back then.

  • Considering the power of the game gear, treasure did quite well. This dhows there's no excuse for ports not being near perfect. If they can do it on the game gear, the can sure do it on a console.

  • the best game gear game beside sonic :P

  • I like the helicopter better then the sled thing in the Genesis version. I am not by any means saying this is better then the Genesis. I just wished they used the helicopter machine in level 2 instead of the sled.

  • but the sled was a creative concept, jetpack wasn't D:

  • Apart from graphics and music, level one looks like a perfect copy to me!

  • It is decent for the Game Gear. But besides graphics it is not a perfect copy. The stage is shorter and there is no worm dropping from the sky when you destroy that weird palm tree boss.

  • However, the worm doesn't appear on the easy difficulty on the console version.

  • Its really well done for the game gear actually

  • I love the Game Gear.

  • gunstar super heroes is better

  • no shit??

  • There was a GG version?!?!

  • Sega was always so ahead of the times, so much innovation

I wonder what a next gen Sega console would be like now

  • Alas, the Dreamcast bombed financially so I don't think they'll be trying that again.

  • yer i wish that Sega makes a come back one day and releases another console that knocks Nintendo off the map,,SEGA 4 LIFE!!

  • Id love for a new Sega Console. The dreamcast is my favourite console of all time so another sega console would be great...In fact all my favourite consoles are from sega (Dreamcast, Megadrive, Game Gear).

  • I wish this version came out in the US but the genesis version of this game is a testament of how much power genesis had.

  • fucking amazing game ;D

  • Ahh well, I guess Gunstar Super Heroes is better than nothing...

  • anyone notice how the second level is no way near as long as the original

  • Do you think Treasure ported this by themselves to gamegear? aswell as Dynamite Headdy?

  • I played this

It's really good, but REALLY HARD, even on easy!

  • Wow, a game that would actually justify the game gear!

  • wow... it looks much better on the genesis, seriously, the music, graphics, and everything on this game aren't as good as what ive seen of it, maybe this was just the japanese version

  • Well Genesis is 16bit. I would say that the Master System hardware held this Game well. We couldn't expect this level of action and Graghics and sound for the NES or Gameboy Color. Seeing particles and sprite movement like this shows that it takes a talented team like Treasure to make the Game Gear shine it's potential. Developers should take note.

  • ultimate road trip game? most definitely. Sega must've been on some heavy shit, then, not to go stateside with it.

  • this looks awesome, is it worth getting for the virtual console? thanks!

  • The Game Gear version of Gunstar Heroes was ported by Japanese developer M2, the company responisble for the PS2 Sega Ages. This version is included as part of the Gunstar Heroes: Treasure Box in the PS2 Ages lineup...

  • This is just awesome. We needed this. Gunstar Heroes on GBA wasnt as good as the original.

  • whoa, this looks amazing for a gamegear game. and so close to the genesis version too.

  • they were smoking a thing called crack

  • THIS is an 8 bit game!? Are you kidding?

  • yea cuz the sega gens version had backgrounds lol. but they grafix were better and sound of course

  • no where near the genesis version but ways past any nes or mastersystem game.

  • Looks like a great game. The graphics are very close to the Genesis version.

  • my gawd!! this shit is hawt!!8 bit huh???wow blows away most 8 bit games!!!leave it to good ol treasure!!

  • They made Gunstar Heroes for the game gear? SWEET! Now I REALLY want to go to japan.

  • whats the point the game gears battery life span sucks.

Just get a Nintendo DS with an M3/R4 card or a PSP with custom firmwareand load the rom onto them

  • well, some people like having the authenticity of having the actual game in their collection. you can't say that you own a rom. Just my idea.

  • It's a good idea too, It does make more sense to actually own the game than the rom itself. When you say you have the ROM, then your saying that you have the backup of the game and at the same time asking for harsh criticism.

  • Or buy it of the internet you know.

  • the best weapon was the blue one combined with the green one, wasn't it?? oh,man so many hours devoted to this game......although the european version was a bit different, as in the second level is shown, where you were sliding across the ceiling and the floor...oh, the amount of robots one followed by the other was desperating in the extreme level!!!

  • Oh man, I thought this was just the best Mega Drive game ever. Now it's the best Game Gear game ever too.

  • i have the english updated versoin for the advance its like this only red and blue are iin a team and green is theyr enemie and blows up to kill this enemy it was really hard tho fun game

  • This games tight... I had it for the Sega Genesis... I played it like, 500 times...

  • OMFG i fucking owned at that game.... i beat the entire game about like 30 times

  • it looks great

  • yeah Game Gears was #1

  • Wow! Makes me wonder if Dynamite Headdy was good on GG too.

  • It is actually.

  • Cool! You got a vid? I'd love to see it!

  • game gear owns gameboy

  • If they could fit all this awesomeness into a Sega Game Gear Cartridge, why could they not fit it into a GameBoy Advance Cartridge? They took away so much of that awesomeness in Gunstar Super Heroes.

  • looks like ive finally found a "good" game gear game. But oops it didnt come out in america!

  • can you imagine if Treasure had made Games for SMS during it's Life...NES would've suffered.

  • this is a sega game make by sega

  • Seven Force is....Intresting in this version. (Seems its diffrent in every single version of the game.)

  • I always thought this version was amazingly close to the Genesis given the hardware limitations...Thanks for the video post.

  • Good question. Most likely it's corporate marijuana.

  • wow this is more than a simple port it seems.. the gg ristar game is the same.

  • they were probably thinking "the game gear is dead anyway, why bother..." bastids.

  • Yes as y'all can see, the railroad level is like playing Joust a bit, where you hold the button to fly and let go to stop.

  • Wow. Pretty damn good port from the Genesis version.

  • yeah it looks almost the same I was shocked rrribit

  • I always felt that the Game Gear never reached its full potential. There were a few games worth playing on it, but the rest were ill-concieved ports of Genesis games, or movie tie-ins. I never even knew that GH came out for it until now. Thanks.

  • Nah it had almost the same good/bad game ratio as the gameboy. It's just that many of the good games were released late in the console's life or weren't translated. It's true that a lot of them were MS/MD ports though. I recommend checking out Ninja Gaiden, Sylvan Talem, Power Strike 2, Shining Force games.

  • Shinobi 1&2 are awesome as well.

  • Shinobi 2 is a classic.

  • This version is actually in the Gunstar Heroes Treasure Box for PS2. It also has the English Genesis version and the prototype.
