  • Least snow in December since eighteen somethingorother I keep hearing. Of course a couple of good dumps in Jan. or Feb and a cool spring and we could be back to postholing in June and July! Unfortunately I can't do any real thru hiking now during summer because of work, so my strategy is to do quick 2-4 or so night trips looking for trout, peaks or both if time and energy allow. In recent years I've become a big fan of eastern Sierra trailheads for that reason.

  • No doubt! I can really see the advantages. I've used an ice ax a couple of times and it really helped on the ascents, but was actually a hindrance coming down. Looking forward to being able to shorten or lengthen depending on direction. Thanks for Subscribing!

  • @RayBayFilmStudio I would definitely consider using an ice axe and crampons if I was going through at the very beginning of the season, depending on the snowfall levels and elevations. It looks like this year is going to be a low snowfall years so far - only 13% snow pack levels according to the California Department of Water resources. That could change in a hurry though.

  • Well you seemed to make good progress without crampons! I don't use trekking poles (yet) but I'm thinking of including a single pole to go with my new footwear. I just added three new vids that have some footage from the sierras. Happy New year!

  • @RayBayFilmStudio Trekking poles are one of those items that, once you use them, you can't imagine hiking without them - especially on the down hill sections. They have prevented me from falling many times.

  • Very fun! Like going along with you on a backpack. Nice work on your cross country route finding, too. Crazy amount of snow last summer. eh? I just got crampons, just in case, for next season. Good luck--thanks!

  • @RayBayFilmStudio I used hiking poles in lieu of crampons. There were a few sketchy moments when I had to kick steps, or use my poles to make steps in the snow.

  • Very nice. Loving your trip so far. And it's all at my back door. I need to look into some of the trails here for a short trip for a novice like me. By the way the macken in my name is shortened Mackenzie same spelling and everything cousin?! LOL

  • Sure is. The best place to hike in the world.

  • Wow! Beautiful, isn't it. Love the Sierras.
