No joke, this song sounds like an entirely different, but just as amazing (possibly even more amazing, as much as I love Liza Minelli's version). I can't believe I hadn't heard this before. Just... Wow.
She won the Tony and got amazing reviews. She was actualy acting the part of a Cabaret performer not singing as if she was the biggest star in the world
Didn't know she had such an amazing voice. I always liked her as an actress and considered her to be very talented. It's so sad the world and, above all, her family lost such an incredible woman. Such a pity we've lost so many artists these past years: MJ, Natasha, Brittany Murphy, Heath Ledger, etc. They will all be missed forever.
I am a big fan of Natasha Richardson, and wish I could have seen her, and heard her, as Sally Bowles. Natasha was wonderful in films, and I am so glad she received the Tony for "Cabaret." I hate knowing she isn't still around. Thanks to video she will live forever. And she will always be in my heart. Thanks for posting this - it made me cry
Yes, that is true but as I said in an earlier comment I'm sure the band was note-perfect and spectacular even though if it were 'real life' a small orchestra in an unknown underground cabaret would probably be just as mediocre as the singer. But not for the show. Same goes for the character, especially since she had some very showy and catchy songs to sing. It's a MUSICAL, folks, it needs real singers and musicians.
Yes, I've heard that but as I never saw the Jill Haworth version I wouldn't know. I think Liza played an American version of Sally Bowles very well, I imagine an English characterization would be a bit different. But I just didn't think she had the strength of personality (as Liza did) or the musical ability to pull it off. Hey, it's just my opinion :0

I didn't actually see her perform the entire play, maybe she was very good at the acting part. Though she doesn't strike me as the Sally Bowles type at all. But maybe she made it work. But not the singing. And, as we all know, these awards are usually more political than anything else, I don't put much stock in them.
Are you basing the Sally Bowles type on Liza Minnelli? Natasha Richardson is actually very reminiscent of Jill Haworth, the Original Broadway Sally Bowles.
Sally Bowles is not supposed to be a technically impressive singer. Jill Haworth, Judi Dench, Natasha Richardson, all major Sally Bowles onstage were not natural songbirds..
She doesn't do justice to the song. If hadn't been the daughter of famous theater people she wouldn't stand out enough to get the lead in something like this, just not that musically gifted. But she didn't deserve what happened to her.
I do understand what you are saying. The character wasn't intended to be an outstanding performer, probably just an average, middle-of-the-road wannabee. But when so much of the show is musically oriented (I'm sure the orchestra was letter-perfect even though the imagined cabaret band would not have been) you want to see a great performance.
I had the strangest feeling today. Maybe she was a dream. I miss her so much. I did not know her work well until she was gone. I knew of her talent and beauty, but I never realized how brilliant she was, and how truly good.
This voice perfectly resonates with this role. Bless Richardson. Liza is eternal, but this is an amazing performance.

Maybe this is one of the songs that you hear every single time and you feel that, every time is the first time you ever heard.
Every time sounds like it's new.
That's what I always like to hear this song.

I really liked Liza as Sally but I just heard this song by Natasha and WOW! I really like how she softened it up. :) Very pretty.

She won the Tony Award for Leading Actress in this role. So I think she did it justice enough!
