  • Do you still use that same water bladder?

I think I might bite the bullet and finally get one for myself since I want to backpack this year for the first time. I am also buying the "hiker" water filter as well.

  • @markshmily Still do. It's held up great so far and I'm still liking it.

  • Was that the 1L or 2L? I'm thinking about getting one for bike rides, but I think 2L might be too big.

  • @VideoWolfe The one in the vid is a 2L.

  • @VideoWolfe dont worry about it the bladder itself is not very heavy its the water you put in it i would always go a little bigger

  • @bsboy20 I'm sure it won't be too heavy, just not sure if it will actually FIT into a swiss army backpack for school, not a hiking backpack.

  • @VideoWolfe oh, you have no hydration bladder compartment :(

  • penn state!!!!

  • I have an older Platypus and I love it. I've used Source products given to me but the Platypus is is just so simple! Lightweight, heavy duty, easy to clean. Mine has a screw-on instread of your QD-hose and a simple zip-lock instead of your "folder" but I've experienced 0 problems over 5 years of use.

What I love over the "hole/lid"-bladders is that it's easy to fill from a stream and that it's easier to clean out and dry. Just remove hose, pop in a normal bottle, stand it up and let it air!

  • @903lew I'm with you on the ease of cleaning on the Platypus. Just makes it a lot easier to deal with. Many times on short dayhikes I don't take the bladders cause I hate cleaning them when I get home. This one makes it just a bit easier.

  • @903lew I thought having a pet platypus was illegal.

  • Zip-lock.... cleaning access.... Think I'm sold!

  • Thanks Cr0ckert, think I get one for a back up. I do like the way your opens and closes. If it's could enough for you and Nutnfancy, it's got be super for me. lol. Thanks again

  • I like yours better than mine. I have the screw on cap. I can freeze or cool my down in the freezer bit was made for that with the gel squares. It's to last about four hours and I would say depending 3.50 hours. I like this over the bottle. Where you get yours?

  • @DennyRec I think I picked it up from REI.

  • Thanks so much for this video. I'm off to getone now!

  • Penn State!

  • I too have a love/hate relationship with water bladders. So much so that the hate factor has won out. I hate that they aren't as durable as a hard plastic container, that you have to clean and dry them, that they cost way way too much, and that the dealers were making a fortune off my gear needs. I now use juice and soda bottles and carry them in pack, on my shoulder strap, or in hand for convenience. They're free and lightwieght and never leak. Thanks for the info. It's always good to see new.

  • @slodeth5 I honestly think the juice/soda bottles is a good way to go. Like you said, cheap and lightweight.

  • @slodeth5 Biggest difference between bottles and bladders is that when it's empty, the bottle is still the same size. Obviously bladders shrink as they empty. If space is of no concern, bottles are fine. For me, that's rare. I understand there are advantages to bottles as well (think: steripen). I usually carry 1 nalgene because I can measure and use it with the steripen, and a bladder. ymmv

  • @FLATblacktical I enjoy the nalgene/bladder combo also.

  • @FLATblacktical Full, you will still need the space in your pack. So if you have collapsables in your pack when full, it doesn't matter when they're empty. You still need a pack with the same capacity. I'm liking the new generation of colapsable bladders as they're lighter, but already on through hikes, they're are reports on youtube of leaking. Bottles are just dependable. I've never had one leak on me and I do 'alot' of backpacking. I'm rainbowhiker. Don't use this chanel anymore.

  • I used a gelert bladder for the first time the other day, and I found it gave the water a strong plastic taste. Is this a normal problem, or will it go away after a few uses? Or is it because it is a lower quality product?

  • @firebelliedtoad Not sure about that brand, but most the stuff I have used the taste has gone away after some uses.

  • @Cr0cket20 Thanks, I will keep trying it then, because a two litre bladder seems to take up a lot less space than two one litre bottles!

  • Another good vid. Was wondering - where was this video filmed? Looks nice! Not in my neck of the woods that's for sure.

  • For anyone in the UK, check out the Source Widepack, which is of similar design and won Trail magazine's 'Best in Test' 2010

  • That's REALLY cool!

  • The Katadyn Hiker is a good investment, it won't let you down, there is also a Katadyn drinking bottle. Good vid

  • I use a cheap bottled water from the supermarket....

  • @pedrosilves Not a bad way to go.

  • Nice review. It seems Platypus really listens to users and values feedback. I use some of their stuff and love it.

  • @HawkLMT Good to hear. This is the first product of theirs that I've used. While what I think is a little on the expensive side it seems to be a well thought out product. Thanks for stopping by Hawk.

  • Check out VT Army Navy for Platupus bag.

  • @ud45 will do. Thanks for the tip.

  • You are Da' Man Cr0cket.

  • @ChromeFreak123 LOL thanks Chrome.

  • Very nice equipement you have there, I got google this right away, thanks for the info

  • Very Nice. I have the camelback military version of the water bladder and love it. Much heavier duty but again...kinda expensive. Be safe out there.

  • @hinckleypoland Sometimes it's hard to drop that money up front (looking for a good pair of hiking pants and that's what I find is they're all expsensive). I just hope the gear I buy will last for years. I don't think I've seen the military version. I bet that one will hold up quite well.

  • @Cr0cket20 I hear ya bub...I hate spending money on stuff but I will say that if I find a high quality item that is somewhat expensive chances are it will last for a long while (or so I hope). I have 2 of the military bladders and they are awesome. If I dont crank on the closure lid it does leak a little but I can easily fix that. Got them at my local base (my family has access to the BX) Keep up the great vids.

  • Crap mine is still sitting in my pack from my last trip...

  • @conleytgn LOL!!!! Dude I do that all the time : )

  • I totally agree with you about maintaining a water bladder but they are so helpful for staying hydrated on the trail. I zap mine every now and then with Efferdent denture cleaning tablets. Add one tablet, a glass full of water, squeeze out the air, and once the tablet is totally dissolved let a little water flow into the tube and valve. Then you just let it sit for a while to zap all the micro monsters growing inside. Rinse thoroughly and you're ready for another adventure!

  • I can attest to the mold that your camelbak will get if you don't empty and dry it. Sucks! It's a real pain to clean in out if it gets to that point, and t's pretty tempting to skip that whole cleaning/drying routine when you're tired from a long hike.

  • @TheLateBoyScout Ha I feel your pain. Sometimes by the time you get home you're wiped out. For me that's one advantage the water bottles have over a bladder system. Just get home, empty, and throw in dishwasher.

  • Yah my camel back is starting to look its age and you did all the research for me =) these bladders look awesome

  • @TNPviewer One thing I really like is the open top to fill with water. I like how it's not on an angle. Something simple but I do like it.

  • I just picked up a new bladder system from PFIDude...it doesn't really say who the manufacturer is, except that it has SBS stamped on the plastic ring on it. Haven't tried it out yet, but it looks decent and only $14.95. I'll have to put it throught it's paces for a bit during some local hikes and then review it... maybe. LOL!

Nice vid bro! (maybe I should have said that first!?! LOL!) Keep up the good work!

  • @74Hobbes I didn't know PFI sold bladders. Good to know. That's a good price too. I was really reluctant to spend the $30 on the platypus, but thought I'd give it a try. If it lasts as long as my camelback did, I think the $30 will be worth it.

  • I've never had any problems with camelbak reservoirs, but this new design from platypus does seem to have some great features i.e. detachable hose.

You'll dig the hiker water filter, just remember to clean it & sanitize the hoses after you use it. Yes I know another thing to clean & maintain when you get home & believe you me, I think of that as I'm out there filtering water : )

  • @CampfireTalk I hear ya. That's one aspect I don't like about the bladders is the management when getting home, then the tent needs to be aired out, along with the sleeping bag, etc, etc. But it's all worth it to get out.

  • @Cr0cket20 I agree it's absolutly worth it. I just got back myself & am cleaning gear now : )

  • Nice review on this bladder. Alot of great insight. Keep up the good great work man!

  • I used a Platypus for years and years without any faults in Africa and here in Brasil. I recommend them to anyone looking to get a bladder system.

  • @FightDiary Good to hear that you have an extensive and positive experience with them. Africa and Brasil? Would love to visit both places.

  • @Cr0cket20

Yeah dude... both very nice places. Also, just to add to that, in both places I chucked in a few ice cubes, because the mouth was big enough to do so, and was great to have the cool water in hot temps. Not sure how hot it is where you are, but...

  • @flashlightfreak9 Dude I really like Camelbak. Think they are great bladders. Used my last one for about 10yrs (not as fancy as they are now obviously due to the advancements seen over 10yrs). I'll have to check out your vid. I love how the Katadyn hooks right up to the hose insert on the bladders...very nice

  • I'm getting ready to upgrade to the platypus, and ditch my camelbaks. Is the taste any better with the platypus. My little platypuses? platypi? don't have the rubbery taste like a camelbak but I thought it might be the hose.

  • @SixtyAteOutdoors At first it did just cause it was new. But within the first liter, the taste went away (however, I'm not very picky with how my water tastes, so experiences may differ).

  • I didn't know about this yet Crocket. Thanks for the heads-up man! Great vid!

  • "Watter bladders, I have a love hate relationship with water bladders."

    Dude! TRUE STORY!

When you pulled the zip lock thing off the top i was like, "No freakin way!!" what a sweet find man! thank you so much for sharing!

  • Yeah the price is what got me on those. I went with a Walmart one its still kicking $9.88 - schmoo -

  • @MichiganTNP I hear you. I think that is a downside to it.

  • What was the filter?

  • @soulwinningministry Katadyn hiker

  • Very informative. having never used a bladder system before,it gave me a good base of understanding how it works. A few questions. Does the water stay cool? Is there some way to cool the water? Maybe evaporative cooling?

  • is it strong

  • @painfull94 Time will be able to answer that question. But it does seem to be well constructed. I looked at that aspect when purchasing and thought that it seemed to be fine.

  • @Cr0cket20 from the video it looks stronger then some hydration bladders. keep us updated if i starts to leak or anything.

    thanks great vid

  • Very cool

  • Always dig the cool wildlife attacking shots you include, like the duck that obviously trained John Belushi for his "Animal House" scene near the ladies dorm. Animal? Damn strait!

  • @matt4270 LOL

  • Great review Crocket, I might have to get myself one of those!

  • very cool, My camelback just got a pinhole leak, but its over 8 years old, so I cant complain. I will look at those, I like that they're a thicker plastic than the rubber camelbacks

  • i need filter and bladder

  • Have this system as well, easy to put ice in, and to clean.

  • Great vid, you can't hold out on us on which filter you ended up going with man details!

  • @darksector2010 The Katadyn Hiker purchased for about $65.

  • I love Platypus bladders, I'm glad you put a review out.

  • Cr0cket20, which water filter did you get? The Katadyn?

  • @Glockster42 The Katadyn Hiker.

  • Hey man. Question for ya.. Why not just buy a 3L Camelbak system! They're also $30.00 and much more durable than those platypus bags. Might want to check them out.

  • @iTek42 I really like camelbak. Had one for about 10yrs and it held up well. Wanted to try something new, and for me I think 3L might be a little too much bulk in my bag when trying to fit everything else in. Especially when I go with my kids (have to carry their stuff as well). That would definitely be a good alternative though.

  • Looks allot easier to dry with the enlarged opening I have a camelbak happy with it but now I have been cutting back to 2 gatorade bottles to cut weight but like you enjoy the convenience of a hose

  • @medicjimr I hear you. That hose system is nice while out. I've always liked camelbak as well, definitely think that is a good option. The gatorade bottle is a good idea for weight savings.

  • I've got the older model of Platypus bottle/bag and have no complaints. I really like the way the top opens in that one. Makes easier for cleaning (I think). I also have the water filter system that plugs directly into the drinking hose (after removing bite valve), which makes for easier filling. Great review. Thanks.

  • Any chance of the hose coming out or the top coming off accidentally?

  • @AndrewXAnarchy So far it seems pretty good.
