  • Horrible, it's like a tank in a pretty dress

  • W U N D E R L I C H !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Anneliese Rothenberger once said that Wunderlich has never been replaced, and she was right. This is such a lovely performance, not only the wonderful voices but also the inspired acting. Thinking that Wunderlich was only 29 and Prey only a little older when this was performed. Quite unbelievable.

  • Wow! I was only here to listen to a few moments of this video (curious to know how Il barbiere sounded in German, and with a negative feeling,to be frank). But before I knew it the duet was over, and I guess I'm going to play it again.

Only Prey & Wunderlich could make this happen, both phenomenal.

Curiously, in 7:00 - 7:18 Mr.Wunderlich reminds me of those cute 19th cent. automatons,in a sweet way,of course. It may be because of his costume, his impeccable singing & all those mini gestures :-)

  • Eine Sternstunde der Oper! So etwas gibt es heute nicht mehr.

  • Meravigliosi!!

  • wunderlichs and preys masterpiece...good that i can hear it every day here on youtube^^

  • They are both"wunderlich"!!!!!

  • Wonderful voices! So sorry they are both dead. Thanks for posting!

    Assolutamente PIENI VOTI !

    5 STELLE - FIVE STARS *****

  • @jeanmolin55

Très heureuse de vous retrouver là Jean ..

  • I LOVE WUNDERLICH!! Such a wonderful voice and we see that his acting is equally lovely here. But how about PREY?!? This was great all around!!

  • Will never, ever, tire of this...Absolutely out of this world...

  • This is MARVELOUS---AN ABSOLUTE GEM!! Brilliant acting, brilliant singing, and they are both utterly adorable and YUMMY--better than chocolate!! Thanks for posting! It's in my favs now!

  • je l'ai en DVD. Magnifique.

  • Wunderlich had a voice perhaps as beautiful as bjorlings(my personal favorite tenor) in my eyes.. But he was also a great actor, which bjorling was not.. The day he died the world truly lost one of its greats.

    Bravo

  • I liked this video so much that I have bought the DVD as an early Christmas gift to myself.-(in May!!!)

Not just the singing, but the acting is SUPERB.Sheer bliss.

  • Two of the greatest voices ever!

  • this piece is a treasure. When Wunderlich, Prey and Fischer-Diskau were singing it was a very very special time.

  • I have watched this opera in its entirety a hundred times and can't get enough of it...

    BRILLIANT!!

( What a tragedy when Fritz died at such a young age...what a incredible loss for the music world...)

  • you really need to see the 2006 production by the on their Met player with Florez and Mattei. I have watched that one a hundred times. The staging is absolutely brilliant. It is in HD too.

  • What a perfect blend of two great German voices and the acting?well, just perfect.

Their enjoyment in performing together comes across even on the video.

How wonderful to have seen this opera.

  • Fantastic singers, but I prefer Italian personally.

  • Most of us prefer operas in their original language, but these are such exceptional singers and actors that I rate this higher than any other version on You Tube, including those in Italian.

  • Einfach herrlich! Und man versteht jedes Wort!

Simply marvellous! And you can understand every word!

  • Absolutely priceless. MORE PLEASE!!

  • Hallo Canzonettasullaria,

    Mobezi

  • I dont't care if this is sung in Russian, Hungarian or any language, with these kind of singers, this is the real deal! Pure bel canto...

  • Never ever saw it better!!!

I love them and their voices.

Wunderlich and Prey have harmony together.

    Wouw!!!!

Hermann Prey did once say in TV, that they were like twins. Their voices were very suitable.

  • wow. and I thought that I don't like Rossini... one of the best opera performances I've seen. Why the audience is so cold?!

  • Because they are German.

  • It's amusing that the recit dialogue is more conversational than most performances in the original italian. So the moral kids is: Yes you can have operas in other languages that sound just as good as the original. And besides, the intention is for the common people to understand. Opera for the people!

  • But I must say... I like the Florez/Mattei version also very much. But this one is still better, I listen to this approx. 3 times a day or so... since 2 weeks^^

  • LOL Figaro is about to go in his shop- Count "Where can I find your shop, tell me"

Usually they sing this before Bartolo´s house, don´t they?

But the voices are great- the best version I´ve found here on YouTube. I´d like to hear a Florez/Prey version also, but I´ll probably have to wait 70 years for that.

    INDISPENSABLE.

  • totalement d'accord. Je l'ai en DV cette version.

  • dafphil You might try videos from Bel Canto they might have it. you dont give names

  • Not on any stage in all the world could you see or hear such a performance of this today.

  • Does anyone here know of a black and white studio film of the Barber of Seville (in Italian), very, very, very early (30s?), lots of hiss and crackle. I taped it over many years ago and lost it, and it was delightful. Does this ring any bells out there in YouTube world???

  • An absolute delight for eye and ear!

  • I'm afraid I do desagree with you; but I believe that this particular point is vastly a matter of taste. Of course, if it was here in "YouTube", I would have pointed out the Prey/Alva duett under Abbado, which is in Italian. However, you should notice that the German translation was made with the greatest care and with the utmost respect for Rossini's partitura - and that, to my mind, is worthy of the highest praise, namely because it allowed an excellent performance by both Wunderlich and Prey.

  • I guess you won't believe it, but in earlier times operas in Germany were sung in german. ;-)

  • Jajajaja, very funny remark! German operas MUST be sung in german, but italian ones, I just don't get the idea... Look, I'm from Argentina (we talk in spanish, or so) and I can't see english movies translated to spanish, it's awful and you also miss of course a lot of jokes, 4 example, 'cause you can't translate them in spanish. But of course people who don't understand the native language of the movie (or whatever) would prefer the translated version, I don't care about that.

  • This is from 1959; in that time Europe wasn't as blended and operas were translated all the time. Nationalistic attitudes and strong feelings prevailed to have opera sung in the natiional language. You saw a lot more opera on television in America translated into English too. That trend, luckily, has gone by the way side.

  • The advent of subtitles helped a lot too.

  • They make the German language sound as beautiful and musical as the Romance languages Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese. They are terrific!

  • If you like this, check out Wunderlich in tragic mode as Lenskyin Onegin -- so poignant.....

  • This what opera is really about. On hearing it for the first time I got goosepimples all over. These amazing voices and the ease and elegance with which Prey and Wunderlich sing is unparallelled.

  • Cu adevarat mari performeri...vocali! O bucurie sa-i asculti! Multumesc.

  • wonderful singing, but odd to hear it in German! :-D

  • two of the best german singers ,thank you for this posting

  • Amazing, I am bown away every time I see them. Unfortunatelly there wont´t be a duett of this quality in Opera anymore.

It is like having Al Pacino and De Niro in the same movie. Or like having Maradona and Pele in the same futball team.

  • Thank you! What's the great singers!

  • Wunderbar!!!

  • Simply wonderful! The acting of Hermann Prey is ravishing!

  • The Castor and Pollux of the Opera! It's all joy!...

  • The Best Baritone ever (Hermann Prey) and one of the best German Tenor of all times.

    Thanks a lot!!!
