Daumier is mainly associated with caricature but I think his paintings are truly exceptional. His light and shade effects are brilliant and the line evolves getting close to the art noveau. I love his very late paintings which weren't included in the video - they show amazing brushwork.

Tout à fait d'accord ! Son talent et sa notoriété en tant que caricaturiste ont quelque peu éclipsé l'immense peintre qu'il fut. De ses personnages se dégagent une force et une intensité remarquables. Il a su figer le mouvement de manière subtile, probablement grâce aussi à son talent de sculpteur.
