Because they used some cool mirror effect when ''Doctor Who'' fades in. If you look carefully, you'll also see the word ''Doctor'' mirrored, but somehow the effect results in the word 'Oho''. :P

@Chequeredpenguins He first uses it Season 5, during his second incarnation. The First and Sixth Doctors never used a sonic screwdriver.

@Chequeredpenguins The Doctor first uses the sonic screwdriver on "Fury From The Deep". I read found this out in "The Docor Who Quiz Book" I do not know if that episode shows where he gets it from.
