  • So. Epic.

  • That is quite a comment chain, I'll have to read it when I'm done doing commoner things.

  • This is beautiful on so many levels!

  • this was awesome!

  • Awesome job! Everything the other people posting here say is true.

  • were is 02:40 from ... i want to knwo XD

  • what episode is 2:04 from??

  • Probably the best video that I've seen on YouTube, and I've seen thousands. Incredible talent

  • This is really, really awesome! This version of the song is my favourite version, and you made everything fit with it wonderfully. Great vid!

(Also, did you know I'm watching a tv show called Rude Tube (is shows the best internet vid out there) and the episode Mashed 'n' Mixed has this video in it? Congrats on making it to tv if you did know!)

  • @flyfloyd33 Thanks for the info, I figured they did show it, they asked permission but I never did get around to sending them the okay... but I don't see why they'd need it from me, since I don't own the rights to the song or the video, I just put the mashup together. I'm kind of honored they went ahead and did show it though. I'm just glad people are still enjoying my silly little hobby, if you guys only knew how drunk I was putting this thing together...

  • Nice work!

  • Anytime I'm depressed, I just watch this video and it gives me a good fucking laugh and makes me feel better :)

  • Priceless...

  • Love this...possibly the best clip on you tube......

  • best parts, Arek with the lute-thing, and "dance and drink and screw" at the end

  • I'm not sure if you made this video, but if you did I wanna thank you because wow. I downloaded this a few years ago and have just fell for it. It's my favorite thing to come out of the Animated series hands down. Not only that but this Shatner cover of the song has replaced the original as my favorite. When I listen to Common People, this is the version I prefer. I have this video to thank. On the editing, this video had a heavy hand in inspiring to get my own video edits out on the net.

    Thanks

  • @PumpkinHipHop Thanks, that is very kind of you to say. I also like this version of Common People better, and that's not something I wanted to admit to at first. I think it's because it starts out as kind of a caricature of Shatner's acting, but quickly becomes brilliant as Joe Jackson joins in and the emotional fervor builds towards the end of the song. I'm glad you enjoyed it and hope you continue with your video edits as well!

  • Best cover ever. Lol.

  • Thumbs up if RudeTube Brought you here!

  • 2:39 i want a collar that changes color when i stand up!

  • what's episode is 2:04 from?

  • [cont'd, @floodlezoot, re "continuity"] ...if there was a shot of a hand with eyes drawn on it and lipstick, mouthing the words, would that have been beyond your capacity for coherant and logical thought regarding such simple editting principles (heck, these days, it's practically "convention" - [oops... sorry, Mr. Shatner, I didn't mean to *#@&ing-well _swear_! ]) I was shocked by his rendition of "My Way" - Sid Vicious had a GUN! What, no phasers!? (Set for "stun", "dismay", or "confound")

  • @cyb3rsurf3r1 I appreciate your comment. Suffice it to say, I did initially want to keep Kirk as the only one mouthing Shatner's voice, except, of course, when he's quoting what the girl in the song says... then it was okay for the love interest (in this case Spock) to mouth Shatner's parts. But as the production progressed it turned out that they reused Kirk's animations so much that it would have gotten boring. (con't)

  • @cyb3rsurf3r1 (con't) I think the only non-Kirk lip sync that really bothered me was using Spock towards the end when Shatner's really into the emotion of the song... but I just couldn't find any really good shots of Kirk with scowly eyebrows or a mad look on his face. Spock's mean eyebrows just fit the song, and in the end that's what I had to fill the rest of the video with.

  • response to comment re "continuity"@floodlezoot. I'd like a word with you common people; We're all critics these days, but I studied Film&Television. Your comment about lack of "continuity" in the lip-syncing is actually not valid, and, I hope - out of a need to be able to respect the intelligence of other humans - that you were merely trying to be funny, because the "spoken-word" portion of the track, by Shatner, is meant by the evil plagiarists here to have been seen as _funny_ [cont'd...]

  • what episode is at 2:03???? o.O

  • 2:42 hellooo?

  • @al3699 i think it's episode 22 Ptolemy Wept.

  • very interesting...but stupid! Goodnight, Lucy . I et you nevr sang asong like that. Of course shatner hasn't either. wouldn't call tjatsinging...but ireally liked te video

  • This... this might be the most wonderful thing I've ever seen.

  • 57 people prefer Spock/McCoy.

  • Awesomeness.

  • this is cool !!!

  • 4:28 FURRY ALERT!!! ALL HANDS ABANDON SHIP!

    LOL

    Thanks for the video.

  • RUDE TUBE!

  • The only Shatner cover song better than this is Black Sabbath's "Iron Man" featuring Zakk Wylde!

  • how is this song so awesome?

  • Needs more bassoon!

  • OH MY GOD THAT LAST SCENE WHUT

This is awesome. I think I just died and came back to life several times.

  • Fuckin love YouTube.. Awesome editing buddy...

  • You, sir, win the internet!

  • Fuckin' gobsmacked.

  • Excellent editing for a great cover of fantastic Pulp song!

  • My new favorite thing on the Internet! Watching it over, and over..!

  • SImply AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Just fantastic! I found this song back in 2006 and it has been a cult hit for me since. I'm trying to figure out how to kareoke to this at a local British pub where I'm at right now. That would be perfect. Anyway, your mash up was awesome! Really the type of thing that makes the internet worth it! Thanks man!

  • I had sex to this song, I came 4 times before it was over...

  • @Goldenboy2191 um. wow.

  • @Goldenboy2191

    Cool!

    I only FAPPED...

  • @Goldenboy2191

    Really, who wouldn't... Shatner rocks!

  • @Goldenboy2191 "...and in 30 seconds, she said, I want to live like common people."

  • @Goldenboy2191

    Don't spoil her.

  • @Goldenboy2191 You must have the weirdest porn collection known to man. lol

  • @Goldenboy2191 Did you sleep with common people?

  • Nice

  • Brill!

  • Amazing!

  • excellent video, excellent album

  • I always thought the cartoon version of Lt. Uhura was hotter than the real thing. Not that Ms. Nichols wasn't hot enough back in the day, but that the cartoon version of her was...well,extra spicy! :)

  • This is such a great video. I love the editing of the video and music. Everything is in tune. They really look like they are saying the lyrics.

Actually, I found this video by accident. I'm so glad I found it though. So great!

  • I think it would have been a hell of a lot better if you kept William Shatner's voice to the captain kirk mouth movements, and the pulp singer's voice should have been only Spock's mouth movements.

    Come on, man...... continuity!

  • @Floodlezoot I agree, however the production was not lending itself to that. I began actually only inserting the Kirk character in for Shatner's voice, but realized that it wouldn't work comedy wise. Trust me, I didn't give up without trying to do your suggestion, it just wasn't working out.

  • @kirkslashspock

Dood, excellent job. This video is epic in every way...!

  • Excellent!

  • Fantastic!

  • Very good, I like the ending.

  • great lol

  • I find this by mistake but I couldn't leave it. It's so well done

  • so wrong so so wrong, fucking hiliarius

  • 3:14 This and the Slaver weapon are my favorite episodes!

  • Very nicely done

  • Thumbs up not just for the original song, but for the great job you did at editing together the video. Brilliant!

  • @KayAnders Thank you very much

  • lol my dad loves this and hes a homophobe

(he was surprised when i told him what slash meant)

  • I am in love!

  • Beautiful!

  • This is from my favorite audio recording. Isn't it time for the never volume????

  • Thumbs Up IF You DONT Know P0c0d0t !..

  • Marvellously and geniusly edited. Fan-fucking-tastic stuff

  • lol, totally awsome. He should be in the next Star Trek movie, maybe as Kirks' uncle or something, lol.

  • Awesome!

  • This is really really excellent. Sly editing.

    kudos !

  • "William Shatner's cover of Pulp's "Common People." " ?????? whos covering who???

  • I. Cannot. Stop. Watching.

  • @tribblesomnomnom Same oh man

  • Excelente, mas excelente mesmo esse som... people like youuuu

  • whoa

  • awesome

  • OMG! This is epic! I love it! You are awesome!!!

  • This song has been stuck in my head for a month because of this amazing video.

  • 0_0

    this is amazing

  • Fucking brilliant video. No other is needed.

  • This is the gayest video I've ever seen, and I don't mean that in some sort of derogatory way. I mean that, in the most literal way possible, this video is gay. Distilled homosexuality.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, if that's your bag. Also, it's awesome.

  • fuck this is so great, god i love this so much xD

  • sorry for the comment spam, but i just realized the album version doesn't have the solo bridge with the chorus. Is this a different version made by you after all ?

  • @galaeron I can only tell you that this was made from the American CD version. There is an edit available on iTunes, as well. It may be that if you purchased it on iTunes you bought the edit version without knowing it. It's also possible that copyright issues have kept the full-length version out of certain countries (i.e. Germany).

  • just realized this is indeed shatner's version from the album Has Been. All this time i thought you had mixed the original pulp song with a Shatner version yourself (and done an awesome job at it, too). I'm getting the album then. Thanks for making me discover this amazing song and congrats on a cool video to go with it.

  • @galaeron Whoops... Youtube needs to send out comment notifiers more timely. I didn't even see this original comment until I expanded the comments section. I'm glad you like the song. While I'm pretty good at mixing audio I don't think I could mix the two versions, but thanks for the compliment. :)

  • @galaeron William Shatners 'Has Been' is a brilliant album well worth listening to, contains this great track also with Joe Jackon vocals. Good shit ja.

  • Sorry if this has been asked before, but is there any chance of being able to get a better quality (sound-wise) audio track of this video ? This version of the song is brilliant and I would love to have it as a proper mp3.

  • One of my all time favourites on YouTube. Thanks

  • @kirkslashspock, as a fan of William Shatner's SUPERB album Has Been, I salute you. Words fail me, but stevebitgimp hit it on the nail. This is truly brilliant. You should send Mr Shatner a link.

  • Excellent edit. Many thanks.

  • Hilarious!

  • Holy shit why is this so awesome?!?!

  • This was done brilliantly!

  • This was posted on the blog Crooks and Liars, and the comment was "Way better than it should be" I agree Shatner singing normally makes me cringe, but this tune rocks and somehow it works..way better than it should :)

  • I like how different this is

  • I thought this would be a bit of a piss-take of the meaning of the song... but it actually f'ing brilliant.

  • f*cking brilliant!

  • fucking brilliant!

  • This shit is the corniest noobish crap EVA!!!!

  • Epic is overused - this is Homeric. Not to mention homoerotic.

  • @stevebritgimp That's the funniest comment I've gotten so far dude.

  • I would love to read this fanfi- OH HOLY SHIT IT'S RIDLEY AT 3:42! SOMEONE WRITE FANFICTION BASED ON THIS RIGHT NOW I AM TELLING YOU.

  • Hey Kirkslashspock, Thanks for responding in a mature manner to me in email! I do disagree with most folks in that this is pretty hideous. I've always been a HUGE Star Trek Fan, (and pulp fan) and I love Shatner and Nemoy and their characters, I just really "cringe" every time I hear him sing anything. ...Green sexy alien or not, he cannot sing, and yes hopefully he does understand that!

  • @DarkSeraphGurl well I don't think anybody here is arguing that he CAN sing... I certainly am not. Joe Jackson is the singer here. Although he DID try to sing on albums like The Transformed Man, he was still really doing "Spoken Word" like the Beatnik culture of the 50's and Ken Nordine's Word Jazz. Shatner has always, I think, fancied himself a Beatnik poet. In fact I'm pretty sure the entire album this comes from is more Spoken Word Jazz. You might check out the track "What Have You Done"

  • @DarkSeraphGurl (continued) which is about his experience when he found his wife dead from drowning in his pool... very powerful stuff, and not sung at all

  • @kirkslashspock I didn't even know he had written a beatnik style poem for his model wife who drowned. I listened to it and now I'm just sad... :( Okay, I'll admit I still cringe whenever I hear him "do song..." but that just had me crying...

  • @DarkSeraphGurl Well, it is a pretty sad poem. Regardless, I can agree with you that he's awful at singing, but with this album he pushed those boundaries, which endeared it to me, especially with stuff like that about his wife. I'm glad he recorded it.

  • This was great.

    2:41 !

  • one of the best video's on youtube. awesome...

  • My inner geek is on - Shatner singing Common People with some Saturday morning Trektoons. Is there anything the Shatner can't do?

  • I've got my inner geek on tonight. I came across this on my Ipad. Shatner's version is better than the original. And Saturday morning cartoons added in don't hurt either.

  • kirkslashspock, you've definitely earned your youtube name.

  • OMG....Shatner actually did a cover of Pulp's song...this is a true travesty, FAR WORSE than Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Doesn't he know how truly bad he really is or does somebody like his mom keep telling him he can sing? STOP ALREADY!

  • @DarkSeraphGurl most people are disagreeing with you here, but your comment is welcome.

His album was actually quite great. I'm fairly sure he knows he can't sing worth shit.

  • Very, VERY WELL DONE!! I love the original song, and this "cover" is fantastic.

  • I've been playing this video to death. I just love it!!!!

  • The best video I've seen in a long time. Genius....well done.

  • Beats Palin Twitter Beat poetry, pure fun. Thanks for an awesome upload.

    "You so funny"

  • Yeah even though shatner is a liberal....he is an icon and talented in so many ways.

    Two thumbs up.

  • I love Pulp, and have loved them to death for the longest time... but I love this tribute, too, sincerely! Shatner is as brilliant as anybody could have hoped him to be!

    The corporate class fucking sucks.

  • My life was getting all better until I saw this...

  • @leeroynaggins I apologise for putting your life in retrograde...

  • Thanks for the laughs!

  • Really neatly done! Must have taken ages!

  • @ThePurplefiona Just a month, actually... fell into place faster than it should have, but thank you

  • rotoscoped zoom at 2:51 nicely placed, as everything else.

  • I dig..this is good driving music! Ronnie B. told me so.

  • this is so awesome!!!!!

  • That was brilliant! loved it!

  • amazing! :D

  • genius

  • This is one of the most amazing pieces of art I've ever experienced.

  • Love this , love Shatner.

  • Who is singing with Shatner? Is it the lad from Pulp?

  • @SaintJimmy2000 it is Joe Jackson. Ben Harper produced the track.

  • @kirkslashspock It was Ben Folds, not Ben Harper.

  • @bachmelle Yes, I uh... don't know why I said that. Good save. Sorry all.

  • @kirkslashspock erm... Ben Folds. Thanks who pointed that out, I don't know where that brainfart came from.

  • Craig loves this....he's GAY......

  • im not a star trek fan or a shatner fan, but i found this to be....amazing.

  • Arguably the most feel-good song of the past twenty years.

  • This is pure Gold.

  • Wow. That was on cartoons? Them in the stockade with the reference to a pentagram, or as it was presented a pentagon?

  • Epic ;D

  • I would of never guessed that a Shatner musical performance could give me chills. But this song does it. Joe Jackson's dual vocal and the building intensity of all that plebeian rage really makes the original pale in comparison.

I can't stop listening to it. Oh, and this should be the official video.

  • Holy crap this epic!

  • freakin' awesome. good match-up of the video to the music. i like this version of the song, the original really stunk

  • @effenfish I have to disagree, I loved the original, but yes I think Shatner did somehow enhance it with his over-the-top performance. It's like seeing Meatloaf perform. He might suck, but wow, he gives it his all doesn't he?

  • @kirkslashspock what?!? meatloaf is awesome! the refrains in his songs are extremely catchy.

  • @effenfish have you seen him live? I've seen him six times... three of those times were incredible. three of them were excruciating. it's always hit and miss with him live.

  • @kirkslashspock i am dumbfounded that you would go to see meatloaf six times. i have only consumed prepackaged meatloaf songs and video, not live. seen devo and go-gos live though

  • groovy!

  • Tetszik! :)

  • Bizarre...

  • Satan get out of this video!

  • Massa demais!!!

  • Spock will never be common people.

  • Can you make something similar with Shatner's song "You'll have Time"?

  • @NCC6116 Probably not, but I always thought of doing another video to "Ideal Woman." Just seemed like rehashing an old idea though.

  • my fav you tube vid ever :)
