  • LOVE IT... start to end

  • You're shit.

  • 8.5/10, saw them open for M83 in Seattle and was blown away !

  • Hanging on is clearly the best song in the album in my opinion...It's been a while since a song has hit me that emotionally and i'm a guy...

  • I'd say "Ancient Eye" is the second best track, next to "Hanging On". Has a wonderfully dark and fat synth backdrop that coincides perfectly with his vocals. "Johny Belinda" is also another good one you didn't even bother mentioning.

Can't say I agree with your review here, of all the tired indie music out there with poor singers who hide their lack of talent with excessive reverb, AC manages to stand out by not forcibly being different, but by just making good music and this album proves it.

  • I think the best songs on the album are "Hanging On," "Playing House," "High Priestess," and "Way Too Fast." I wasn't particularly in love with the opening title track, and, like the reviewer, I felt the end of the album was not as inspired as the rest. However, this is not to say I did not enjoy them!

  • I just bought this album (the first album i've bought in like 5 years) because i found it SOOOOO amazing when i sampled it on the youtubes.

My favorite songs are Hanging on, Johnny Belinda, and High priestess.

I just find everything about this album super soothing and amazing to listen to. It's great to drive in my car to as well.

    uggh...it's just so good.

  • Personally, I enjoy this album a bit more than you do, it seems, but I still seem to agree with some of your criticisms. For me, after High Priestess, the tracks admittedly lacked the previous inspiration. While my favorite tracks on this album aren't necessarily the admittedly brilliant R&B tunes, I find that they are those that fully embrace, and in my opinion, perfect, the haunting, ethereal, almost Classical in-nature sounds, contained within You Are All I See, and High Priestess.

  • I love some of the songs on You Are All I See. I think Active Child has the potential to make some incredible stuff.

  • Hey just wanted to leave two comments. First, this is a great album. Second, it's kind of annoying how this video is listed on the Active Child playlist. When most people click an artist's youtube mix they expect it to be uninterrupted material from the artist, not a review from somebody unassociated with the artist. Although I highly appreciate what you do, it just bugs me every time I want to listen to the playlist when your review comes up.

  • Run out of ideas? How can you not see that this album is amazing? This man is innovative as hell. He takes the orchestral power of gospel choir vocals, and makes them accessible and more humanistic through R&B delivery, which also raises the talent and symphonic's in R&B which is usually stale anywhere else. He basically takes the booming power of classical music styles, and then their pop equivalents and marries them perfectly. Every theme usual pop executes is realized through indie integrity.

  • love this album.. "dreampopra"

  • I love Active Child <3

  • >music critic

    >sun ((o))

You've got to be fucking kidding me

  • 0:18 HOLY FUCK!!! That effect scared me hahaha

  • @goodbybluemonday Wire - Pink Flag

  • Hey fun fact my family's cherry tree was used in Bicentennial Man as a piece of driftwood

  • @tomaterr20 nice.

  • I definitely think 'Hanging on' and 'High priestess' are the strongest on the album. I've listened through it a good five times now and those two are the ones I have to turn up and really get swept away by. 'Hanging on' is so love sick and beautiful--on the top of my plays this week.

  • Did anyone notice that When your love is safe opens with the lyrical tune almost exactly mimicking Gin Blossoms - Follow you down? Check it out. Scary similarities.

  • had a listen to this album and it's stunning

  • I never heard it.

  • ANTHONY please don't review another perfect 10 "classic" album. That's for sellout review sites/mags. It's a waste of time. People should just listen to the albums you post on the wall.

Speaking of which, what the fuck is on your wall?

  • few requests please: stephen malkmus, i break horses, thundercat

  • do tha carter IV pleaase, when it comes out

  • LMAO! I listened to "Playing House". The guy sounds like Him from "The Powerpuff Girls" :D

  • Tha Carter IV. This will interest me.

  • Anthony, you never named the two RB-ish tracks?

  • It sounds like I'm in heaven, chillin with jesus and stuff, but once in a while a cabrio drives by in slow-mo.

  • why does this guy say "forever" after the name of the album at the end of every album review?? what is it supposed to mean? its quite irritating..

  • @darthpigeon04 your quite irritating

  • @TheOriginalZero1 Your use of the wrong you're irritates me.

  • @maalbe987 ooops my bad :P

  • @darthpigeon04 It's his sign-out phrase. It'll grow on you. Trust me.

  • Playing House is definitely one of my favorite songs of 2011 already

  • Not Sure im in that Neo-R&b Movement...Review Cities Aviv Anthony!

  • I was totally thinking the same thing about "Way Too Fast" resembling James Blake. It's got the same minimalistic sound and the voice modulation is very similar. Overall, I really do feel the same way as you about this album. The beginning is awesome, but my interest kind of wanes by the end.

  • It was better than I thought it would be. But still not completely my thing. Great review, as always.

  • in the beginning.. HUH!!!!

  • Thanks for reviewing this. Never heard of it, but fell instantly in love with it.

  • Nice whale noise there. 0:20

  • @Laura1123xox LOL

  • I'm am absolutely head over heels in love with this album. I've been obsessed with Active Child ever since I heard the track "Wilderness" off his Curtis Lane EP. This album was everything I could've wanted and more. It's a 10/10 for me.

you are a music criticism god. put my thoughts towards this cd in words.

  • Awesome. Best review ever. You're like the Gary Vaynerchuk of music.

  • Tony NeeDles, I think you should review the new Stephen Malkmus album. It's less self indulgent than his past few releases. It also seems to contain the lyric "God speaks through that albino... Hitler".

  • I no it's a little late, but a track review on Dungen's Jack White produced "Oga Nasa Mun"??

  • RHCP - I'm With You! You can listen to the whole thing on iTunes i think.

  • The Game- The R.E.D. Album

  • Nero - Welcome Reality

  • They won't be out for a while but you should review the new albums by DT, Mastodon, and Opeth when they come out

  • Could you Review Flash Bang Grenada(Busdriver and Nocando)'s 10 haters album?

  • @LeMrAtlas Thanks, haven't seen this one. Must be from before I became a regular.

  • remember.

  • Hey Anthony, how about reviewing an album that you would rate 10/10? I don't think I've ever seen you give a perfect score before, which is fine, but if there's nothing that fits that rating, then the other ratings become sort of arbitrary. Clearly there's no objectively PERFECT album, but how about reviewing one that in your OPINION would score a perfect 10/10? I'd be really curious to know what you'd consider worthy of that.

  • @goodbybluemonday the wire - pink flag

im pretty sure he only reviewed that album so people would see what kind of album he would give a 10

  • @goodbybluemonday Well that one is easy, just pick a random Soundgarden album and there you go :3

  • @goodbybluemonday You can find his 10/10 ratings at his rateyourmusic page at collection/theneedledrop/r5.0

  • @goodbybluemonday An example of a 10/10 review: watch?v=EBXwpNHHKtA

  • @goodbybluemonday

You can't just pick a day when you want to review a 10/10 album... if one comes he probably will rate it thus

  • @goodbybluemonday AGREED!

  • @goodbybluemonday he gave pink flag - wire a 10/10

  • @goodbybluemonday

If you'd stuck around long enough, you would know the answer to this. He HAS reviewed at least one thing with a perfect 10, that thing being a certain Wire album.

  • @goodbybluemonday He gave Wire's Pink Flag a 10/10.

  • @goodbybluemonday He did once, he reviewed Pink Flag by Wire, go search the review up.

  • @goodbybluemonday i don't really give scores for "perfection." if something is a 10 to me, it's not perfect. i think you misunderstand what my numbers mean to me personally. i'm just rating my enjoyment. of course there are 10s out there to me, but they must reach a level of enjoyment i don't see being passable for me personally. 10 is basically the threshold for enjoyment for me. if and when a new album reaches that threshold, i'll tell ya.
