I know they were good planes during their day. But Russian civilian planes, while rugged, were alway a step behind in terms of quality. It's not that you couldn't do better, but your communist system (and trying to keep up with the western powers) made making quality military hardware priority. Oh, cars, heavy machinery, computers, and planes are still made in USA, just to name a few things. And don't forget the 4 M's.. American music, movies, money and Marlboros..loved all over the world.
First of all Russian civilian planes proved to be most reliable in line with our military equipment. Tu-154 for example can be exploited in -60 +50 temperatures. Can land on all kind of airfields.
Heavy machinery? - Actualy you unawared about our heavy machinery. computers? Well probably in 80s USSR slowed down in this one- but still Russian programmesrs and some mathematics and other patents used in your IT.
Money? Well everybody loves money. But i can say - dollar is not loved - everyone already searches a replacement for your currency.

OK this missile, as far as I can tell has a 300 mile range. To say that we don't have a defense for it is silly. In order for an aircraft or another ship to fire this it would have to come within the 400+ mile envelope of a carrier battle group. there is defense against every missile. I wouldn't underestimate the americans. The vulcan systems on carriers can shoot down missiles. Americans also have laser and particle weapon tech, but we don't know if they have been deployed on ships going to Iran.
even ESSM's and sea-RAM can,t shoot down a yakhont, when it's on final phase it over throws any CIWs.
the poblem of the US defence is that they can not replicate a moskit or yakhont final phase, even the Russian Zvezda MA-31 supersonic target missile so they can not literally make a weapon that can intercet it.

I'm aware of all of that, but you still missed the point. HOW MANY WESTERN MARKETS DO YOU SELL THESE ITEMS IN? AND HOW MUCH? Also, I never said just the USA with regard to exports. We import most of our consumer electronics, also. Along with a bunch of other items. But you can find American products everywhere. But I don't see anything from Russia...here or anywhere else I've been. When it comes to consumer goods, the only people buying Russian items are those who can't afford western.

Russia is rich in natural resourses. We were making planes for the whole world until Airbus came about. I am fully aware of Russian military/civilian transport planes. The biggest in the world are Russian planes, like the condor. Still, given the choice, unless they need something bigger than produced in the west, most will buy American or European if they have the money. Remember, I'm talking civilian/consumer items. You forgot one thing ;) While after 1971 USA fooled entire planed and buys everything from them with paper money - USSR and warcaw pact was forced to withstand external threat and pressure all alone ;) That is why all resources was distracted from consumer goods to military tech. BTW - you just poorly awared on consumer goods we used in USSR - that is all. We had everything we need - from healthy food - to PC

As for passenger jets - The only reson why in 90s and today not so many Russian jets sold all over the world is because in 90s our aviaindustry was ruined - and was unable to produce enough jets even for internal usage - that is why even in Russia we use REFURBISHED Boeings and Airbuses - they are even cheaper than new Tu-200 series for example - so it is not about money or quality - it is about quantity.

I know they were good planes during their day. But Russian civilian planes, while rugged, were alway a step behind in terms of quality. It's not that you couldn't do better, but your communist system (and trying to keep up with the western powers) made making quality military hardware priority. Oh, cars, heavy machinery, computers, and planes are still made in USA, just to name a few things. And don't forget the 4 M's.. American music, movies, money and Marlboros..loved all over the world.

First of all Russian civilian planes proved to be most reliable in line with our military equipment. Tu-154 for example can be exploited in -60 +50 temperatures. Can land on all kind of airfields.
Heavy machinery? - Actualy you unawared about our heavy machinery. computers? Well probably in 80s USSR slowed down in this one- but still Russian programmesrs and some mathematics and other patents used in your IT.

OK this missile, as far as I can tell has a 300 mile range. To say that we don't have a defense for it is silly. In order for an aircraft or another ship to fire this it would have to come within the 400+ mile envelope of a carrier battle group. Not saying it cannot be done, but opposing the idea that there is no defense.

They can launch it from 300 km away.

there is defense against every missile. I wouldn't underestimate the americans. The vulcan systems on carriers can shoot down missiles. Americans also have laser and particle weapon tech, but we don't know if they have been deployed on ships going to Iran.

the poblem of the US defence is that they can not replicate a moskit or yakhont final phase, even the Russian Zvezda MA-31 supersonic target missile so they can not literally make a weapon that can intercet it.
