You can paint the white buckets black (absorbs heat/light) and then white over top (to reflect heat/light), should solve the issue of the majority of the food grade buckets being white.

USplastics (dot com) carries black food grade buckets and gasketed lids at a really competitive price. Also not bad prices on gamma seal lids. No, I don't work there...but its been a favorite 'toy store' of mine for years. Worth checking out.

Having worked in the development of polymers, I can tell you there ARE differences in those types of plastics. What causes it to be black? Often lower quality materials with contaminates are used for plastics that are not intended for consumption. Although they may both be primarily be composed the same type of plastic, the quality of the the plastic and the additives inside could vary very much. Remember that many compounds are colorless and odorless. Thanks for the video. Keep them coming.

Mylar is a vapor barier, plastic is not. O2 will slowly pass thru any plastic bag or even the buckets. Yes mylar also stops light.which is also important. I agree all the buckets I have had 2 and HDPE on them to. I have some old food grade buckets from when I worked in the cafeteria in college, and I've bought many more, they all say that. Maybe there is something about the dies, but if you cross packing your food, it doesn't matter.

Sometimes the bucket has a dye added to the plastic that is not food grade This alone will prevent the FDA from approving it as food grade. And sometimes the bucket manufacturer uses recycled HDPE. These buckets also are not food grade when something is put in the bucket that is a nonfood type product such as paint, chemicals, this makes them no longer food grade. HDPE is slightly porous and will absorb chemicals which will gradually leach back into any food you place in the bucket later.

@MassPrepper I apreciate your input on this subject but there are several ways at looking at this. Buckets are not dyed. It is all done with pigments. When it comes to FDA it is simple echonomics for the company and shelf life. Any over seas plastic food drum will be a very dark color a bucket sent to a baker will be white its all about the cost of the container and its intended shelf life. All petrolium products break down in time its a simple fact. Thats why GLASS and STEEL rule for FOOD STRG

Be careful the Buckets may be made of the same material but the "food grade" comes from the chemical they use to lube the molds with to make the plastic release from the molds during manufacturing. PLEASE look into that for your storing.

@SpartanB88 A polyethylene bucket is a polyethalene bucket besides even a food grade bucket says one time use. So the question is to clean or throw away? I would love to know your resource on the lube used in the extrusion of buckets? Im not being meen here but would always like to know if Im sharing bad informarion.

I have a theory that the reason they use mylar bags for things like Cheetos is so that you can't see that the bag is only 1/3 full. Have you ever noticed that the Cheetos in the clear bags are completely full? The same thing holds true for potato chips, corn chips, etc.

@NESurvivalPrep I think that would depend on what was in them. There are some realy bad things kept in buckets. I have had good luck cleaning them the rest is at your discretion.

We also vaccu-seal our food stuffs then store them in buckets. Generally we use square buckets picked up from the local donut shops . They sell them for under 2 bucks with the lids . While they are white , we store our buckets in a light-limited fashion and being square , they utilize the storage space better than the round type .
