The purplish thing up close was, fortunately for you, not a lightning strike. Lightning leaps from the ground to the clouds, and that flash was a lightning-bolt-to-be. it didn't make the connection, and thus the bolt struck farther away.

The author seems to be correct about reflection, what we are actually witnessing is three three lighting arcs. The purplish arc seems to be an arc generated in the upper atmosphere and captured as an inverted artifact in the opposite extreme of the frame.

Cool! Out of curiosity, was that recorded with a digital video camera? With regards to motion recording, there's a guy that reckons it's only possible to capture lightning with analogue video cameras and cine film cameras.
