Theres more to driving than the fastest car . Milner won due to his skill ! ! Ive been down that exact same road in Petaluma delivering to wineries many , many times.....A great movie...one of the best.....
I really enjoyed watching this movie as a teenager. I was in Ceres recently eating with some one who went to High School with George Lucas, and lives on Paradise road. He said that this scene was actually filmed in Patterson , but did not remember the name of the road it was on to make it look like it actually took place on Paradise Road.
Milner's world was slowly coming apart. His friends were going off to college and he was getting older by the day. Now his faithful Deuce Coupe was about to be beaten. As fate would have it, the challenger to his crown as "fasted in the valley" crashed, leaving him still on top for another day. This was what it was all about for guys like Milner. Another night of fun on the "strip", driving the "fastest car in the valley." Life was still good for Milner but for him, time was running out. Sad...
This was a comming of age story, with every other miain character facing thier own "demons" and Milner knew all along that his undefeated racing record was comming to an end. Falfas 55 chevy was the physical representation of the grim reaper comming for him...."black...with a skull from the rear view mirror"
Milner was lucky and "mature" enough (unlike toad) to realize his undefeated street racing rep was comming to an end.
They wrecked a 4 door with wheels spray painted silver. The actual 2 door with chrome wheels was up for auction in the 90's for $~25k; anybody with a complete Hemmings library from the period has the details. I read there that Pat Swayze's '57 went for about the same $ a few years earlier. I saw on TV some youngster bought the white '58 impala cheap a couple years after AG was filmed and now that's his rapidly appreciating net worth.
There is a blooper in this scene. When they are walking up the hill after the crash, Falfa has his hat in his hand, but in the next scene by the cars on the road, Milner hands falfa his hat!
you little japanese and booboos got your shit give us white folk and workin ppl what we want too see not what u think we should see.. feel free to comment on my mcomment
@joshhohensee Yeah but the Fast and the furious doesn't have much racing, its mostly about cops and smuggling, and drugs. This movie was all about cars, just wish the cars were Imports though.
@ACHEESEDANISH00 well it doesn't have to be Called American Graffiti but just a similar movie with Imports instead of Hot Rods. With the guy having a 95 Supra instead of a 32 Ford and his rivial a 94 RX7 and add EVOs, STis, Integras, an NSX (maybe that could be the car the nerd borrows) and other cars like that.
kilroy what happened was they filmed the flip with a stunt double junker. It was so juky they had to use the exploding can to flip it and they had to film it that way so you couldnt see the can. Afterwards milner and falfa ate hard boiled eggs.
I hadn't noticed this before, but look at the cars how they start out, and the direction they are going.55 on the right with driver to the inside. When the car runs into ditch it flips over onto passengers side, By the way they start out it can't flip onto the passenger side, It would only flip towards driver side.
@skatepunkzero because he isn't running open headers. while it looks like Milner just has headers but they re-routed the exhaust underneath the car out to the bacl. check out this video, muCFwfTKPEY, and you can see it at the 0:30 mark.
@JesusFrankenstein but he was suspose to be for the movie. I figured they re-routed the exhaust under the car, though before in at the Gas Station Milner took the header plugs off to run open header.
@starguy2718 Thats how James Taylor and Wilson got it for so cheap a few years later. They put a 454 in it, with large custom headers. They made it a great car.
@starguy2718 A few years ago in one of the Model car groups on yahoo, somebody did a diorama with Falfa's 55 sitting beside a house 4sale after the race, it was very well done to.
I was 6 when I first saw this in the local drive-in (an almost extinct institution anymore) after it came out. That should roughly tell you how old I am...
@carbonfootprintmyass Supposedly it's supposed to have happened from a blowout of the right rear tire. There's another scene, I can't remember now if it's the burnout next to Toad in Bollander's `58 or the first race with Milner but you see sparks come from that tire. That would of course mean it was worn down to the steel belt...I don't know if they had steel belted tires in `62 but the film was released in `73.
Look closely after the 55 flips on it's top. As Milner is helping Falfa and they walk around the car, you will notice an automatic in the car. Trans pan and looks like a piece of channel welded from frame rail to frame rail as the crossmember.
@ScottysSpeedShop Thus, being Russian, he wil never understand Americana in regard to the male and his car. He can keep his perception, we're quite happy with ours!
@madamerotten I'm going to have to wait for a translation on that. In the meantime I'd like to paraphrase a great philosopher and linguist, Mark Twain, quoting Jim to Huck::"Now Huck, do a cat talk like a cow or a cow like a cat what do it do...It's natural and right for em to speak so..Is a cat a man? so it makes no sense fo a cat to try and speak like a man..Is a Frenchman a man? So why can't a Frenchman speak like man like everyone else" Or in your case A Ruskie.
I think this is the best scene in the whole movie, from the sounds of "Green Onions" playing in the background, the rumble of the engines at :24 to the '55 Chevy's burn out, yikes gives me goose bumps. I read that they had trouble filming this scene because they couldn't get the crash car to roll over. Adobe Rd looks different today than it did then, there is a golf course on one side and houses were build on the other, a couple of stop signs too.
Genius filmmaking. By building up John Milner's rep by word of mouth only, while showing his nemesis Bob Falfa as he demonstrates the overwhelming power of his car on several occasions, as a viewer of this movie, one has absolutely no idea who is actually going to win this race. The viewer asks themselves, "How is this going to end? I'm feeling genuine anxiety."
I drove on that street couples of times, I still even cruise on mchenry rd every summer. I love those true muscle cars. Not those import whatever u guys call them. I was always jealous of my dad. He went cruise there back in his time and races on it. But I went there but couldn't race cuz theres so many of police watching everywhere. We pretty much ruin it with those import and those gang thing w guns n fighting. stupid. Thanks a lot.
"He had me man, he was pulling away from me just before he crashed" MILNER!, why the hell did you say that? It's not true at all, watch the video closely. I`ve never understood why he said that...
Ohhhhhhhhh, that was beautiful John, just beautiful...
@LudaMusser He said it 'cause he sick of being the top dog that every new set of wheels in town wants to try and beat. The junkyard scene where he's telling Carol about the other guy who was fastest in the valley that died racing and then seeing Falfa wreck the '55 has Milner all nerved up. If it was true that Falfa was taking him then John wouldn't have to always be defending the title as fastest guy around. he was looking for a way out. Toad builds up his esteem again and he reclaims his cool.
@4everEddie The tune is "Green Onions" by Booker T & the MGs. from the 1950s It's on Youtube. Great bit of music. Don't play it on your car stereo if there's cops around, you'll speed and get fined...!!
you can get your friends cars and yours all together.. and cruise the speed limit... still making a boatload o noise...and roll into the gas station...the burger joint...the car wash..and a roller rink... all while being safe from the police interference because no one was speeding and no one made a scene frying tires. Police don't write tickets to law abiding citizens last I checked..... not sure though... might be different in Kitchener..... lol
Even though the 10 minute chace in Bullet is a classic, this race will always be the best their ever was and ever ill be..... I'd give almost everything I own for those two cars.....
@MrBurlingtonNorthern ....almost??!!!..... you sure need to get your priorities in gear.. :) lol I also have a black Chevy in the driveway....needs new tires though....;)
@guitargup Yeah almost, my grandfathers Railroad Lantern has to stay, and my dum ass dog come to think of it lol....... so yeah, Almost ;-)
We did that back inthe day with all our cars, pull um the parking lot we hung out at, all in a diagnal ffacing r2 rows, opened the hoods and you wouldn;t believe the people who would walk over and look um over, it was a great times..
@MrBurlingtonNorthern lol ha ha God bless. I bet it was soo neat, yeah there is nothing cooler to me than good cars, good people, and good food! :) Peace be with you Mr. Burlington Northern :)
I saw shit like this unfold outside Tucson. 1983. 21 years after the American Graffiti placement. 12 second cars, paint on the road, very, very east side of town, maybe 10 second cars here and there. Very stupid.
This scene reminds me of my brother and I when we use to stock race. We were snot nosed teenagers whupping on 30 year old mechanics by profession. We were a two man team. My Bro was my pit crew at age 16 and I was the driver at age 20. I Bro had faith and he always motivated me to win. This scene says it all. We will take em all.
Romp on it 98 racing 1969 Camaro with a 327. McAllen, Texas
EVERY SINGLE TIME I WATCH THIS THE HAIR STANDS UP ON THE BACK OF MY NECK... like a shot of pure adrenaline... lining up next to some trash-talkin' dude.. revvin' that V8... droppin' the clutch and unleashing all that horsepower.. PURE BEAUTY.
This is based on something that actually happened to George Lucas as a teenager -I don't know if it was in a drag race but he did get into a wreck that nearly killed him.
i have been watching this since i was a little kid... i am 21 now and it is still my favorite movie.. i grew up tryin to have the fastest car in the area...
there is a very mean 55 chevy lookin for you....
what color is that? a cross between piss yellow and puke green aint it?

@4everEddie The tune is "Green Onions" by Booker T & the MGs. from the 1950s It's on Youtube. Great bit of music. Don't play it on your car stereo if there's cops around, you'll speed and get fined...!!

@650bigal Sorry, it was recorded in 1962. (Wikipedia) should've checked before I posted.

you can get your friends cars and yours all together.. and cruise the speed limit... still making a boatload o noise...and roll into the gas station...the burger joint...the car wash..and a roller rink... all while being safe from the police interference because no one was speeding and no one made a scene frying tires. Police don't write tickets to law abiding citizens last I checked..... not sure though... might be different in Kitchener..... lol

Even though the 10 minute chace in Bullet is a classic, this race will always be the best their ever was and ever ill be..... I'd give almost everything I own for those two cars.....

The story is set in MODESTO ca. I grew up a few hours trip away from here. This is the real deal. Lucas and Howard did a good job.

I saw shit like this unfold outside Tucson. 1983. 21 years after the American Graffiti placement. 12 second cars, paint on the road, very, very east side of town, maybe 10 second cars here and there. Very stupid.

Right when u heard Toad say "Ok, you guys ready" i right away knew that this race was gonna b a classic
