What a night that was. I've seen REM play in colossal venues but to see a band of that stature play an intimate venue like the Olympia was special. It almost never happens that you see genuine musical legends at such close quarters. And the fact that it was a rehearsal made it even better. For much of the gig Stipe was reading the lyrics from a laptop beside him because they were slowly refining the songs as they went along. it was like being allowed to sneak into the studio while they recorded.
I was a huge REM fan going back to "Fables" in '84...up until Monster when I liked some, but not all. Since then I've rarely listened or bought CD's. Until Accelerate...I love it, and Man-Sized Wreath is SO good; as well as Supernatural...and Hollow Man. Welcome back REM. They didn't play Michigan this tour so I'm PISSED, but I've seen them here and in Colorado 7 times.
actually, "Until the Day is Done" is Automatic for the People V, and while it's a good song, i wouldn't want all their work to sound like that. i didn't start listening to R.E.M. until Monster came out, and for a long time i couldnt stomach their early stuff, but now i'm of the opinion that Murmur and Reckoning are their best. i wouldnt want them to go back to them, but songs like "Laughing" and "9-9" are what make me love this band the most.
lets face it we all want automatic again but I don't think that's realistic. some older fans(I'm one) like to claim that Murmur or Lifes Rich is better but not really. Automatic is top top draw. Has there ever been a better end to an album than Man on the Moon, Nightswimming, Find the River?
uh, what makes one better than the other, it's what moves you the most. i usually say murmur cause i heard it when i was in 8th grade, it's stuck w/ me for many many years. i like all their lp's, other than around the sun, though i love a few songs on that one.
I've just listened to accelerate on ilike... while writing emails the only song that made me feel like "mmm this sounds cool, what's the name?" was this one, about the rest... I think we need to keep hoping for a next album to be released.
Hello JLDB. I got the impression that most of those critics come from people refusing to admit that REM is getting out of fantasy. The magical touch of the early years is not there and after a poor disk like "around the sun" is obvious that people overreact with enthusiasm about sth that could be considered at the time of out of time on adventures in HI-FI like a rather mediocre album. Don't take me wrong, I would love as much as you to have an out of time II or a automatic for the people V!
If they leave this off the next record i'm quitting their fan club. This is the only song that got the band members whirling around -surely a sign they like it,no?!
Has a bubblegum quality to it like Wanderlust. This song is excellent and they should put it on the album, give up "On the fly", a dull boring ATS leftover.

you're wrong, Dusty. This is the best album they've released in 15 years, according to fans like me who first saw them liv ein 1985.

Been a long time REM fan and after hearing the album, best one since New Adventures in HiFi!
This song's chorus is so catchy, much better vocals in the finished song.

Hey MaddeningLoops, didn't know you were there. In a couple of short months, the Dublin rehearsals will be nothing but a wonderful and unique memory.
