Romans was written to Christians who were presumably baptized already. Acts has an account of all the conversions in the NT. And in each one, they are all baptized. When the Ethiopian eunuch was baptized, Philip preached the gospel to him (Acts 8). The gospel includes baptism. Doesn't James 2:24 say we are justified by works and NOT by faith alone? But baptism is no more a work than faith is: John 6:29.
John the baptist came as "the voice of one crying in the wilderness" .LUKE3:3-8 NOT as a bucket of "WATER". He was the only preacher of the Gospel Jesus had at that time. The Apostles were not even picked yet and Jesus himslef was not on the scene yet. John was the one Preaching CHRIST.
John preached baptism of repentance for the remission of sins and when you put that with what Paul said in Acts 19:4 we see he was talking about Repent and have Faith and Jesus would forgive your sins, not John
10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. LUKE 19:10
Jesue own words..? If Jesus had to baptize as well as preach death/burial/resurrection {The Gospel} then JESUS according to the CofC and UPCI & others... did'nt save anyone while he was on earth. He NEVER H2o BAPTIZED a single soul.
I don't believe that ! I think this shows that you CAN be saved... without being H2oed.
50 And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace. LUKE 7:48-50
Fundamentally, early Baptists believed that upon believers baptism, each believer received the Holy Spirit, as in Acts 10:47. This meant that the Holy Spirit indwelt believers.According to the bible and early catholic/baptist-(150ADHermas says going into the water dead and arising in the newness of life) teachings baptism does also now save us!It is repentance and belief(faith without works is dead-Ja1:19-26) our souls are purified by obedience.Acts2:38,4:12,19:1-6 all says in Jesus name alone!
If what "early Baptists" believed did not agree with the Bible rightly divided, then the "early Baptists" were wrong. Why do we assume that because they lived in a previous time that they were right?
@300tamales Those in Acts 10 had already been saved, had already received the Holy Ghost BEFORE they were dunked in water. Baptismal regenerists have always had a hard time reconciling Acts 10 w/ their theology.

GOD said all the way back in the very beginning of the old law,"Thou shall not have any other gods before me".
If people think water will save them, isn't that the same as putting a god(water) before GOD?
Think about it.
JESUS DID IT ALL ON THE CROSS !! All we have to do is believe on the name of Jesus Christ to be SAVED !!
