Just to make things clear, "Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town" is a song by Kenny Rogers from back in the 70s. The music playing in the video is a cover by Cake.
Two thoughts, first, this song isn't about a hooker, its about an unfaithful wife who leaves her disabled husband to go fool around in town. It has so much more emotional depth then what is portrayed here.
Second, before we are too hard on Ruby, we should hear her response "Billy I've got to go to town"- 1969 i think. Ruby don't take your love to town was originally sung by Kenny Rogers in the 60's.
What a weird bunch of comments! The song is about a guy who goes off to a foreign war and comes back a quad. Now, it that his wife, Ruby's fault? No. It's HIS fault for going off to war. And now he's a useless bitter fucked-up cripple who resents his wife for having sexual needs that he can't satisfy.
If he could move he should get his gun an blow his stupid brains out.
@martinx1958 Sexual needs are one thing brother, but do you not have any empathy at all? Some people find that it is their obligation to go to war, and people ought to respect that. I don't find it my obligation, and you may not find it yours, either, but that doesn't mean this guys is a "useless bitter fucked-up cripple". You fucking support veterans because they have done more than you and I have, I don't care if you agree with the war or not. Veterans did what they felt was right
I had always thought she was a working girl so she could afford to live, as her husband is crippled. So not exactly a whore! Just a girl making do as best she can.
I like Cake, but they totally miss the depth of this song. It's fuckin' tragic. It's talking about a guy handicapped by the Vietnam War, and he comes home to find his only source of support cheats on him repeatedly. The worst is his sense of helplessness.
@NoLeftThumbs You might be right. I assumed it was Vietnam because the song became a big hit in '69, but it was written and performed by Mel Tillis before that.
What is it with people misinterpreting this song? Ruby isn't a hooker earning money to support her crippled husband. Ruby is out screwing other men, because her husband has been wounded in the war. He is begging her to stop cheating on him, at least until he dies, which the doctors say will be soon. This is a great injustice. Portraying Ruby as a hooker is letting her off easy. If only this poor vet could get his gun, then that unpatriotic hussy would face two barrels of American justice.
@onyourwaydown The lyrics of songs are supposed to have multiple meanings depending on the person listening. Even if that is what the song was supposed to mean when written, does it really matter if someone hears it differently. Let's just enjoy the music. By the way, Adultery is immoral, but not illegal. Cheating on your husband doesn't deserve a shot to the face.
@onyourwaydown I agree, I did not interpret this as her way of earning money, I do however think that this video is just another interpretation. I don't agree with this interpretation but yeah I think this is a good video. They did a good job.
A so so great cover ! When I hear this song, even though it's sad, I feel good. I don't know why. Maybe because of the "harmony". CAKE could have wrote this song !
Nice one. This song has been done over so many times but I think Cake's version really stands out. I'm gonna watch it again! This could be the official music video.
