Wow wicked flash back, don't know how I have forgot about some of this? But all my new playlists will have these tunes in them. I feel guilty somehow . was raised on his guitar & music. Thanks so much. Rick Wichita Kansas
My guitar instructor knew Tommy since they were both very young. He always tells me a story about how he gave him a Les Paul Goldtop back when they were first getting started and Tommy just flipped it and sold it! But my guitar teacher always says how gifted he was. I wish I knew Tommy :(
Why I respect him so much--look at the big shoes he had to fill? How many guitar players could replace Joe Walsh in the James Gang, learning all his licks, and then turn right around and replace Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple and learn all his licks? That's pretty tough!
@notfragile33 I couldnt have said it better myself. Its too bad some people judge his whole life on a year or so of problems. He was great, one of the greatest.
Again making too much of purple. Listen to Tommy he was not the purple player and good on him. He was far beyond it.Listen o Standing in the rain and all his solo songs. The best thee best period.
Tommy was one of thee best guitar player of that era, not recognized like others by the mass music media, but that is the same in every era. Anyone who listens to standing in the rain James Gang or every tune from Teaser or Private Eyes can hear it. He was the whole package very much like JH, he was not just relying on the surrounding players, but the driving force.
I discovered his music in 1974 and he was is in my opinion one of the top total guitar players of that era til this very day.
I grew up in Tommys time, almost same age, it was a different time back then. Tommy was and always will be a great guitar player in my book. He sang, played, had great stage prescence. If he had lived, he would be a household name today, no doubt. How many 24 yr old guys get picked to play lead guitar by the best Rock group in the world?? Purple couldve had anyone, they chose Tommy. How many of you naysayers can claim that?? RIP Tommy.
every guitar player seems to think tommy was crap, compared to blackmore and all the different line up in purple, but tommy in his own right cant BE TOUCHED don't even try. they are always going to knock an american native for his talents, be glad he played guitar and not a scalping knife. white boys.
@911mrchevyman Wait, I thought he was Lebanese--like another great guitarist, Dick Dale, they both incorporated some Middle Eastern influences in their playing
I remember Tommy! I seen him at his homecoming concert at the Sioux City Auditorium. I was in the 8th grade at East Jr. High school in Sioux City and I was a big fan. He was my idol!!! I had both his solo albums and two Deep Purple and two James Gang albums. I went with a friend named Vince Verzani.
Rory Gallagher played one too, worn completely out.
These guys just practiced over and over wrote songs and gave their all for their fans. They just never understood what they meant to us. Or they'd both be here.
It as a tragic day when I heard the news of his death. A brilliant and talented writer, guitar player and singer, the whole package. A loss to all of us way before his time. I think I played Teaser until the grooves on each side wore through to other.
Right man turned on to Tommy back in '90', haven't stopped playing his music to this day. Interesting to delve into all the other projects he worked on. Not to many people have the fortune of knowing his music.
Such an incredible artist in every aspect of his musical talents, and such shame to lose him so early! Will always be at the top of my list of all time favorites!
Tommy Bolin was an lovely but lost soul with an amazing talent of music making and guitar playing and accoring to Mr. Glenn Hughes he was a fantastic and funny person with a big heart, always had a joke and a laugh to deliver... but deep inside his heart was hurted for some reason.
God bless you Tommy and your music will always live on!!! :-)
excusez moi! i m french!! but j'aime ce guitariste! ecoutez the ultimate:redux 3 cd de sa carrière chez friday music!! et le double album de whips and roses avec des inédits chez spv! GENIAL!! ARNAUD
It's still painful for me to listen to Teaser - it's such a brilliant record. He died so young - so talented. Saw him live at the Bottom Line solo, with Deep Purple and finally one of about 100 people who won a contest to see him live doing a broadcast on WBCN in Boston where he was promoting Private Eyes. Longview Studios? Can't remember, but it was unbelievable. R.I.P. Tommy
@falica77 I have the cd of that WBCN show. Was just a lil' bit young to catch DP with Tommy at the Providence civic ctr. (7th grade school night) . This stuff got me through some tough high school yrs. Yea, I feel the sadness. God bless ys Tommy from the heart . ALWAYS remembered, never forgotton .... thx for the thoughts
Interesting enough, Tommy's last gig was opening for Jeff Beck, who was a big Tommy fan. The sadest part is that Tommy's backers wouldn't put out the money to pay his backing band members to stay, so there was much frustration. They were losing about $8-10K a week at the end. Another disaster that had a lot to do with the music industry. Tommy took it in stride, but I think it was a contributing factor in his passing. We're still hearing you Tommy...........Your old friend
What a shame that someone so talented is gone. Such a great talent!!! Drugs take too many geniuses away from us. R.I.P. Tommy--wish I could have really known who you were.
Tommy was not lost. He was not going to grind out music that didn't come from the heart. He was innocent to a fault, and tried to please too many people. A good friend and fellow guitarist, I feel he may have become the greatest talant ever on guitar. His versitility, and taste and vision were unparalleled. RIP, my friend, I will back you up, when I get there...........
You really nailed it down,Tommy(GUN) Bolin, was one of the greatest guitarist's/singer/songwriter ever.Tommy was as you say"innocent to a fault",but he did spread himself to thin.If he wasn't on tour with the James Gang or Purple he would be in a studio somewhere doing some work with bands like Moxy and Billy Cobham,he was amazing on "spectrum".I also believe without a doubt Tommy would have been one the greatest guitarists in the world.Jeff Beck was a major fan of Tommy's work. RIP Tommy..
Thanks for that comment. I love hearing from people that knew him. I never did, but something about his music touches a place rarely touched. It's class, it's beauty, it's love and sadness. Tommy's music feels like it comes from home, but home is far away...
This is one of my favorites by Tommy. For those of us that were lucky enough to have played with him and known him, he was innocent to a fault and had no ego. As far as the Blackmore issue, Tommy replaced some guitarists that went on to have great carrers, including Joe Walsh. He was two years younger than me, but years ahead as a talant. My opinion is that we lost possibly the greatest guitarist in the world ever, in Tommy. RIP, my friend.
One day I went to his place. I walked in and tried to find him, but no one was around. There was no furnishings - nothing. I stayed there for ten minutes before he finally appeared. He showed me his guitar, and the strings must have had a quarter-inch of grime on them, as though he hadn't changed them in four years. I asked him when was the last time he'd changed strings, and he said very seriously, "Gee, I don't know. Do you think I should change them?"
No. He had some of them custom fitted with telecaster necks. He also played a goldtop Les Paul, and an obscure custom job that looked to be based on an explorer.
Tommy Bolins LAST recordings are on the Coven album, Metal Goth Queen out of the Vault. there is a photo slide show video of the song with his amazing guitar work on this page, " Black Swan " is the song!
The words of this song and the artist who gave it are both exceptional. Taken from us way before his time like so many of the greats..Morrison, Hendrix..need I go on?
I was at Tommy's last concert in Miami. Hated to lose a brother like that but he made me sick of the drug scene, so that was a help to me in no small way. I really loved his song Alexa. Wish someone had to post.
The song you're thinking of is Alexis, not Alexa. I think I've seen it on here. I've got it on my PC. If you really want it, I can send it to you, contact me on my page here.
I Loved The Man AND His Music. Thanks for the Great Video. This one got us through some rough times and some great times. I just posted to MySpace And Facebook. Thanks again. My Favorite Tommy song.
I have listened to him since 83....had a bad addiction issue...not a suprise but, if you listen to the lyrics you will see he was lost....long before the addiction
I agree with the comment below drugs are horrible to the ones we love one of them being my daughter haniska 01/04/1988 to 19/10/2008 sadly missed but she is on youtube to good nite sweetie heart,, COCAINE KILLS AS WELL,this song was play at her funeral
Such a great song, and such a wonderful man. It is a shame he died. Drugs are horrible they kill people you deserve to be alive. Most of them anyways! I love you Tommy, Tommy 4ever. :)
Does anybody know where to find the interview that Ann Boleyn did that talks about hinging out with Tommy Bolin in the mid-70s. I have been looking for it everywhere? If you know where to find it, please e-mail.
How come all the good ones have to be gone. Maybe we'll see them in rock n roll heaven. to me his music was so soulful and always touches me anytime I hear it.
This song got me thru alot of hard times back in the late seventies . Tommy B . still lives in GOULDSBORO, PENNSYLVANIA. U. S. A. I LOVE You Man Wherever you are , I hope , Its a Good Place , Because you always put me in one . Joey
Geezus, Tommy. I'm sorry I hadn't heard of you before. I was only 5 in '76, when you died. Glad I know about you now. I only wish classic rock radio would opt out of Bob Segar sometimes and play something from your records instead.
bolin who ive loved ever since i heard the superb bang album most guys in the uk didnt want to know him back then anyway my point is he reminds me of the great ian curtis purley because their lyrics so clearly said they didnt belong in this world they were crying out for help and most of us couldnt even see it and now u got twats like elton maddonna etc freaking if tgheir toe nails grow too quick
Very good. I had seen a most of those photos before but some I hadn`t. You must be as much a Bolin fanatic as me. My brother brought a best of Billy Cobham album back from college and he told me the guitarist was from Sioux City back in 1981. I live only 2 hours from there. I have been one of his biggist fans since and he has had a huge impact on my guitar playing to this time.
Style!

How come all the good ones have to be gone. Maybe we'll see them in rock n roll heaven. to me his music was so soulful and always touches me anytime I hear it.

Tommy Bolin accomplished so much in his short time on earth - what a fabulous musician. The Good Lord has a wonderful band!

great understanding of momentum in the solo. His musicality was so far ahead of rock guitar.

Geezus, Tommy. I'm sorry I hadn't heard of you before. I was only 5 in '76, when you died. Glad I know about you now. I only wish classic rock radio would opt out of Bob Segar sometimes and play something from your records instead.
